External towers and
expansion units for the
270 and 8xx models

A migration tower is the link between legacy SPD and the

newer PCI technology used on the 8xx system. It physically
connects units using the new HSL technology.

A #503x Migration Tower I is the conversion of an installed

6xx, Sxx, or 7xx system unit into a tower. The system
processor cage assembly and backplane assembly are
removed and replaced by a new backplane assembly, in
which HSL connection ports connect to the new 8xx family of
processors.

The #5077 Migration Tower II is used when a customer

upgrades an AS/400e 640, 650, S30, S40, 730, or 740 server
to an iSeries server and wants to connect existing SPD-
based expansion towers to the upgraded system. It also can
be ordered with a new iSeries 830 or 840 to attach any of
these SPD towers to the new system.

Conversions can be made from the SPD-attached #5065

Storage/PCI and the #5066 1.8M PCI I/O Tower to the HSL-
attached #5074 or #5079 PCI I/O towers. The #5075 PCI
Expansion Tower can be converted to the larger #5074 PCI
Expansion Tower.

The towers and expansion units supported by the iSeries

servers are identified in this table.

AS/400e server 250

The AS/400e server 250 offers the lowest entry pricing for
transaction workloads where growth is minimal and
application or Web serving is not expected. The Model 250
system unit is a PCI-only based unit.

This section identifies the base components and capacities

for the Model 250 AS/400e. It includes the summary charts
for each processing unit.

Model 250 base and optional

configuration
The base system contains a planar, which combines both the
processor and MFIOP in one card. The base memory is 256
MB. The MFIOP provides support for two low-speed PCI card
slots and one high speed PCI card slot. The base disk
controller is embedded on the backplane.

A maximum of ten disk units is supported on the Model 250.

The use of an external disk is not supported.

Features: CIF and
release dependency

The following table lists many significant feature codes for the
current iSeries servers. It identifies those that are Customer
Install Features (CIF) and indicates the processor and towers
that support the feature. The table also includes information
about how the feature is ordered for placement within the
model or tower and the minimum supporting OS/400 release.

The table does not represent a complete list. For example,

most line cords, cables, and specify features are not listed.

Note: The SPD Tower column indicates any #50xx tower,

except the #5065 and #5066.

Legend for table values

CIF
! Y in CIF Column = Customer Install Feature or no
installation is necessary.
! N in CIF Column = IBM Authorized Service Provider is
required to install this feature.
! - = Not applicable.

Processor or Tower
! M = MES. Field installation only.
! P = Plant installation. New system orders only.
! B = Both. Field or plant installation.
! S = Supported as a migrated feature only.
! PU = Plant installation. MES installation for model
upgrades only.
! C = Supported. MES installation for feature
conversions only.
! - = Not supported in this tower.

Release
! Minimum release of OS/400 to support this feature.

Note: The #8079, #9074, and #9079 are identified as a

CIF for the purposes of a new MES.

AS/400 and AS/400e
RISC models

This section identifies hardware and performance

characteristics, including maximum capacities for main
storage, disk storage, LAN, and communications for those
RISC servers and AS/400 system processors that are not
currently marketed by IBM. The values presented for disk
storage are in GB. They recognize the maximum amount
allowed when supported by the applicable OS/400 release
level.

Note: Only the maximum allowed main storage value is

shown in these tables.

upgrades

The following charts indicate the upgrade paths supported

within the 270 models, and between and within the 8xx
models. The data is current per announcements made
through 29 April 2002.

Note: Not all processor upgrade paths that are available

at the time of publication are listed in this section. For a
more complete listing of upgrade options, refer to the
IBM Redbooks Web site (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com)
for the iSeries Supported Upgrades tip.

upgrade tables
The B and M values in the upgrade tables indicate the type of
upgrade supported:
! B = CE upgrades the installed system with box of parts
(a parts order).
! M = CE upgrades with a new manufactured CEC unit;
otherwise known as a Manufactured MES, or a roll in/

How to get IBM Redbooks

Search for additional Redbooks or Redpieces, view,
download, or order hardcopy from the Redbooks Web site:
ibm.com/redbooks

become Redpieces and sometimes just a few chapters will be
published this way. The intent is to get the information out
much quicker than the formal publishing process allows.
