Teach-in The most interesting feature is the Teach-in function, with which the sensor is
adjusted to detect or not to detect a certain medium. The sensor can be taught to
suppress a non-conductive foreground medi-
um and to detect an item behind that fore-
ground.
The Teach-in function can be activated by a
push button on the side of the sensor or
remotely by a fourth wire connection.
Dirt and moisture Dirt and moisture is a very common problem in most applica-
tions. We have therefore implemented the possibility of
compensation ”dirt and moisture compensation”, so that foreign materi-
- optional al gradually building up on the sensing face of the sen-
sor will be eliminated, thereby ensuring constantly re-
liable maximum performance. The feature will result in
a very low level of maintenance of the sensor, which
must take place when the LED indication begins to flash
and the alarm output is activated, telling that maximum
auto-adjustment has been reached.

The capacitive The principle is based on an electrode
assembly formed like an "open"
operating capacitor, an oscillator circuit, an

+
evaluation circuit and an output cir- +
- - - -
cuit.
The capacitance is a function of the surface area, the distance between the electrodes and the
dielectric constant of the material of the object present in front of the sensor.
The electrode assembly generates an electrostatic field, and when no object is present in front
of the sensor face, the capacitance is very low, which will generate oscillations with low ampli-
tude.
When an object enters the electrostatic field, the capacitance will increase in accordance
with the above-mentioned parameters. This will cause the amplitude of the generated oscilla-
tions to increase, and the change in amplitude will be evaluated by an evaluation circuit,
which controls the output of the sensor.
Advantages of Without physical contact and independent of form, capacitive sensors detect all conductive or
non-conductive materials, such as water, glass, plastics. Adjustable sensitivity makes it possible
capacitive sensors to "tune out" mounting hardware or intermediate barrier materials.
Nominal sensing The longest sensing distance is achieved with objects made of metals. The rated switching dis-
tance Sn is based on a grounded standard target made of Fe360. If the object is made of a
distance and different material, a correction factor reducing the actual sensing distance is required. The follow-
correction factors ing correction factors derate the sensing distance:
Installation Our capacitive sensors feature sensitivity adjustment, which allows the sensor to be calibrated
for a specific application. This feature will enable the sensor to ignore barriers of non-conduc-
procedure tive materials and only detect objects behind that barrier.
The new generation of TRIPLESHIELDTM sensors, the Teach-in version, incorporates several
features - such as the sensitivity adjustment controlled by the Teach-in function - which facilitate
the installation and safe operation of the sensors.
Furthermore, no worry about whether the output type is a NPN or PNP load, since the type of
output will be automatically detected and selected. Likewise, make or break switching function
is also freely selectable by means of the Teach-in function.
Electrostatic Electrostatic discharge (ESD) often occurs, particularly in the plastics industry and in applications
where material is being transported in plastic tubes. ESD arises due to the friction between plas-
Discharge tic and other parts, which will cause a high electrostatic discharge in the sensor electronics and
thereby damage it. In some cases, an ESD level of 20-30 kV can occur.
Thanks to the TRIPLESHIELDTM technology from Carlo Gavazzi, the sensor is protected
against disturbances caused by high ESD up to 40 kV. The TRIPLESHIELDTM technology further-
more protects the sensor against noise from inverters, mobile phones, wire-conducted noise,
surge and contactor noise.
