Unusual Options Activity

Unusual options activity might be the most underrated way to trade
in the market. But there’s a reason for that – the tools that can identify
the activity are few and far between. But luckily for you (and me), I have
access to S.C.A.N., and it’s going to help us rake in some major profits.

Unusual options activity is exactly what it sounds like. Every single

day, there are millions of orders flying through the stock-market world.
Most of them are not worth mentioning, but each day, there are also
massive orders hitting the tape. I’m talking orders that are beyond out
of the ordinary for a stock – orders with thousands upon thousands of
contracts being purchased at one time.

Now without the right tools, you’d never see these unusual orders.
But with the right tools, you can’t ignore them.

I didn’t start out with the right tools though. I actually picked up on
this style of trading when I was trading on the floor of CBOE. I started
following some of the largest market movers piggybacking the biggest
traders in the world, following their money – and I noticed a correlated
pattern of large bets being placed a few days before breaking stories, big
mergers, or shocking earnings reports were announced.

This happens because of a harsh truth: Institutions have more edge

than you do – because they have access to information we simply don’t.

Now, you may have heard of the term “insider trading” – when
someone makes a trade based on private knowledge. This type of trading
has landed many a trader in the slammer. I have no interest in trading that
way… or spending my life in jail.

In reality, every single piece of information I’m accessing is

completely public – I’m just the first to see it. I don’t know who is making
the massive trade moves – or why. I just know they’re doing it – and
chances are, they know SOMETHING if they’re making such a big bet.

But let’s break it down in less technical terms…

Imagine you’re betting on the World Series. You’re up in the air about
which team to put your money on. But lucky for you, you’ve noticed
QUITE a few other betters swapping their bets last minute. You follow
along – because these guys are spending a TON of cash on this swap.
Turns out – the star pitcher of one team is on the injured list. Aren’t you
glad you followed the smart move…

Well, that’s how unusual options activity works – just replace the
World Series with the stock market and that injured pitcher with anything
from a CEO’s resignation to a solid earnings report. Because here’s the
thing: Even the big fish in the market don’t make these massive bets
without a good reason. So we follow the money.

The catch? Not every trade based on this unusual options activity is
the right trade for you. And that’s why I’ve dedicated my life to perfecting
S.C.A.N. in order to pinpoint unusual options activity happening in the
market every day.

Spot the Tell

In the last lesson, I explained unusual options activity – and how we
use S.C.A.N. to turn those mysterious market moves into profits day in
and day out.

You see, we don’t know who is placing these massive trades, what
they do for a living, or where they’re located. We don’t even know why
they placed the massive order. And really, we don’t need to care.

We just need the signal. But not every large order that comes through
is one worth taking.

Let’s go back to your World Series betting example. If you remember

correctly, you followed a group of betters who were tipped off that the
star pitcher was on the injured list. But it turns out that they missed a
critical piece of information – the pitcher is only on the injured list for
the first game and will be back for the rest of the Series. Suddenly, you’re
probably wishing you would have done a little extra research, and that
massive bet you made now seems a little hasty.

And the same can be said for placing an options trade without
making sure it checks off all your boxes.

So let’s take a look at my process – from the beginning.

When I first look at the scanner, I see an endless list of options orders
coming from traders all over the world. And to be honest, it looks like
white noise to most people.

I know you’re probably thinking, “AK, I thought this was supposed

to be simple?” But you don’t have to worry about trying to figure that
“white noise” out – because S.C.A.N. does all the heavy lifting for you.

And that’s where the “S” in S.C.A.N. comes in – “spot the tell.”

You see, these are all the trades passing through the market.
And S.C.A.N. helps sort through the junk by pinpointing trades with
massive volume.

Now when I say massive volume, I’m not talking a few hundred
contracts here and there. I’m talking thousands upon thousands of
contracts swapping hands. These orders need to be large enough to really
disrupt the scanner.
After pinpointing these massive orders, I like to take it one step
further, though, and double verify that this trade is right for my portfolio.
And checking off the criteria for a 1450 options trade is easy. Here’s
what I look at…
1. Volume
Volume is the total number of option contracts bought and sold on a
given stock for the day.
1. Open interest
Open interest is the total number of option contracts that are
currently available for the stock.
So when we see these trades, we are looking for the volume to be
larger than the open interest. If it passes that formula, then we look at the
relative size. For instance, if I see someone purchase a large number of
option contracts on Apple Inc. (Nasdaq:AAPL) – it may catch my eye.
But AAPL trades almost 25 million of shares today, so even massive
orders might not mean it’s right for me. That’s why the stock’s relative
size is so important.
And that’s how I ended up with a $9,000 profit on a stock whose
ticker happens to be PZZA.

Follow the Smart Money

In the last lesson, I introduced the “S” in S.C.A.N. In this lesson, I’ll
walk you through exactly how I “spot the tell” with a real trade.
On August 9, 2018, a standout signal hit the tape. The ticker was
PZZA. I had no idea what the company was, but I couldn’t ignore a) the
number of contracts being bought and b) that the ticker for this stock was
basically “pizza.” Turns out, the company behind the ticker was Papa
John’s, and someone was loading up on calls as quickly as they could.
Here’s a look at the signal I saw…

Now, I know you’re probably looking at this wondering “AK, what
am I looking at?” But really, the only thing you need to focus on right
now is: 4524 PZZA Oct $45 Calls at $1.30.
What this means is simple: Some trader somewhere in the world
bought 4,524 PZZA Oct $45 Calls for $1.30 a pop. That means someone
dished out nearly $590,000 on this trade. Now, I don’t know about you –
but I wouldn’t just throw over half a million dollars into the mix without
a good reason, and I’m betting this trader wouldn’t either.
But while that large bet is eye catching, what surprised me even more
was seeing the news stories surrounding the stock at the same time of
the trade. The CEO was under fire, and legal action was being pursued –
things weren’t looking great.
Yet some trader somewhere in the world had taken not only a bullish
stand on PZZA but a stance that could cost them over half a million. And like
I said earlier, you don’t just gamble that amount of money without a reason.
See, this is when I think it’s important to remind you that while the
news can help your trading game, you should never let it dictate your
final move.

That’s another thing that’s great about S.C.A.N… it doesn’t care

about the news hitting the headlines. It’s just looking at the cold, hard
numbers and delivering the best trades that match its algorithm.
So when I saw over 4,000 contracts being purchased and a bet that large
being placed, I was ready to add this standout position to my portfolio.
But before I could jump into the trade, I had to make sure PZZA fit my
trading criteria. And that brings us to the next step in our S.C.A.N. process…

The Ichimoku Cloud

When I first saw the signal that S.C.A.N. pinpointed on PZZA, I
wanted to dive headfirst into the move. But I’ve learned the hard way not
to let excitement get the best of me. Before I could be sure this was a
worthwhile trade, I had to follow the next step in my trading plan…
Confirm the signal.
When it comes to confirming the signal, I have a tool up my sleeve
that I trust more than most things in my life. It’s called the Ichimoku
cloud, and it’s arguably the most accurate way to predict whether a stock
has momentum, how much support is behind it, and how much resistance
it’s facing. Basically, the Ichimoku cloud gives you a glimpse into that
stock’s future.
Now truthfully, I could write a whole book about this tool, but if
you’re anything like me, you don’t have the patience or the time to read
an entire book about this. Hell, if you’re using my system, you don’t
really even need to know how this works. I’ll always do the heavy lifting
for you. But if you’re curious, here’s a breakdown of this powerful tool.
In simple terms, this Japanese trading tool helps traders identify
trend directions, gauge momentum, and find support and resistance
levels – and all of this can be done with one look. What I mean is that
with a single glance, I can identify the market trend all while identifying
potential buy/sell signals within that trend. This is all possible thanks to a
cloud formed by two of the moving averages within the indicator.
Those moving averages (or more simply put, lines) are the backbone
of the cloud and how it is formed. Now like I mentioned earlier, this isn’t
something you need to understand or even know to be a successful trader
– with that said, though, I’m going to break these lines down for you.
Each formula calculates a stock’s average share price over a
certain period.
a. Tenkan-Sen runs an average of the high and low prices over the
last nine periods.

b. Kijun-Sen is the same formula as the Tenkan-Sen but averages

prices over a period of 26 periods.

c. Senkou Span A is the midpoint of the Tenkan-Sen and Kijun-Sen

plotted in the future.

d. Senkou Span B is the midpoint of the last 52 days plotted in the

future.

Finally, you have the Chikou Span, which is the stock’s closing price
over the last 26 days.

While this may seem complex, reading the Ichimoku cloud is

incredibly simple. If a stock’s price is above the cloud, your move would
be bullish. If its price is below the cloud, your move would be bearish. If
the price is in the cloud, it’s neutral.

Needless to say, I’m not using an ancient abacus or a calculator to

crunch these numbers. I had some smart programmers integrate the
Ichimoku cloud into S.C.A.N. It took 1,700 lines of code, and now, it can
automatically plot the cloud on any stock’s chart.

Believe it or not though, the Ichimoku cloud was almost lost to

Western civilization. It was invented by a Japanese journalist before
World War II. He spent decades trying to crack the code – then spent 20
years testing it over and over again. And he didn’t reveal his findings until
1968. But get this – since his work was published in Japanese over a half
century ago – it remained a well-kept secret for a long time.

How did I find it?

One of the big advantages of hanging out in a Buddhist temple in

Asia with a bunch of monks is downtime.

The Ichimoku cloud is an unbelievably powerful tool – almost like

having a stock-market crystal ball.

In fact, thanks to that “crystal ball,” the signal that we talked about
earlier – on PZZA – was confirmed despite all the negative press
surrounding the stock.

Confirm the Signal

In this lesson, I’m going to show you just how I used the Ichimoku
cloud to confirm the signal on PZZA.

Now as you might recall from a few lessons ago, a signal for PZZA
hit the tape on August 9, 2018.

In just a few clicks, I pulled up the Ichimoku cloud – and it was

incredibly easy to read.

What you’re seeing is the Ichimoku cloud. Notice how these shapes
that you see look like – complete shocker – clouds. But really, this is
what the cloud looks like.

Now, there’s a lot of technical lingo I could walk you through, but
here’s the simplest way to look at it…

If the stock is above the cloud, it’s trending up – and you’ve got a
moneymaking opportunity. If the stock is below the cloud, it’s trending
down – and you’ve still got a moneymaking opportunity.

That’s what makes options so powerful: There’s money to be made in

any market – up, down, or sideways – at any time.

So I checked how the PZZA trade looked on the Ichomoku cloud

and got the confirmation I was seeking. The peak volume was above the

cloud, signaling that the stock was trending up. That gave me the green
light on this trade.

Automate and Execute

By now, you’ve learned how S.C.A.N. pinpoints a handful of lucrative
trade opportunities each day and how I use the Ichimoku cloud to confirm
the signal. Next, we’re going to talk about what the “A” in S.C.A.N. means...

Automate and execute.

That means we’ll preprogram the trade to go live automatically if and

only if all conditions are met…

And automatically cash you out when the time is right, depositing
any winnings into your account.

You see, S.C.A.N. doesn’t just pinpoint the trades; it also helps you
pinpoint the sweet spot for profits.

Because when S.C.A.N. finds a trade, it simultaneously calculates its

average true range.

Here’s the formula…

This formula takes the high price for a stock on a given day, subtracts
the low price, and uses the difference as a range. S.C.A.N. calculates an
average true range over the previous 14 days. And it uses that number to
give you a “profit target.” The profit target is exactly what it sounds like
– the stock price you are looking for to indicate that it’s time to take the
profits from your options trade.

And if you want to automate your trade, you just pop that profit target
into your trading platform, and you never have to lift another finger.

On top of this, it also helps give you peace of mind. You don’t have to
sit by the computer watching your option’s every move. That’s not the 1450
lifestyle. This lifestyle is all about freedom – and I don’t know about you,
but being chained to a computer screen is not my definition of freedom.

So profit targets can really help you elevate your trading game. And
don’t worry – you’ll never have to work these numbers out for yourself.
I’ll always provide the profit target for you on every trade I pinpoint for

Now listen – I’m not looking to time the market perfectly so that I
always sell at the peak. That’s too risky and too foolish. When a stock
begins to lose momentum, I want my money. And I’ll move on to the next
opportunity. And profit targets help me execute on that end as well.

Options Trades Made Easy

In this lesson, we’ll take a closer look at how you can “automate and
execute” your trades by following our PZZA example.

When it comes to adding a trade to your portfolio, the first thing you
want to do is ensure that the option contract you are purchasing matches
the one the scanner has pinpointed.

Every option comes with an option ticker, and these chains are a great
point of reference to ensure that you’re locking in the right profit opportunity.

Here’s what I saw for PZZA…

PZZA October 18, 2018 $45 Call (PZZA181018C00045000)

Let’s break this down into four parts.

PZZA: This is the stock ticker (or the underlying asset) of the option
you’ll be buying. In this example, PZZA is the ticker for Papa John’s.

October 18, 2018/181018: This is the expiration date. In short, it’s

the day your option will expire – but we’ll go deeper into that later in this
course. The date is displayed like this (181015) – the year comes first,
followed by the month, then the day.

$45/00045000: This is the option’s strike price. This gives you the
right – but not the obligation – to buy PZZA at this price between now
and expiration.

Call/C: There are two types of options… puts and calls. This
signals which type you are buying, and as you can probably guess, the
“C” in the option ticker shows that you are purchasing a Call. (For a
put, it would be a “P.”)

Now that you’ve made sure that you have the proper option ticker
– you’ll want to submit the recommended limit price for this trade. The
limit price is the most you’d want to pay for the option contract. I’ll
always advise against going above the recommended limit price as it
could really impact your profits – or worse, lead you to lose money. So

trust S.C.A.N., and stick to the plan. If you don’t get into the trade, no
worries. There will be plenty more.

For PZZA though, the recommended limit price was $1.30. And
that’s exactly what I got into the trade for.
And now, you’re ready to place the trade. So hit the “submit order”
button, and hope that your order gets filled. From there, you would set
your “target price” as we talked about earlier. And now, you can kick
your feet up and watch your profits roll in.
It really is that easy.
Now, we’re to the final letter of S.C.A.N. – and it’s my personal
favorite. Soon, it’ll be your favorite too.
Because the N in S.C.A.N. stands for “net worth boosted!” and
you’ll want to hear it again, and again, and again.

Net Worth Boosted!

In this lesson, we’re going to break down the most exciting part of
my S.C.A.N. formula.

I’m talking net worth boosted!

You see, with each winning trade you place, your net worth will be
boosted over time. And every boost gets you closer to your goals.

For instance, S.C.A.N. actually boosted my own personal net worth 50-
fold in two years – well, under two years actually. And now, it’s your turn.

A lot of the time, people ask me, “AK, if you could go back and tell
your younger self one thing, what would it be?”

And I never even have to second-guess my answer – I know exactly

what I would say…

“Stick to your trading plan, and never get too comfortable.”

Back in the day, I went against both of these guidelines. I wandered

away from my trading plan because I got too comfortable. I truly believed
that I knew more than the big institutions – I believed that I could
outsmart the market. And that mistake cost me over half a million dollars.
But here’s the thing – the institutions, the market – they are always a
step ahead. But you can use that step to your advantage. Follow in their
footsteps, and reap the benefits without all the risk.

Speaking of reaping the benefits of unusual option activity – did

I mention that I scored a $9,000 profit on that PZZA trade before the
market closed that same day? My net worth was most certainly boosted.

And while it would have been easy to take that money and spend it
quicker than I got it – I chose to do something different…

It’s called rolling your profits.

When you first get started, you only want to risk what you’re
comfortable with. For some people, that’s $25, and for others, that’s

$1,000. Either is a great starting point. But as you continue to boost

your net worth – you’ll want to start rolling your profits. What I mean by
“rolling your profits” is that for every profit you make, you roll a small
amount into your next trade.

So for instance, if you spend $25 on a trade and you make a $10
profit, roll $5 of that into your next trade, and risk $30 – and so on.

But here are two important rules to follow when it comes to

increasing your risk portfolio.

Never increase your risk portfolio unless you’re…

A. Making money…

B. And making money consistently.

These rules are important to keep in mind, but as you continue to

boost your net worth here at the 1450 Club, remember that rolling your
profits is a great way to reach your goals even faster.

1450 Trader’s Checklist

You’ve made it – and you’re just about ready to make your first
1450 Club trade.
But before you jump right in, let’s make sure we have the basics covered.
The first thing you need to do before trading is ensure that you have
your trading account set up with the proper clearance. Now, there are a
ton of brokers out there, so be sure to call around and figure out which
best suits you.
Once you settle with a company, your next step is to lock in your
options trading clearance. Now for the 1450 Club, we will be placing
simple put and call trades – for most brokers, that means either Level 1
or 2. Remember to be honest about your experience when going through
this process. This ensures that they give you the proper clearance, which
can protect you in the long run.
From there, you’ll want to fund your account and make sure you have
access to the live trading room. We start at 9:30 a.m. (ET). And the trades
come quick, so you’ll want to be sure you’re logged in and ready to rock
right on the hour.
Once you have all that in place, you’re ready to get started.
And to ensure that I set you up for the most profitable future, I’ve
also made you an options-trading checklist. This checklist is a great tool
to ensure that you not only score profits but protect yourself. I hope it
helps you out as you dive into this journey.

Glossary
Ask: The price an option seller wants to receive for the option.
Automate and execute: This is the third step of my S.C.A.N.
process, in which my system will help you preprogram the trade to go
live if and only if all conditions are met. It will also help you cash out
when the time is right.
Bearish: A trader’s stance on the market when they believe it is
going to move down.
Bid: The maximum price that a buyer is willing to pay for an option.
Bullish: This is a trader’s stance on the market when they believe the
market is going to move up.
Call option: A type of option in which the buyer has the right, but
not the obligation, to buy a specified amount of an underlying security
at a set price. You would buy a call option if you believe the stock (the
underlying security) is going up in price.
Confirm the signal: This is the second step of my S.C.A.N. process
in which my system confirms the signal with the Ichimoku cloud.
Expiration date: The last date that an option contract is valid.
Ichimoku cloud: A Japanese trading tool that helps traders identify
trend directions by gauging momentum and drawing support and
resistance levels. This is all possible thanks to a cloud formed by two
of the moving averages within the indicator. The cloud is formed by the
following lines:
a. Tenkan-Sen runs an average of the high and low prices over the
last 9 periods.
b. Kijun-Sen is the same formula, except now it’s over a period of
26 days periods.
c. Senkou Span A is the midpoint of the Tenkan-Sen and Kijun-Sen
plotted in the future.

d. Senkou Span B is the midpoint of the last 52 days plotted in

the future.
e. Chikou Span is the stock’s closing price over the last 26 days.
Moving average: A technical indictor used to help dig into price
action. This tool helps eliminate the noise by filtering out things
like short-term price fluctuations.
Net worth boosted!: This is the fourth and final step of my S.C.A.N.
process in which my system is going to boost your net worth by
delivering massive profits.
Open interest: The total number of option contracts held at the end
of any given day.
Option: A contract that gives the buyer the right, but not the
obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset at a specified price prior to the
expiration date. Each option contract equates to 100 shares of the stock.
Option clearance: The approval you will need from your broker to
trade options.
Option ticker: This code represents the option contract you
are purchasing. It lists the stock, the expiration date, whether you’re
purchasing a call or put, and the strike price.
Order type: This is the type of order you are placing when it comes
to options. You can choose buy-to-open, sell-to-open, buy-to-close, or
sell-to-close.
Profit target: A predetermined price to sell your option at for profits.
Put option: A type of option in which the buyer has the right, but not
the obligation, to sell a specified amount of an underlying security at a set
price. You would sell a put option if you believe the stock (the underlying
security) is going down in price.
S.C.A.N.: My proprietary trading method that stands for “spot the
tell,” “confirm the signal,” “automate and execute,” and “net worth –
boosted!”

Spot the tell: This is the first step of my S.C.A.N. process, in which
my system spots unusual option orders hitting the tape.

Strike price: The fixed price at which the owner of the option can
buy (in the case of a call), or sell (in the case of a put) the underlying
security.

Time decay: A decline in the option’s value as a result of time

passing. Time decay normally accelerates as an option nears its
expiration date.

Underlying asset: The stock/company on which an option’s price

is based.

Volume: The total number of option contracts bought and sold for
the day, for that particular strike price.
