Thermodynamics-1

Chapter-4 Assignment
Solve the following problems.

Problem 1
In a piston cylinder device, 10 kg of saturated water vapors at 300 kPa is present. It is heated at constant
pressure until the temperature of steam reaches 200oC. Calculate the boundary work done in this process.

Problem 2
Carbon dioxide (CO2) has a molecular mass of 44. Its specific heat ratio has a value of 1.3. The value for
specific gas constant for CO2 is 0.189 kJ/kg K. Determine the specific heats Cp and Cv. (Answer: 0.819 kJ/kg
K, 0.63 kJ/kg K)

Problem 3
In a piston cylinder device, 0.1 kg of air initially at 150oC at 400 kPa is heated at constant pressure until
the volume occupied is 0.07 m3. Calculate the heat supplied and work done.

Problem 4
A certain perfect gas at initial state of 0.085 m3, 1 bar is compressed to a final state of 0.034 m3, 3.9 bar.
Specific heats at constant volume and pressure are 0.724 kJ/kg K and 1.020 kJ/kg K respectively. The
observed temperature rise is 146K. Calculate specific gas constant R, mass of gas present, increase in
internal energy of gas. (Answer: 0.296 kJ/kg K, 0.11 kg, 11.63 kJ)

Problem 5
A person living in a room of 4 m x 6 m x 4 m room which has 4 wall bracket fans of 120 W each. On a warm
summer day, before leaving the room he turns all fans ON hoping the room will be cooler when he comes
back. Assuming room to be a closed insulated system, determine the temperature and pressure in the
room when the person returns after 7 hours. The room was initially at 100 kPa and 200C when the person
left.
Problem 6
The thermal energy required to heat an ideal gas at constant volume from 150C to 950C is 808 kJ/kg. To
heat the same gas between same temperatures at constant pressure, thermal energy required is 1136
kJ/kg K. Calculate Cp, Cv, R and specific heat ratio for the gas. (Answer: 14.2 kJ/kg K, 10.1 kJ/kg K, 4.1 kJ/kg
K, 1.405)

Problem 7
During winter, the same room mentioned in problem 5 is heated by a steam radiator which has its own
fan for distributing heat. The steam radiator transfers heat at 10,000 kJ/h and an 80W fan is used to
distribute it. The room is not insulated and heat loss through boundary of room is 3000 kJ/h. If the initial
temperature of room is 50C, determine how long will it take for air temperature to rise to 200C if:

a. The 4 bracket fans are turned off

b. The 4 bracket fans are turned on

Problem 8
Two blocks of 60 kg iron and 40 kg aluminum at 85oC and 70oC are dropped in an insulated water tank of
0.6 m3. Initially, water in the tank was at 27oC. Calculate the temperature of water after thermal
equilibrium has been achieved. Then, a third block of 50 kg aluminum at 50C is dropped in the same tank.
Again, calculate the final temperature of water after thermal equilibrium has been achieved.
