INTRODUCTION
Demostrative adjectives

Los demostrativos (demonstratives, en inglés) son this, that, these,  those. Sirven para

señalar a qué persona o cosa se está haciendo referencia. This y that se emplean
con sustantivos contables en singular, y these y those con sustantivos contables en
plural. This y these señalan lo que está cerca del hablante o un evento que tiene lugar en el
momento del habla, mientras que that y those señalan lo que está alejado del hablante en
términos de distancia o de tiempo.

Aprende a distinguir y emplear correctamente los demostrativos en inglés y practica en la

sección de ejercicios.

PURPOSE
Los adjetivos demostrativos se utilizan para determinar la posición de las cosas. En
español encontramos tres distintos grados de proximidad. Esto (para lo que está más
cerca del sujeto). Eso (situado a media distancia) y Aquello (lejano).

Example
Girl: I’d like to buy a tennis racket. Mine broke this week and I have an important
match this weekend. Why is this racket so much more expensive than those ones
on the wall?

Shop assistant: Those ones over there are for beginners. This one here is better

quality and is for advanced tennis players.

Girl: I’ll take this one then. I had my first tennis lesson when I was five. That night I
dreamt of being a famous tennis player, and I’ve been playing ever since.

Use

Con sustantivos contables en singular se utilizan this y that. Para sustantivos

contables en plural se emplean these y those.

Example:

This tennis racket here – that tennis racket over there

These tennis rackets here – those tennis rackets over there

Los demostrativos ponen de manifiesto la distancia que existe entre en hablante y

el elemento al que se refiere, pudiendo ser esta distancia física o temporal.

Place:

Cuando los demostrativos se utilizan para señalar seres que se encuentran a una
cierta distancia física, this y these indican lo que está cerca del
orador: here; y that y those lo el orador no tiene al alcance de la mano: there.

Ejemplo:

Why is this racket so much more expensive than those ones on the wall?

Time:

Cuando los demostrativos se utilizan para señalar un acontecimiento próximo o

distante en el tiempo al momento del habla, entonces se utilizan this y these para
un periodo que incluye el momento del habla: now, this morning.

Example:

My tennis racket broke this week. (Ya ha sucedido)

I have an important match this weekend. (Aún no ha sucedido)

Los demostrativos that y those se utilizan para señalar un periodo de tiempo que
ya ha pasado o que ocurrirá en un futuro lejano.

Example:

I had my first tennis lesson when I was five. That night I dreamt of being a famous

tennis player.

Demonstrative pronouns

También es posible utilizar los demostrativos omitiendo el sustantivo al que hacen

referencia. En ese caso es necesario, sin embargo, acompañar el demostrativo
de one, en singular, o ones, en plural.

Example:

This/that racket → this/that one 

this one here is better quality.

These/those rackets → these/those ones

those ones over there are for beginners.
