Nutrition Rationale

My work sample for nutrition is a weekly menu. It fits in this category because it demonstrates my
knowledge of what type of nutrition is good for children. This menu will be a good reminder when caring
for children and needing to create weekly/monthly menus and working with the food program to ensure
that children get the proper nutrition. I chose it as the best example of my work because it followed
regulations pertaining to healthy nutrition and making sure children are being fed a variety of different
foods during the week. I learned about why children need a variety of foods. I also learned about the
effects of what poor eating habits can have on our health, especially for children that eat junk and don’t
exercise. I learned how important it is to keep the sugar content low and to how important it is for
children to be eating whole grain rich foods. I found great resources, such as MyPlate, to help when
planning meals at my center. My work sample shows my knowledge and understanding of the role
nutrition plays in quality early childhood programming by offering a variety of different foods, low in
sugar content, and at least one whole grain rich food a day. It gives me the knowledge to effectively plan
for children in my care to eat better and offer information to parents about nutrition.

Health Rationale

I completed this course, but the Communicable Disease assignment was not included in this course. I
understand that if I commission with the Registry, I will need to complete this assignment and rationale
before I commission.

Safety Rationale

My work sample for safety is a Playground Assessment Summary. It fits this category because it
addresses safety concerns that a playground has and what can be done to modify the concerns so
children can play safely. I chose it as the best example of my work because it demonstrates my
knowledge on regulations for safety and playground equipment. I learned about regulations regarding
playground equipment and looking at how children may play with it and not be safe. I learned about
safety within childcare environments standards. I learned about emergency preparedness for childcare
settings. I learned about being a mandated reporter and how/when to report if abuse is suspected or
evident. My work shows my knowledge and understanding of the role safety plays in quality early
childhood programming by keeping children safe, inside and outside, and to be the child’s advocate if
abuse is evident.
