FUSION OF SKILLS
INTERACTIVE SYSTEM
This is the term used to describe the technologies that interactive system
designers work with. They are information processing devices and systems
that respond dynamically to people’s actions.
THE INTERFACE
The interface to an interactive system is all those parts of a system with which
people come into contact, physically, perceptually and conceptually:
• Physically
o Pressing buttons, moving levers. The interactive system may
respond by providing feedback through the pressure of the
button or lever
• Perceptually
o The device displays things on a screen which we can see, or
makes noises which we can hear
• Conceptually
o We can try to work out what the system does and what we
should be doing. The device provides messages and other
displays which are designed to help us do this.
BEING HUMAN-CENTERED
Designers need the mixture of skills that allows them to be able to:
• People: Study and understand the activities and aspirations of people
and the contexts within which technology might prove useful and hence
generate requirements for technology
• Technology: Know the possibilities offered by technology
• Activities and contexts: Research and design technological solutions
that fit in with people, the activities they want to undertake and the
contexts in which those activities occur.
• Design: Evaluate alternative designs and do more research until a
solution is arrived at.
