1 Peter 2:9-10
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special
possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of
darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the
people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
A Chosen People
The language that Peter uses here is the language God used towards
Israelites when he chose to liberate them from slavery to the Egyptians in the Old
Testament. Now Peter, in the New Testament, is using that same language
towards the Gentiles – people who are not Jewish. The historic purpose of God is
that all people would become his people; that all people would be liberated from
their bondage to sin and death. That’s the full measure of God’s love for us that
his chief concern is for us to be in relationship with him and to be freed from our
sin.
We as God’s chosen people aren’t chosen based on nationality, gender,
race, or ethnicity. Paul says in Galatians 3:28, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile,
neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ
Jesus.” We aren’t chosen based on anything we’ve done. Romans 3:23 says, “For
all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” No, we are chosen because of
God’s love for us. God wants to be with you forever because that’s the reason
God created you in the first place.
In these difficult times where there is uncertainty, anxiety, and stress
remember how God sees you. Remember that God has not abandoned you or his
promises for you. You are still chosen by God to be with him forever. You are still
a child of God. You are still God’s special possession. May your heart be filled to
overflowing with love for God that praises might burst forth from your lips.
When it seems like there is nothing else, the love and mercy of God prevails.

A Pandemic Prayer

Loving God,

Your desire is for our wholeness and well being.

We hold in tenderness and prayer the collective suffering of our world at this time.
We grieve precious lives lost and vulnerable lives threatened.
We ache for ourselves and our neighbors, standing before an uncertain future.
We pray: may love, not fear go viral.
Inspire our leaders to discern and choose wisely, aligned with the common good.
Help us to practice social distancing and reveal to us new and creative ways to
come together in common spirit and in solidarity. Call us to profound trust in
your faithful presence.
You, the God who does not abandon.

The Sudlersville UMC Food Pantry continues to serve the community.

Our clients were thankful to see us during normal Pantry hours although our
execution is all done as curbside service, rather than inside the church.
Please watch for upcoming emails from me requesting items needed for the May
distribution as bulk purchasing will still not be an option for us. If each of us are
able to purchase a couple of the items as needed, we will have enough to provide
for those in the greatest need.
I wish to thank those that contributed to this past month by purchasing food,
contributing money, assisting with packing and distribution, as well as the
encouraging words to me. It has been refreshing to see some new volunteers
along with some of the regulars.
I wish blessings to all. With God's help and our perseverance, we will get through
this together.

Sudlersville Elementary School Plastic Cap Recycle Project

There is a bin at the parking lot door at Calvary-Asbury UMC to help
our elementary friends collect bottle caps that are being turned into
furniture! They have already received their first table that was made
from the first batch collected. Almost all types of plastic caps are
acceptable except the ones with a metal spring action.
