I attended the Drug Survival 102: IPE on the Opioid Epidemic. Similar in structure to the IPEs
we have been required to attend in the past, students from different healthcare majors gather
together to discuss and collaborate about issues in healthcare. This event also had several
speakers from TPD, campus EMS, and other community groups to talk on the subject.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
This activity was held in the HSIB building on the UA campus. The in person activity lasted a
little over 2.5 hours, and the pre-activity and post-activity surveys and reading took about 45
minutes.
This experience I found to be really informative and brought to light the prevalent issues and
facts surrounding the opioid epidemic. It was really educational and stressed the efforts in place
to stop stigmatizing drug users and addicts as bad people. I think that was a really important
perspective to focus on and the speakers and educators kept stressing the goal of ending opioid-
related deaths.
How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?
This experience will definitely stick with me throughout my career as a nurse, because drug use
is everywhere in our world and it’s important to be able to recognize real and potential drug
issues in patients I’m going to have. I will need to be able to identify ways I can help them and
provide them with the resources best suited to meet their needs, and this activity will help me
with that.
Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
I would highly recommend this experience to students in the future, it was extremely informative
and it surrounds a very pressing issue that is the opioid epidemic. It is widely prevalent in our
society and in healthcare, and this epidemic is very relevant to the nursing profession.

This experience was honestly really enjoyable to participate in. It was fun to see the 2 nd semester
students and reminisce on when I was in their shoes participating in this same exact simulation
only a year ago. I was glad I was able to participate and use my knowledge to be able to play the
role well and ask the students questions that would allow them to provide me education in the
How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?
This experience helped to emphasize to me the principle of “nurses inspire nurses”, which is
somewhat of a movement to replace the stereotype of “nurses eat their young”. Even though I’m
not even graduated yet and not a real nurse, seeing these younger students makes me inspired to
help teach them and share my knowledge with them. It was awesome to see them collaborate
with each other and when they would perform the right nursing interventions and give my
character thorough education, it made me super happy and proud to see them succeeding! I want
to keep this feeling with me as I advance in my career becoming an experienced nurse and
always try to be a teacher and example to those new nurses or students I may encounter.
Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why or
why not?
I would recommend this experience in the future because it was really fun and beneficial! The 2nd
semester faculty really appreciated our help and expertise. Having a volunteer to play the
patient’s mother allowed all the students to be able to act out a nursing role instead of one of
them having to play the mother as well, so that provided a better learning experience for them
also!
