I was so happy to see so many people return for another year
and I think it contributed to a multi-year depth of support
and understanding.  People coming back had a context they
could contribute to the new school leaders coming in. Next
year we may see a full 3-year cycle of depth of experience,
just as we see in our Montessori classrooms.  It was so
wonderful to have people from throughout the world join
together to learn together more about guiding our
Montessori schools.

idraniM yhtaK :yaS srekaepS

We did some excellent work together on key areas of
knowledge in sustaining a Montessori school.  And again, the
overwhelmingly authentic and deeply loving nature of this
gathering was so nourishing!  I am certain that this
experience was  shared in common by everyone and
enhanced our conference’s meaning and purpose. I recently
saw a quote by Carl Jung that speaks to our experience
together: “Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside,
awakes!”    We did our share together of both dreaming and
awakening.

With kind regards,

A Montessori School is Alive!
Kathy Minardi

9102 irossetnoM daeL

We began this work on sustainability with some key concepts to inform us:

Our aim is to create a school culture that is regenerative so that it is strong and capable
of continuous learning and transformation in a healthy way in response to change.  We
experience the reality that change is the nature of life itself.

Sustainability is not about building it and then keeping it in a fixed state, as that is not in
tune with the nature of life.
A Montessori school is alive.
The way to sustain life is to build and nurture community – this is the profound lesson
we learn from nature.

An understanding of pattern is crucial to understanding living systems.  A Montessori

school has a “pattern integrity.” We use the knot as a metaphor for that pattern integrity.

We can pass through the knot many continuous threads (people, facilities etc.) over many

idraniM yhtaK :yaS srekaepS

years.  The knot stays true to its integrity even as the threads that pass through the knot
come and go.

Montessori schools have this quality of pattern integrity around the world because the
principles of human development are universal.  A Montessori school is, in this way,
much the same throughout the world.

We come and go, our staff and school families come and go and are impacted to the
better for that opportunity, but the Montessori principles, integral to the knot pattern,
will remain steadfast.

We are not the knot, but we are in service to the principles that it represents as the
metaphor for a Montessori school created to aid life!

Kathy Minardi
Building Our Schools to Last
Kathy Minardi's Keynote Overview

9102 irossetnoM daeL

The Tree image of the living school represents an understanding that our
schools actually have two natures:

A BUSINESS NATURE AND A HUMAN LIVING SYSTEMS NATURE

These are represented as the “roots” of the tree as they must be strong in order
to support and help grow the tree.

We work on how to nourish the roots of the business area of the school and
how to nourish the community nature of the school. We learn how to prepare
each environment of the roots so that they can flourish and support the tree.
This is primarily the work among adults who are in service to the school’s
mission.

idraniM yhtaK :yaS srekaepS

When the tree is strong and healthy it will produce the “fruits” we hope to see:
a child who grows to their full potential, families who thrive in raising their
child and in valuing the Montessori environment, a school that thrives as a
learning community of practice in continuous development in service to the
child and the Montessori environment, a local community that feels the positive
impact of the Montessori community in its midst, and societies that evolve
socially in positive ways.  This was the vision.

Montessori proposed as an evolutionary purpose of our work for the future of

humanity.

Sustaining the Montessori School through Community Building
Kathy Minardi's Workshop Summary

9102 irossetnoM daeL

One of the most important roots of sustainability is community
building.

Community building practices work to achieve social cohesion

among the adult community.  If the adult community is healthy, it
will have a positive impact on the children.

The Montessori environments for children are prepared to

accomplish this social cohesion, and we also need to prepare
them for the adults.

Community is defined as people having a sense of belonging, a

sense of influence and a sense of psychological safety.  A key
principle put into practice in achieving these characteristics of

idraniM yhtaK :yaS srekaepS

community is to make sure that the leader/guide includes in
every adult gathering a time for differentiation of each individual.
Differentiation leads to integration or unity.  This is a congruency
to Montessori practice in the child’s environment.

We learned about various ways to put that into practice during

the workshop. We looked at the prepared environment – both
tangible and intangible – for building community among the
adults.

We also reviewed methods of hosting gatherings and meetings

where we can build community. Some of those are: Circle
Process, Pair/Share, RAP, World Café, Open Space.

Creating a Thriving Staff Culture for Sustainability
Kathy Minardi's Keynote Summary

9102 irossetnoM daeL

Culture is, in part, the DNA of a school in terms of its
shared beliefs, values and attitudes and how those are
put into action.

The important word is “shared.” To thrive and

positively empower everyone, we must hold in
common shared beliefs and values.

A Montessori leader guides a culture rather than

controls it.    An “Everyone Culture” is a mutually
reinforcing model of a workplace for continuous

human development and improvement. It aligns with
Montessori principles to create a “deliberately
developmental school” where it is safe to continue to
improve one’s practices and develop as an adult in
order to fulfill the mission of the school.

We looked at some of the unconscious fears that

prevent trust in building culture and the practices
school leaders need to employ to overcome these
fears.

Key to creating a thriving culture is sharing the vision

often – where we are and where we are going.

Practicing Leadership Authenticity and Presence
Kathy Minardi's Workshop Summary

9102 irossetnoM daeL

The power of our leadership resides in our presence – in the
nature of our being.  It is not about bossing or impressing or
playing a role artificially.

Oddly enough, the more authentic and vulnerable we become in

our way of being with our community, the greater our
effectiveness.  This is about becoming a well-differentiated leader
who can be authentic, take a stand when needed and be true to
one’s beliefs and principles.

When we are worried about what others think, we “eye the scope”
instead of acting from our own truth.  A key to becoming oneself
is also being a life-long learner always working on one’s own
self-development.

We looked at some of the characteristics of a well-differentiated

idraniM yhtaK :yaS srekaepS

adult in relation to the emotional field of the living human system
we are guiding as key to guiding a school.

The differences between reactivity and creativity were considered

as part of this authentic presence we hope to develop as leaders.

The tools that are helpful in becoming mindful and deeply aware
of our feelings and their regulation, our moods and our ability to
communicate within conflict or disagreement were explored.

We looked at the work in this area from the Yale Center for
Emotional Intelligence.  We acknowledged that Maria Montessori
was a truly well-differentiated human being in all the ways we
hope to possess in ourselves.

One of the major efforts we make as Montessori leaders is

toward parent understanding and engagement.  Children
will benefit when the principles of Montessori and the
school’s mission are consistently articulated with “user-
friendly” communication tools.  A master plan for
communication can assist a leader in getting our message
across, whether in a big school or small.

This workshop shared a school communication plan with

·      Implementing strategic initiatives

Teachers As Supervisors
Sue Pritzker's Workshop Summary
This workshop focused on helping teachers to be good
supervisors of others.

9102 irossetnoM daeL

Montessori training does not always provide the
teaching adult with the principles for supporting,
encouraging and collaborating with another adult.
The adult cycle of development continues to need
support.

The leader can assist by creating an organizational

structure, hiring policy, and stated expectations to

rekztirP euS :yaS srekaepS

assist the teacher in developing a relationship with an
assistant and other support staff.

Sample documents for job descriptions, evaluations,

performance improvement plans, and professional
development plans were shared, with the goal of
supporting every member of the school toward
growth and satisfaction in their work.

If you don't, who will? Self-Care
Sue Pritzker's Workshop Summary
While we all know that we need to have balance
in our lives, it is not always easy to find.

9102 irossetnoM daeL

Compassion fatigue is a condition attributed to
people who are drawn to helping or healing work.

Those who are drawn to Montessori work may be,

by their nature, outward directed; responding to
the needs of others before their own. Compassion
defines who they are and what they do.

It is essential to recognize that self-care requires

rekztirP euS :yaS srekaepS

connection, physical comfort, balance, and
personal (educational) growth.

Accepting that it is not bad to “care too much” is

the starting place for self-care. Asking for what
you need, preparing for change, and expanding
capacity by inward growth were described as
components of a sustainable plan for achieving
the personal-professional balance we all seek.

Making music together … with 140+ attendees … sitting around
tables … in a room half the size of a soccer field???

YES, - WE DID! And it was so much fun! We all sang, clapped, tapped,
and snapped. We danced and pranced and dared to be playful and
silly.

Most of all, we practiced our collaborate spirit in a different way:

Adela and Vitezslav supported our sessions expertly on the beautiful
Orff instruments; our alert technicians gently miked us up, so we
not only sounded good, but could also move around without
tripping; the devoted LM team quietly resolved invisible details as if

sprinkling fairy dust; Kathy, Sue, and Peter encouraged us with their
smiles and full-blown participation; Mirka resolutely moved tables
to transform our final song and dance into a deeply moving event;
and Svetlana did e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g to help us be our best.

I think, we all experienced that, in addition to our passions,

strategies, skills, inspiration, and hard work there is a bond that
evolves from very simple, primal instincts and effortlessly forms
community and a sense of universal belonging and togetherness.

Inga Sieminski has arrived to Lead Montessori
2019 to share her knowledge and inspiration
to dance, sing and move with the children. And
not only children, she made all of us remember
what it is like - to sing and play.

Orff pedagogy joins Montessori’s consideration

for each child’s specific needs through a multi-
sensory approach: visual, auditory, tactile,
bodily/kinesthetic, and vestibular.

Children choose from various forms of musical

expression through interactive modeling,
guided exploration, and improvisation. Their
active music-making opens many possibilities
for interaction with each other and elicits social
adjustments in a playful manner.

snoitatneserP hsalF
While the doors for boundless imagination and
experimentation are wide open, the
framework of musical rules sets natural
boundaries and provides stability. More info about Orff Music and Inga:

In its primal approach, elemental music is also
universal. It is a basis from which to explore
musical traditions in one’s own culture.

Anna Gurariy

To prepare us for life we do not need to know everything.

Nor a sample of everything. We need to learn to love to learn,
to know where to find what we want to learn, what we believe
is essential for us to learn.

Within this educational framework it is most important that

one learns not only from books but from other people, as well
as from stones and bees and stars. From everything. In short,
we need to teach how much there is to learn from
experience. To have an open mind. To let go of what one
knows in order to learn something new about the same
subject.

During the recent Lead Montessori conference I had the
pleasure of meeting and reconnecting with many wonderful
educators. Not surprisingly the conversations tended towards
issues of bilingualism and second language instruction.

In the Open Space that followed my lecture on Sunday there

was an interesting, if brief, exchange about materials and

having clear objectives in relation to second language learning
in their schools would go a long way to alleviating some of the
