1. Introduction

As the reality television show pops up in these days, more and more people are

interested in watching these shows as they include a wide range of variety of channels

as well as also part of the entertaining programs for the people. It also makes people

feel less bored when they are watching it. Also, these reality television shows brings

people into the reality fields environment that they have never participated before. Most

of the reality television shows are set up due to the advancement in technology (Julia

Raeside, 2011). The target audience selected for this reality television show is mainly

18 years old and above because every day these age groups do watch these reality

television shows for the purpose of entertaining themselves as well as also to have less

stress while watching it.

The main purpose of this research topic is that watching reality television shows

like CNN Future Summit, which is Saving the Planet Earth could also really used to

impact people’s behavior (Andrea & Elizabeth, 2011) because these shows could

educate as well as also to give and express knowledge and ideas to the society in

which they will be able to imitate the same as shown in reality television shows

(Raeside, 2011). Moreover after watching these reality television shows, people tend to

change minds and have influence of much of violence behavior (Andrea & Elizabeth,

2011). Watching reality television shows also displays much of moral dilemmas as well

as having a more immediate and lasting impact on the society (Peek, 2014) than

traditional programming if they interpret behaviors (Staff, 2014) in the shows as

appropriate ways to act in real life situations. Therefore, the objective research for

5|Page
choosing this research proposal is to find out the possible reasons of what makes the

young female Singaporeans motivated in watching these reality television shows.

2. Personal Experiences and Perspectives

It has been observed that people tend to act strangely while and after

watching these reality television shows. Being a student researcher, I would like

to find out the reasons on why most of the female Singaporeans are watching too

much reality television shows.

3. Research Topic and Field

This research topic proposal is conducting about the reality television

shows aged of 18 years old and above.

4. Locating Research Literature

The location of the research literature for this research proposal is

obtained from online resources and is required for the research process of

locating the right literature review. This is done in order to conduct a better and

right literature review for this topic research proposal. The materials obtained in

this research literature involves those from online resources such as newspaper

and magazines articles as well as also those of the past research papers that

had been found out in Murdoch University Online Library through the ProQuest

Central for reviewing those including the past research papers as well as the

peer reviewed articles for the location of the right and accurate literature review.

6|Page
Also, the updated version of the materials on the topic of how the young

female Singaporeans do have realistic expectations of the quality life after

watching the reality television shows could be drawn out the information easily as

they would be issued on online media such as social media like facebook and

others as well as also on the traditional media like television and newspaper.

5. Literature Review

The literature review of this research is that it needs social interaction between

people and the television shows.

5.1 Past Year Researches

5.1.1 In-depth study of reality tv shows appeal

According to the first article (Papacharissi, 2007), it tells us that the

method of survey is being used in this article to collect the information and data

on how the respondents take participation for watching the reality television

shows. It is necessary to carry out because the unique contribution of this

method for this topic research is that, it retrieves to collect data on people’s

characteristics, such as demographic data and also it cannot answer non-sense

question (R. Sapsford, 2006). Using survey will be efficient for this study as it

reduces time and the efficiency of price. In addition, survey research runs

minimal risks of compromising necessary and relevant data (Susan E. Wyse,

2012). It is suitable because large amounts of data can be collected from large

samples and large populations in a cost-effective way (R. Sapsford, 2006).

During the survey, the respondents are required what experiences and

7|Page
knowledge they get from answering these survey questionnaire. The survey

analyses details such as the emotion for watching these shows were for hobbies

and for enjoyment. This article needs to be more focused on in-depth survey to

get most accurate results being answered by the respondents. It also tells more

about that people (Zala, 2015) are devoting most of their times watching these

reality television shows and such that compared to individuals and groups of

people watching reality television, the individuals are more likely to watch to

achieve the needs for togetherness due to less level of social interactivity.

5.1.2 Self-Disclosure and the Appreciation of Members in Reality-TV

This article ( Nurit, 2014) tells more about the relationship between the audience

and reality television. The methods used in this article is experiment to demonstrate

how the participants are doing in reality television shows. It elaborates such as in

famous reality television shows, in everyday routine, the society are expected to publish

nonintimate news at the start of the relation and acknowledge more intimate news as

the relations improves.

5.1.3 The effects of satisfaction while watching reality television shows

According to this article, it uses the method of participant observation. It also tells

more about that there could be some effects on gaining of satisfaction while watching

reality television shows.

8|Page
6. Conclusion for Literature Review

All in all, watching reality television shows can make connection with the reality

world to know the situation what is happening outside the world and also to have

awareness in the nearby surroundings.

7. Research Question

The research topic will be mainly about how young female Singaporeans watch

reality television shows. The research question would be “Does young female

Singaporeans have realistic expectations of the quality life after watching the reality

television shows?” This topic is mostly significant because it gives the community a

wider range of views from watching these reality television shows.

8. Research Purpose and Target Audience

The research purpose is to see how young female Singaporeans expect their

quality life after watching these reality television shows and also what they might

obtain what kind of information after watching these television shows. The

methodology that will be using in this research proposal is mainly the survey

research because it creates the outline. This methodology is very important

because it needs to be accurate and involve the following steps such as,

9|Page
developing the survey instrument or questionnaire so that the target audience

can understand and answer easily without having anomalous results. The

second methodology is that, it needs to choose the representation of the selected

group of respondents. The final method of methodology is that, it needs to carry

out the survey in an efficient manner in order to get the best possible data from

the respondents.

Purpose

The purpose of this research proposal is to examine how the young female

Singaporeans are motivated and what they really expect of their life after watching

these reality television shows. Also, this is to bring social alertness to this research topic

proposal.

9. Audience

The targeted selected age groups for the audience are mainly ages of 18 years

old and above because these groups of audience watch the reality television shows the

most for relieving stress and for other purposes like entertaining amusement for

themselves and also to have less boredom while watching these reality television

shows. The general community is also another way to draw the attention of the

audiences after watching these reality television shows. As there could be many

changes in today’s world technology, the community should also be aware of by having

socially responsible behavior which means keeping aware of the news value and

behaving ethically and with sensitivity approach towards social, cultural, economic and

10 | P a g e
the environmental issues. It is also important to remind the community about the

importance and issues of the social responsibility such as shaping the future’s

generations and also increasing knowledge about the global issues within the society as

to give education among them. There could also be some consequences of social

responsibility like the ignorance to other’s problems and also there could be no

assistance rendering when you are in charge of need.
