For my professional activity hours, I attended a class with the American Heart Association. The
class the I attended was the Advanced Cardiac Life Support. During the class my purpose was to
further my education and understand the algorithms for cardiac and respiratory arrest. This was
an awesome opportunity because I was able to take this class with a couple other people in my
cohort.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
The class was held at the Eclipse CPR Training center off of Speedway Blvd. We were required
to purchase the ACLS book designed by the American Heart Association and study the material.
Before the class we had to take a pre-test that consisted of about 60 questions. On the day of the
class it lasted about 6 hours and we were able to review basic CPR. After the completion on the
class we had to answer a 50-question test question. Overall this activity took 8 hours in total.
This experience has been very valuable and applicable to fourth semester students. This
opportunity has allowed me to add ACLS certification onto my resume for future employers to
see. This is also helpful because many employers will require that their staff already be certified
in ACLS. In addition, the information that was provided during the class will better prepare me
In order for me to continue this experience I will have to stay up to date with my certification. I
will also be able to use the knowledge that I have learned in this course to ensure that I know
I would recommend this professional activity to future students because of how many benefits
that comes from being certified in ACLS. As I talked about before, this certification strengthens
my resume and shows employers that I am one step ahead of the game. The only down fall with
this professional activity is that it was around $200 in total, which may not be feasible for
everyone.
