TITLE On-Site Glass Recycling
SITE Harper Lane Asphalt Plant
THE SITE

Harper Lane Asphalt Plant is situated adjacent the M25 near St Albans. The current plant was
installed in 1982. It employs 23 staff on site, including a railhead, recycling facility, Asphalt plant,
laboratory, RMX plant and fitters workshop. Asphalt production is permitted to be carried out 365 days
a year, 24hrs a day in the continuous drum mixer plant, at a rate of up to 160t/hr. The plant is capable
of mixing most asphalt material and currently produces and uses RAP, glass and reclaimed filler
where possible in mixes to reduce the virgin aggregate content. Aggregate products are also
produced on site, including Envirosand and a Blended Recycled Type 1 material.

THE SUCCESS

The raw material Processing the raw glass Product - Envirosand

Partly crushed glass is imported to the site from a variety of sources, mostly commercial collections
within 60 miles radius. Harper Lane maintains a stockpile of approximately 7000t of this glass
material. The raw material has a maximum of 4% non-glass content composed of contaminants such
as paper labels, plastic and metal lids.
A crusher and grader are used to separate 0-4mm, 0-8mm fractions and the contaminants. Screening
helps contain the lightweight materials from creating a litter problem. The 0-4mm product is
Envirosand. Sold as a filter media material, the glass sand is also is blended into Type 1 (up to 10%)
and asphalt mixes (up to 5%) on site. The 0-8mm fraction is sold as narrow filter drain material.
The site holds Environmental exemptions for storage and recycling, audited annually by the
Environment Agency.
The recycling operation has been developing since it’s implementation in 2005. In 2011 the Harper
Lane site processed 56,979t of glass, into 13,973t Envirosand, 12,213t into the Blended Recycled
Type 1, 25,144t into Narrow Filter Drain and the remainder into bituminous mixtures.
Envirosand is also exported to other local Lafarge sites on backhaul transport.
All Type 1 that is sold from Harper Lane for construction sites is Recycle Blended, containing 40%
recycled material.

THE BENEFITS

Creation and expansion of the market for recycling of waste glass bottles.
Reduction of virgin aggregates required for aggregate and asphalt material mixes.
