CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION

This manual is intended to inform and educate the operator of the WINGS
software application and its purpose, limitations and capabilities. The data
included in this instructional field manual is exclusive to operating WINGS.

WHAT IS THE W.I.N.G.S. APPLICATION?

W.I.N.G.S. stands for Windowed Instrument Navigation Guidance System; and is a type
of software that provides an aircraft pilot real-time data on aircraft instrumentation via the
on-board avionics of their vehicle. This data is provided in a windowed format, on a second

screen via A³, otherwise called ‘Advanced Avionics Access’, a type of data sent via Redis.

APPLICATION OVERVIEW & DIAGRAM

Displayed below is an overview of the communication network between ArmA 3 ® game

data and the Windowed Instrument Navigation Guidance System (WINGS) via Redis. A
full overview of the ‘ArmARedisClient’ Network Protocol is explained further, elsewhere.

(Fig 1.1 “WINGS ↔ A³, Advanced Avionics Access Interfacing Method”)

By utilising ArmARedisClient, the database read/write access speed is nigh real-time. It

outperforms standard databases by 98.00% meaning data storage is incredibly efficient.
FM 20-18 WINGS OPERATORS MANUAL © 2018 VOLUMEINFINITE. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

ARMA REDIS CLIENT FRAMEWORK

ArmARedisClient is an ArmA 3 ® extension that’s written by Creedcoder. This pioneer

framework enables users to store data from memory as opposed to the read/write method
used by MySQL and SQLite. This extension is the core transmission methodology used
to support WINGS. As such, it is a highly recommended method for storing data to a
database table providing superior access speed and accuracy of values that servers need.

PLEASE NOTE, WINGS REQUIRES THIS METHODOLOGY TO OPERATE

Enquiries regarding the Redis Framework or ArmARedisClient should be directed toward

the framework authors, especially Creedcoder if regarding queries about ArmA 3 ® data.
The WINGS application requires the ArmARedisClient program launched/active to work.

STARTUP PROCEDURES

To begin utilising the WINGS application, the steps displayed below must be followed to
initialise and use the software. When troubleshooting any issues involving this program
said user is therefore urged to follow the steps described below first to fix any problems.

01 ☑ Locate “@ArmaRedisClient\Redis Server\64bit\” and launch the ‘Start Redis

Server.bat’ which launches the Redis Server. It is REQUIRED, don’t skip it.

02 ☑ Locate “@WINGS\App” and launch the ‘WINGS.exe’ (run program as Administrator)

and then launch ArmA 3 ® with ArmARedisClient and WINGS activated in launcher.

03 ☑ Begin playing your WINGS supported mission, or join a WINGS Mission via a server

and ALT+TAB to the WINGS.exe, click ‘Connect’ and return to ArmA 3 ® and enjoy!

INCORPORATION INTO MISSION DATA

Provided with your WINGS Suite, is an example mission, located in “@WINGS\Mission

Template”, and is designed to test the functionality of the software. Furthermore, it has
the added benefit of giving mission creators the opportunity to make their own WINGS
mission. Shown below is an illustration of the steps needed to merge/create missions:

STEP 01: Open @WINGS\Mission Template\WINGS_Altis_Template01.Altis

This mission contains 6 airports, subsequently named RNWY01, RNWY02, etc. They’re
the runway data used in the mission that tells WINGS what airport you plan to fly toward.
FM 20-18 WINGS OPERATORS MANUAL © 2018 VOLUMEINFINITE. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

STEP 02: Double Click on any Runway Game Logic in the Editor

The above example has a specific format, and must be followed properly. Failure to use
this format may cause undesired effects, or ultimately crash the game, server, or applet.
There are a few method for incorporating this type of data into your own ArmA missions:

 Select all Runway “Game Logics” in the Editor, Copy and Paste them elsewhere.

 Merge your mission using the Editor, this may cause some compatibility issues.

 Create your own Game Logic based on specific rules described in detail below…

STEP 03: Test Your Mission Properly

The above example demonstrates a properly configured mission. By launching your own
mission and opening the map, the user will see a list of airports they have created. It’s so
important that you properly test your map by flying from airport to airport, and taking time
to ensure your radio panel reads the proper frequencies required to travel to an airport..!
