Reverse Mentoring
Video Intro

Voiceover

(cue instructional background music) Many of us are familiar

with the concept of mentoring, which is when an experienced
employee or senior leader offers advice, guidance, and
assistance to a less experienced member of the team. What if
things were the other way around?

Instead of information only flowing in one direction, reverse
mentoring gives more senior members of the organization an
opportunity to learn from high-performing junior colleagues.
They then trade skills, behaviors, and management insights.

General Electric example

(display picture of GE) According to an article by James Young,

General Electric is often credited as the first organization to
take a more formalized approach to reverse mentoring. Jack
Welch, the CEO at the time instructed 500 of his top executives
to pair up with a young, technically-inclined mentor in order to
learn more about how the internet worked. To ensure this radical
approach was accepted among senior professionals, he also took
on a young mentor of his own. Since then, other companies have
adopted the same approach. Jack Welch, who in his inimitable
style described it as “tipping the organization upside down.”

Creating a Reverse Mentoring program

(include voice-text for every topic) There are also a few things
to look out for when attempting to create an atmosphere or
program within an organization for reverse mentoring. Decide if
the organization would benefit from a formal or informal
mentorship program; set up guidelines and establish mentors and
mentees; relate the mentorship to a business need and have them
meet regularly whether that be for an hour a week or for 30
minutes every day.

Video Outro

Voiceover

Many of us know what traditional mentoring entails. This video

covered a new way of doing things. Hopefully, we now know the
new concept of reverse mentoring, which is when a junior team
member offers advice, guidance, and assistance to a senior
member. For Julie Nyanjom, a lecturer in the School of Business
and Law at Edith Cowan University in Australia, the greater
adoption of reverse mentoring is a reflection of how learning is
changing. Which she is quoted saying, “Lifelong learning means
people will be learning new things all through their lives,
regardless of their chronological age or status within the
organization. Just like other spheres of life, the mentoring
practice should be inclusive.”
