Problem Set A for Prelim Project (Bernoulli Equation – Orifice)

1. Benzene flows through a 100-mm diameter pipe at a mean velocity of 3.00m/s. Find the volume flow rate in cu.m./sec and L/min,
weight flow rate and mass flowrate.
2. Water enters the mixing device shown (Fig.1) at 150L/sec through pipe A, while oil with specific gravity of 0.8 is forced in at 30L/sec
through pipe B. If the liquids are incompressible and form a homogeneous mixture of oil globules in water, find the average velocity
and density of the mixture leaving through the 30-cm diameter pipe C.
3. Water flows into a cylindrical tank (Figure 2) through pipe 1 at the rate of 25ft/sec and leaves through pipes 2 and 3 at 10ft/sec and 12
ft/sec, respectively. At 4 is an open air vent. Inside pipe diameters are D1=3in, D2=2in, D3=2.5in, D4=2in. Calculate the dh/dt, velocity
of air inflow through vent 4, assuming that the flow is incompressible.
4. The piston of a hypodermic apparatus (Figure 3) is being withdrawn at 0.30in/s; air leaks in around the piston at the rate of
0.0012in3/s. What is the average speed of blood flow in the needle?
5. Kerosene, (specific gravity = 0.88) enters the cylindrical arrangement (Figure 4) at section 1, at 0.08N/sec. The 80mm-diameter plates
are 2mm apart. Assuming steady flow, compute the inlet average velocity v1, outlet average velocity v2 assuming radial flow, and outlet
volume flux.
6. A 150-mm diameter jet of water is discharging from a nozzle into the air at a velocity of 36m/s. Find the power in the jet with respect to
a datum at the jet.
7. If a water jet with velocity of 58ft/sec is directed upward 45° with the horizontal, to what height will it rise neglecting air resistance?
8. With losses of 0.20v12/2g between sections 1 and 2 of the Venturi meter (Figure 5), calculate the flow in gallons per minute.
9. Water flows from a large tank through an orifice and discharges to the atmosphere (Figure 6). The coefficients of velocity and
contraction are 0.96 and 0.62, respectively. Find the diameter and actual velocity in the jet and the discharge from the orifice.
10. The tank shown (Figure 7) has the form o f a frustum of a cone with dimensions shown in the figure. The bottom of the tank contains
an orifice that has a coefficient of discharge equal of 0.62. The tank contains water to its depth of 3.5m. Find the diameter of the orifice
needed to empty the tank in 8 mins.
11. A rectangular tank is divided by a partition into two chambers as shown (Figure 8). A 6-in. diameter orifice, for which C is 0.65, is
locate near the bottom of the partition. At a certain time, the water level in chamber A is 10ft higher than that in chamber B. Find the
time it will take for the water surface in the two chambers to be at same level.
12. Oil with specific gravity of 0.86 discharges from a 250-mm diameter pipe through a 100-mm diameter sharp-edged orifice as shown
(Figure 9). Coefficients of velocity and contraction are 0.98 and 0.63, respectively. Determine the discharge of oil in the pipe, diameter
of jet and velocity of oil in the jet.
13. Oil flows in the pipe shown (Figure 10). The orifice in the pipe has a coefficient of discharge of 0.64. Compute the discharge of the oil
in the pipe.
14. A jet discharges from an orifice in a vertical plane under a head of 16ft. The diameter of the orifice is 2.0in, and the measured
discharge is 0.42cfs. The coordinates of the jet are 15.39ft. horizontally from the vena contracta and 4.0ft below the center of the
orifice. Find the coefficients of discharge, velocity and contraction.
15. A hemispherical shell, with base horizontal and uppermost is filled with water. If the radius is 8ft., determine the time required to empty
through a sharp-edged orifice 6in. in diameter (c=0.60) located at the lowest point.
