Executive summary

'Eat healthy and live healthy' is one of the essential requirements for long life. Unfortunately,
today's world has been adapted to a system of consumption of foods which has several adverse
effects on health. Lifestyle changes has compelled us so much that one has so little time to really
think what we are eating is right! Globalization and urbanization have greatly affected one's
eating habits and forced many people to consume fancy and high calorie fast foods, popularly
known as 'Junk foods'. Research into the possible health hazards on consumption of such high
calorie foods has given an insight to avoid them, but unfortunately measures taken are not as
effective as they need to be. Diseases like coronary artery disease and diabetes mellitus have
seen a profound rise in developing countries and such unhealthy junk food consumption is one of
the notable factors to its contribution. This global problem of consuming junk food on a large
scale and its impact on health needs emphasis and health education which can greatly contribute
to its limited consumption and switching over to healthy eating habits for the better living.
knowledge highlighting about the eating habits, nutritional aspects, quality of unhealthy foods,
their health impact and preventive measures should be given to create awareness and render
health education for a change towards good eating practices. Junk food and its impact on health
have been reviewed from various resources and have been systematically presented, so as to
emphasize its ill effects and measures to be adapted towards healthy living.

Chap. 1 INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT

2
INTRODUCTION

Fast food is a type of mass-produced food designed for commercial resale and with a strong
priority placed on "speed of service" versus other relevant factors involved in culinary science.
Fast food was originally created as a commercial strategy to accommodate the larger numbers of
busy commuters, travelers and wage workers who often did not have the time to sit down at
a public house or diner and wait for their meal. By making speed of service the priority, this
ensured that customers with strictly limited time (a commuter stopping to procure dinner to bring
home to their family, for example, or an hourly laborer on a short lunch break) were not
inconvenienced by waiting for their food to be cooked on-the-spot (as is expected from a
traditional "sit down" restaurant). For those with no time to spare, fast food became a
multibillion-dollar industry. In 2018, the fast food industry was worth an estimated $570 billion
globally.
The fastest form of "fast food" consists of pre-cooked meals kept in readiness for a customer's
arrival (Boston Market rotisserie chicken, Little Caesars pizza, etc.), with waiting time reduced
to mere seconds. Other fast food outlets, primarily the hamburger outlets (McDonald's, Burger
King, etc.) use mass-produced pre-prepared ingredients (bagged buns & condiments, frozen beef
patties, prewashed/sliced vegetables, etc.) but take great pains to point out to the customer that
the "meat and potatoes" (hamburgers and French fries) are always cooked fresh and assembled
"to order".
Although a vast variety of food can be "cooked fast", "fast food" is a commercial term limited to
food sold in a restaurant or store with frozen, preheated or precooked ingredients, and served to
the customer in a packaged form for take-out/take-away.
Fast food restaurants are traditionally distinguished by their ability to serve food via a drive-
through. Outlets may be stands or kiosks, which may provide no shelter or seating, or fast food
restaurants (also known as quick service restaurants). Franchise operations that are part
of restaurant chains have standardized foodstuffs shipped to each restaurant from central
locations.
Fast food began with the first fish and chip shops in Britain in the 1860s. Drive-through
restaurants were first popularized in the 1950s in the United States. The term "fast food" was
recognized in a dictionary by Merriam–Webster in 1951.
Eating fast food has been linked to, among other things, colorectal cancer, obesity, high
cholesterol, and depression. Many fast foods tend to be high in saturated fat, sugar, salt and
calories.
The traditional family dinner is increasingly being replaced by the consumption of takeaway fast
food. As a result, the time invested on food preparation is getting lower, with an average couple
in the United States spending 47 minutes and 19 seconds per day on food preparation in 2013.

3
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

 To study the fast food consumption among the teenagers.

 To know whether the consumption of fast food among the teenagers has been increased
or not.
 To examine the health of the teenagers
 To determine the factors influence the consumption of fast foods among teenagers.

4
SCOPE OF THE STUDY

Fast food covers the whole of the world because these foods are found in every part of the world
and is mostly likes by the people of all age group. Fast food is easy and convenient to be cooked
within short time. Eaten in large quantities on a regular basis can cause many aliments like
obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure etc. The fast food is served in many outlets, the few outlets
in our locality are :-

 McDonalds
 KFC
 Dominos
 Pizza hut
 Café coffee day (CCD)

CHAP 2. INDIAN FAST FOOD

6
INDIAN FAST FOOD
The fast food industry in India has evolved with the changing lifestyles of the young Indian
population. The sheer variety of gastronomic preferences across the regions, hereditary or
acquired, has brought about different modules across the country. It may take some time for the
local enterprise to mature to the level of international players in the field.
Many of the traditional dishes have been adapted to suit the emerging fast food outlets. The basic
adaptation is to decrease the processing and serving time. For example, the typical meal which
called for being served by an ever alert attendant is now offered as a Mini-Meal across the
counter. In its traditional version, a plate or a banana leaf was first laid down on the floor or
table. Several helpers then waited on the diner, doling out different dishes and refilling as they
got over in the plate.
In the fast food version, a plate already arranged with a variety of cooked vegetables and curries
along with a fixed quantity of rice and Indian flatbreads is handed out across the counter against
a prepaid coupon. The curries and breads vary depending on the region and local preferences.
The higher priced ones may add a sweet to the combination. Refills are generally not offered.

STYLES
The diversity of Indian cuisine poses logistical problems when it comes to handling. Hence it is
common to serve different cuisines at different counters within the same premises. Presence of a
large vegetarian population, who eschew non-vegetarian food, has given rise to outlets which
exclusively serve vegetarian fast food. Also, different variety of food may be served depending
on the times of the day. Beverages such coffee, tea, soft drinks and fruit juices may also be
served in such outlets. Some outlets may additionally have specially designed counters for ice-
cream, chaats etc.
Popular formats of fast food business in India have the following features in common:

 Wide opening on the road side

 Easy to maintain and durable décor
 A cash counter where food coupons are sold
 A food delivery counter which invariably is granite topped
 Additional counters for Ice Creams, Chaats, Beverages etc.
 A well fitted kitchen located so as to be visible to the customers
 Tall tables, typically of stainless steel, where one can eat while standing
 A drinking water fountain adorned with a water filter
 Rust-proof and non-breakable crockery

7
Top 10 Most Common Ingredients in Fast Food

1. Citric Acid: The Most Common Preservative

Salt has been used for centuries to preserve meats and fish. It works to inhibit the growth of

bacteria cells, which lose water and become dehydrated in salty environments. Over the years,

food scientists and manufacturers have discovered that other chemicals also can serve as

preservatives. Citric acid, an organic acid found in many fruits, especially limes, lemons, and

grapefruits, is one of those chemicals.

2. High-fructose Corn Syrup: The Most Common Sweetener

Fast-food restaurants have many different ways to sweeten beverages, baked goods and
condiments. Sucrose, or sugar, reigned as the traditional sweetener for years until food scientists
began to synthesize sugar substitutes. Saccharin arrived first, followed by aspartame and
sucralose. A more significant revolution came in 1957 when two scientists worked out a process
to manufacture high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

3. Caramel Color: The Most Common Color Additive

When it comes to the psychology of eating, food has to look good if it's going to taste good.
That's why fast foods contain color additives -- to prevent the loss of a food's inherent color, to
enhance color or to add color when it doesn't exist naturally. Hardly a single fast-food menu item
doesn't have at least one artificial color buried somewhere in its ingredient list. Common
additives include Yellow No. 5, Yellow No. 6 and Red No. 40.

4. Salt: The Most Common Flavor or Spice

In terms of frequency, salt -- or sodium chloride -- appeared more times on the fast-food menus
we surveyed than any other ingredient. It's not always first, but it's always there, even in
sweet foods (shakes and sundaes, for example) that don't seem salty at all. Fast-food chains use
salt primarily to make their meals more palatable. It's paired with pepper to season hamburgers,
and it's a major ingredient in bread, ham, bacon, sausages and cheese.

8
5. Monosodium Glutamate: The Most Common Flavor Enhancer
Monosodium glutamate, or MSG, earned its reputation in Asian takeout kitchens across
America, but almost all fast-food restaurants use the flavor enhancer to some extent.
Interestingly, MSG has no distinct taste itself. Instead, it amplifies other flavors, especially in
foods with chicken or beef flavoring, through processes that scientists don't fully understand.
MSG is the sodium salt of the amino acid glutamic acid and is just one form of glutamate, a
chemical that exists naturally in many living things.

6. Soybean Oil: The Most Common Oil or Fat

Drive around America long enough, and you're bound to see a soybean farm. According to the
U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly 75 million acres (30 million hectares) of farmland were
used in 2008 to grow soybeans, resulting in 2.9 billion bushels of crop. What happens to all of
those soybeans? Many are crushed and mixed with solvents to extract soybean oil -- a fast-food
staple used for deep-frying and as a key ingredient in margarine, pastries, cookies, crackers,
soups and nondairy creamers.

7. Mono- and Diglycerides: The Most Common Emulsifiers

Cooks and food preparers have been working with emulsions -- two or more liquids that can't
normally be mixed together -- for a long time. Fortunately for our taste buds, they've discovered
several substances that encourage liquids to overcome their unwillingness to combine. These
substances are known as emulsifiers.

8. Xanthan Gum: The Most Common Stabilizer or Thickener

In the 1950s, a chemist working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture began conducting
research on an interesting new molecule. The chemist was Allene Rosaline Jeanes, and the
molecule was dextran, a giant molecule made of thousands of sugar building blocks. Jeanes had
great difficulty finding large quantities of dextran until a soft drink company came to her with a
bottle filled, not with refreshing root beer, but with something slimy and viscous. Jeanes
discovered that the bottle had become contaminated with a bacterium that produced dextran as a
byproduct of fermentation.

9
9. Chicken: The Most Common Meat Product
We're just as surprised as you to list chicken, not beef, as the most popular fast-food meat, and to
be honest, this one is tricky. In our analysis of several menus, chicken appeared as the first
ingredient more than beef, pork or turkey. But that's a little misleading because many fast-food
chains have more chicken-based menu items than beef. For example, McDonald's features
chicken sandwiches, chicken nuggets, premium chicken strips, chicken snack wraps and a full
line of premium salads topped with, you guessed it, chicken.

10. Niacin: The Most Common Nutrient

It seems strange that fast-food chains would add nutrients to our extra-value meals. Doesn't food
already come with a natural supply of nutrients? Broccoli, for example, contains significant
levels of many essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamins C, K and A. Of course,
broccoli isn't generally found on a fast-food menu. In the place of fresh fruits and vegetables are
scores of highly processed foods.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF FAST FOOD

10
Advantages of Fast Food

1. Fast food provides affordable access to needed calories.

You will not find a better deal on the total number of calories that fast food offers at the cost
charged to customers. It is necessary to make smart purchasing choices to gain this advantage,
but it is possible. You can fill up on cheeseburgers at McDonald’s to get 300 calories for each $1
spent. If you go to a McChicken, then it is 350 calories per dollar. Although there are high levels
of fat and salt to consider in this diet, you cannot find a similar result with other foods.
Even at McDonald’s, you’ll only receive 73 calories per dollar if you purchase a grilled chicken
sandwich. If you were to shop for fresh foods at the local supermarket, you might achieve 40
calories per dollar on a good day.

2. You can save time with your eating needs with fast food.
Most meals are delivered within minutes when you choose a quick-service restaurant for your
food. The average location will only have you waiting in line for a few minutes at most as well.
That means you can grab your meal, eat, and get on with your day without an excessive time
commitment. Even when you compare fast food to casual dining, the time it takes to order and
eat is about 50% faster. Most families are finished in under 30 minutes.

3. Drive-thru options are available with fast food restaurants.

If you don’t feel like cooking at home one evening, then you can stop by your favorite fast food
restaurant to pick up a quick meal. The Drive-thru line available at most locations allows you to
place an order from the convenience of your vehicle. Then pull up to the window to pay. You’ll
be handed a bag with your selections that you can then enjoy in the comfort of home. Just
remember to check that the customer service representatives got your order right before pulling
away to ensure you’re not left with an unpleasant surprise when you get home.
4. There are healthy choices available on most fast food menus.
You can pull up to the average fast food location to purchase healthy items if you’re trying to be
conscious about the foods you eat. Numerous locations offer products that are 400 calories or
less without being too expensive. You can even stop at a place like Shake Shack to get a burger
with the works at that calorie level. There are salads, baked potatoes, apple slices, oatmeal, and a
growing selection of alternative or limited-time foods from which to choose as well. Fast food
has the reputation for being the place to grab a greasy burger, but it only offers that as one
possibility.

5. It offers a complete meal at an affordable price.

You can purchase a taco, a side dish, and a drink at Taco Bell for under $4 (including tax) if you
order from their menu strategically. Combination meals are usually priced at $7 or less. You can
even order premium food items at some locations in the $9 range that would be double that price
at other restaurants. If you have a large family and are traveling, this dining option is light on the
budget while helping to ensure you don’t drive away hungry.

6. You receive consistent services with the industry’s top brands.

One of the best reasons to consider fast food as a dining option is the consistency of the
experience. You can walk into a Wendy’s anywhere in the world and expect a certain level of

11
service, quality, and pricing. The food products often ship from similar vendors, even when the
locations are independently owned, which means you’re eating the same items when you order.
Even policies on bathroom cleanliness are similar at each location, allowing you to walk in with
a specific set of expectations for the money you’re about to spend.

7. You have access to all the nutritional information.

Fast food establishments are just like any other restaurant when it comes to following the
requirements of posting ingredients and nutritional information. You have the right to know what
is in your food before you order it. Many locations are required to post calorie counts for each
menu item too. The top brands in the industry post their entire menu online for you to review
with this information if you wish. Although there are some exceptions that apply to small chains
or individual restaurants, this data makes it easier for the average person to make a healthier
heating choice.

8. Fast food locations provide local jobs and skill training.

Many teens get their first job at a fast food restaurant because there are skills to learn and money
to earn. Although the pay rate isn’t high in most locations, the wages are enough to make the
work seem meaningful. There are advancement opportunities for everyone in the industry as
well, including general manager positions which earn competitive wages against the national
median. When the flexible hours and tuition reimbursement benefits are included as well, it is
easy to see why older adults are also looking to this industry as a way to earn some supplemental
income.

9. It gives you an opportunity to experience foods from different cultures.

Fast food items are more than just convenient. They also offer you an opportunity to try different
items from various cultures that may not be available to you otherwise. There are numerous
chains and independent QSR locations that offer Italian, Middle Eastern, Mexican, and Chinese
dishes that are served with the same speed as a burger and fries.

Disadvantages of Fast Food

12
1. The nutritional content of fast food is highly questionable.
Although you can purchase a lot of food for relatively little cash when you dine at a fast food
restaurant, the quality of what you receive is often questionable. The foods are safe to eat, but
they may not be healthy to consume. Most fast food menu items are high in sodium content and
fat, leaving little room for other nutritional elements.

2. Prices can be deceiving when you order fast food items.

Value meals trick you into thinking that they’re cheaper for you. When you compare the cost of a
meal for a single person compared to what you could purchase at the local store to make at
home, the difference is night and day. Even if you spend just $7 on your burger and fries, there’s
a good chance you could purchase a baked potato and a small steak. Which option is healthier?
If you shop at a store like Safeway, you can even purchase entire chickens for the same price that
you’d spend on a combo meal.

3. The food quality at a fast food location is usually lower.

Fast food products go through bulk production, shipping, and freezing processes to ensure that
what you eat is safe. Although some brands like Wendy’s or Culver’s don’t freeze their foods
before preparation, most do for convenience. That process reduces the quality of each bite that
you take. Long-term storage (which includes the need for preservatives) can also enter the eating
equation for some restaurants. Low prices will always limit your access to fresh produce and
high-quality proteins.

4. You must remain disciplined to order healthy items at a fast food location.
It is easy enough to fool yourself into thinking that you are choosing something healthy at a fast
food restaurant when you order a salad or a grilled item. If you go to Wendy’s to order a Spicy
Chicken Caesar Salad, then you’re going to consume 790 calories and 51g of fat when you eat
that meal with the dressing. You could eat two Egg McMuffins from McDonald’s and still come
in with fewer calories.

5. The ingredients in fast food items are not always easy to find.
If you perform a basic Google search for “Big Mac ingredients,” then the first listing you receive
comes from Wikipedia. Look below and you’ll see a link for the main McDonald’s site. Click on
it and your browser might ask for your current location. You’ll also get a pop-up to download the
company’s app. Then click on the tab to view “all ingredients and allergens.”

6. Fast food items create an addictive-like effect on the human body.

The salience of fast food creates an addictive-like impact on some individuals because it offers
highly palatable items, high levels of sugar, caffeine access, and marketing presentations that
encourage substance dependence. Most fast food meals are accompanied by a soda, increasing
the sugar content by 10 times. This issue is thought to be one of the primary reasons why obesity
is on the rise in the developed world, but it is especially strong in the United States. People are
settling for eating food-like products instead of real food items.

7. The industry shifts the priority of what a meal is supposed to be.

Fast food locations are concerned about customer turnover more than anything else. They want
to rush you in, serve your food, and then give you the minimum amount of time to consume it

13
before escorting you out the door. Many locations require you to leave in 30 minutes or less, or
risk being trespassed by the local police. The goal with such a policy is to limit loitering, but let’s
be real here for a minute: a family with three young children will be lucky sometimes to get
started eating in 30 minutes, much less finish within that time.

8. It could be dangerous to your health.

Healthline notes that there are 13 effects that happen to the human body when fast food products
are consumed on a regular basis. Headaches, dental problems, high cholesterol levels, shortness
of breath, acne, depression, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke are all possible
outcomes with this eating habit. Although some of these issues can be tempered with
moderation, it only takes one meal to exceed your sugar and salt intake for the entire day.

9. Fast food can create adverse effects on society.

Over one-third of children between the ages of 6-19 in the U.S. are considered either overweight
or obese according to their BMI. Almost 70% of adults in the United States meet that same
diagnosis. The growth of fast food availability in the country has been on the same curve as
obesity since 1970. Even when awareness campaigns are waged to make consumers smarter, the
eating choices that people make continue with very few changes. Obesity can lead to issues with
muscle mass and bone density as well.

REASONS WHY WE EAT FAST FOOD

14
1. FOOD AVAILABILITY
When food is out there, we are going to eat it. Forget resolve — the mere presence of
food suggests that we have a tendency to be extremely probably to eat it. This means if
you purchase the food, even though it's just for guests or for special occasions, or have a
biscuit tin or lolly jar or fundraising chocolate box at work, you're considerably a lot of
probably to eat whether or not you're hungry or not. If you actually don‘t wish to eat it,
don't expire. Keep food out of sight in any atmosphere you pay tons of your time in.

2. SEEING OTHERS EAT

It seems that seeing others eat, whether or not you're hungry or not, like a shot provides
North American country permission to eat too. This behavior is usually discovered at
food courts and airports once a major range of individuals are feeding at any purpose in
time, whether or not it's a time for supper or not. This finding confirms that of the
Framingham Heart Study, that during a 30 year analysis found that we have a tendency to
essentially become just like the individuals we have a tendency to pay our time with.

3. NEGATIVE EMOTIONS
Although not as powerful as having food out there, or seeing others eat, so feeling
unhappy, depressed or simply down is enough to drive feeding behavior, notably once it
involves snacking. For those folks WHO eat to self soothe, detain mind that usually this
can be} often learnt behavior, schooled to us as youngsters or cooperation channels after
we are inspired us to eat bound foods to feel better; or to shop for a packet of Tim Tams
after we are observation TV alone reception. As such, the sole thanks to management
emotional gula is to spot after we are feeling unhappy or down and learn to self soothe in
different ways in which, or if you want to eat, select portion controlled treats.

4. KEEPING BUSY
Not amazingly one key issue found to assist management food intake was the easy act of
keeping busy. Engaging in activities however feeding was a key issue that resulted in
each fewer meals and snacks being consumed. This can be conjointly probably to
somewhat justify why we have a tendency to eat a lot of in the dark after we are sitting
reception, maybe not excessively engaged. It conjointly suggests that keeping busy, while
not tempting food information may be a key consider managing our food intake on a
commonplace.

5. BEING WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY

15
In distinction to the observation that saw study participants eat a lot of once others were
feeding, during this study being around friends and family truly considerably slashed the
consumption of snacks. This finding suggests once more that merely being engaged with
others seems enough to limit our intake of additional foods and management our feeding
after we are enjoying meals. For this reason seeking out the corporate of others {when we
have a tendency to once we after we} are due for a snack or a meal seems to be another
simple way to facilitate management the quantity of food we consume.(Gundry)

8 Ways to Stop Cravings for Unhealthy Foods

1. Drink Water

Thirst is often confused with hunger or food cravings. If you feel a sudden urge for a specific
food, try drinking a large glass of water and wait a few minutes. You may find that the craving
16
fades away, because your body was actually just thirsty. Furthermore, drinking plenty of water
may have many health benefits. In middle-aged and older people, drinking water before meals
can reduce appetite and help with weight loss.

2. Eat More Protein

Eating more protein may reduce your appetite and keep you from overeating. It also reduces
cravings, and helps you feel full and satisfied for longer. One study of overweight teenage girls
showed that eating a high-protein breakfast reduced cravings significantly. Another study in
overweight men showed that increasing protein intake to 25% of calories reduced cravings by
60%. Additionally, the desire to snack at night was reduced by 50%

3. Plan Your Meals

If possible, try to plan your meals for the day or upcoming week. By already knowing what
you're going to eat, you eliminate the factor of spontaneity and uncertainty. If you don't have to
think about what to eat at the following meal, you will be less tempted and less likely to
experience cravings.

4. Avoid Getting Extremely Hungry

Hunger is one of the biggest reasons why we experience cravings. To avoid getting extremely
hungry, it may be a good idea to eat regularly and have healthy snacks close at hand. By being
prepared, and avoiding long periods of hunger, you may be able to prevent the craving from
showing up at all.

17
5. Fight Stress

Stress may induce food cravings and influence eating behaviors, especially for women. Women
under stress have been shown to eat significantly more calories and experience more cravings
than non-stressed women. Furthermore, stress raises your blood levels of cortisol, a hormone that
can make you gain weight, especially in the belly area. Try to minimize stress in your
environment by planning ahead, meditating and generally slowing down.

6. Get Enough Sleep

Your appetite is largely affected by hormones that fluctuate throughout the day. Sleep
deprivation disrupts the fluctuations, and may lead to poor appetite regulation and strong
cravings. Studies support this, showing that sleep-deprived people are up to 55% more likely to
become obese, compared to people who get enough sleep. For this reason, getting good
sleep may be one of the most powerful ways to prevent cravings from showing up.

7. Eat Proper Meals

Hunger and a lack of key nutrients can both cause certain cravings. Therefore, it's important to
eat proper meals at mealtimes. This way, your body gets the nutrients it needs and you won't get
extremely hungry right after eating. If you find yourself in need of a snack between meals, make
sure it's something healthy. Reach for whole foods, such as fruits, nuts, vegetables or seeds.

8. Practice Mindful Eating

Mindful eating is about practicing mindfulness, a type of meditation, in relation to foods and
eating. It teaches you to develop awareness of your eating habits, emotions, hunger, cravings and
physical sensations. Mindful eating teaches you to distinguish between cravings and actual
physical hunger. It helps you choose your response, instead of acting thoughtlessly or
impulsively. Eating mindfully involves being present while you eat, slowing down and chewing
thoroughly. It is also important to avoid distractions, like the TV or your smartphone. One 6-
week study in binge eaters found that mindful eating reduced binge eating episodes from 4 to 1.5
per week. It also reduced the severity of each binge.

18
9 STRATEGIES TO ATTRACT CUSTOMERS

1.Collaborate on Special Offers with Local Businesses

One issue that many restaurants run into when using specials, discounts, or other promotions to
drive sales as the cost. In order to create an offer that is tempting enough to bring new customers
in, you generally need to offer a pretty substantial price reduction. Many people are not willing
to gamble there evening out or fun money on a restaurant they have never been to at full price.
Offering buy-one-get-one discounts and similar sales could draw in people, but it may not really
bring the right demographic. Worse, you may find that you don’t actually attract repeat
customers.

19
2.Offer Free Wi-Fi
Never underestimate the power of the internet. While it’s true that you should be harnessing the
internet to help promote your business and streamline its operations, you should also be offering
internet to your customers. It can get more people in the doors and may keep them in your
business longer.

3. E-mail Marketing Incentives

Just because you are a brick-and-mortar business doesn’t mean you can’t use online marketing to
drive sales. One of the fastest and easiest ways to build a customer database is to leave out a
sign-up sheet for your newsletter. You should also include sign up links on your website and any
relevant social media pages, from Snapchat to Facebook. By offering discount codes to
customers for signing up, you will drive interest in following your business. Regularly offering
special sales and exclusive incentives to online followers and newsletter subscribers can also
drive traffic.

4. Capitalize Your Hours

If you don’t already do so, you should track when you make the most sales. Understanding
macro trends in your customers’ patterns can help you maximize your profits. Most restaurants
will find that they are slower on certain days of the week, certain times of the year, and even
certain times during the day.

5. Reaching Out to Local Foodies in Your Area

As we said before, you simply cannot underestimate the power of the internet. While local
gourmands and foodies used to only talk with your friends and coworkers about their
preferences, now they have a much broader audience. Whether they post reviews on Yelp,
Facebook, or their personal blog, people with good taste and adventurous dining habits often find
themselves with hundreds of followers in a short period of time. Reaching out to these people
individually is a great way to use their social media influence for your benefit.

6. Have an Easy to Use Online Ordering App

As a locally-owned small business, you probably worry that the expense of developing a
proprietary app for cell phones and tablets is too much of an investment. For many businesses,
the cost outweighs the benefits .Many modern customers simply find it more convenient to make
choices at their own convenience instead of dealing with a frazzled employee over the phone.
Chances are good that the portion of orders that come in over apps will only expand as mobile
phone usage increases.

20
7. Host Major Events
Special events are a great way to get people into your business. It’s also one of the easiest ways
to help create fond memories of your eatery in the local public. If you have televisions in your
space, consider hosting special event nights related to sporting events, like the Super Bowl. Even
if you don’t have televisions, you can still offer special events and celebratory parties that will
draw the local public to your business. New Year’s Eve is a great night to offer a special prix
fixe menu and early reservations for customers. You could potentially sell out your entire
restaurant weeks before the holiday even hits.

8. Giving Away Free Gift Cards to Your Restaurant

One of the easiest ways to get more people to come in and try your business for the first time is
to offer free food. Of course, just handing out free appetizers or desserts to anyone who walks
into your restaurant will cost you a lot of money. Instead, give away gift cards. That way, you
can control how much money you invest in promoting the business. Give $20 gift cards to a local
charity that’s running an auction. Donate gift cards to the radio station to give away to the 10th
caller after a certain song. Not only will your business benefit from having your name associated
with the giveaway, those gift cards will get people in your restaurant trying your food.

9. Reach Out to Your Media Outlets

Local food culture has never been as trendy as it is right now. People love to think they know the
