Additional controller in the same network

Use of more than one controller in the same network district without mutual disturbance.
Remote control connections are NOT necessary.

Automatic switch for Vo>Vmax

If the coil position is on the opposite side of the resonance curve and the resonance peak must not be passed
because of Vo > Vmax, then this options enables to reach the tuning point by disconnecting the Peterson coil
during passing the resonance peak or by damping the Vo by connection of a resistor. These switching
operations are controlled by a digital output of the controller.

1.3 Control basics
1.3.1 Earthfault compensation

Earthfault compensation (arc suppression) is based on the principle, that the capacitive part of the fault current at
fault location can be equalized (compensated) by the inductive current of the ASC. Hence, with ideal compensation
only a very small resistive residual current flows over the fault location.

IL inductive compensation current of the ASC

The compensated system can be described by the following parameter:

Ipos adjusted current of the ASC (= IL)

Ic capacitive discharge current of the system. At exact tuning (Ipos = Ic) the
neutral-to-ground voltage measured on the ASC (sound network condition)
reaches its maximum ("resonance - point"). Inside the controller this value
is named Ires.

Page 12 EFC50-V1.00
1 General December 2010
Detuning v
Variation of the adjustment of the ASC from the resonance point. Detuning at the resonance point is zero (v = 0).
v = (Ipos - Ic) / Ic
Asymmetry k
Due to the geometrical arrangement of the conductors the phase-to-ground capacitances are not equal. For the
equivalent diagram a mean capacitance C and a capacitance dC of one phase (causing the asymmetry) are
assumed.
k = dC/3C.
Asymmetry Zu
The asymmetry can also be described by an asymmetry impedance between phase and earth. In the case of a
capacitive asymmetry „Zu“ equals the impedance of dC, in the case of a high resistive fault it equals the fault
resistance. The EFC50 calculates the amount of this impedance during an automatic tuning operation. If
required a signal can be created, when Zu falls below an adjustable threshold.

Damping d
Leakage resistances and losses of the ASC dampen the resonance circuit formed by the ASC and the line
capacitances.

Resonance curve
In systems with natural asymmetries (k > 0) the necessary inductive compensation current for the single-phase
fault condition can be pre- determined in the healthy network condition. By variation of the ASC’s inductivity the
following characteristic shape of the neutral-to-ground voltage is received

Vp

1.3.2 Control by coil movement

The EFC50 uses two different control procedures:

- Control with negligible system perturbations

Basically, system perturbations can be neglected with a neutral-to-ground voltage > approx. 0,5 % (=Vlimit).
The parameter Vlimit is adjustable in the menu.

- Control with non-negligible system perturbations

If networks are designed in a very symmetric way the natural neutral-to-ground voltages are very low.
Eventually present system perturbations are not negligible any more.

EFC50-V1.00 Page 13
December 2010 1 General
System perturbations
are variations of the network that have an effect on the neutral-to-ground voltage. Switching operations or damping
variations (e.g. due to weather) are not considered to be system perturbations.

Possible reasons for system perturbations are, for example:

- Variation in symmetry of system voltage due to inexact symmetric voltage control.

- Asymmetric load variation.

Via the series impedance of the lines, the load current influences via the series impedances of the lines the
neutral-to-ground voltage.

By adjusting the inductivity of the ASC and measuring the neutral-to-ground voltage the system’s resonance curve
(resp. locus diagram) can be determined. This way, the calculation of the resonance curve is possible with a few
measurement points only. By knowing the resonance curve the determination of the resonance point is possible.
Furthermore it is possible to consider a certain over- or under-compensation for the final tuning point of the ASC.
For describing the control procedures the following definitions are necessary.

Compensation v
If the capacitive leakage current is not fully compensated by the inductive current of the ASC, this is called under-
compensation (v < 0). If the inductive current is greater than the capacitive leakage current, this is called over-
compensation (v > 0).

Middle position of the coil

The so called middle position of the coil can be set by a parameter in the EFC50 (factory setting: 50 % of the
maximum coil current).
Tuning point
The tuning position is the final adjustment point of the Petersen coil, calculated on the basis of the resonance point
with consideration of an eventual under- or over compensation.

Control with negligible system perturbations (Vo>Vlimit)

Measurement of the neutral-to-ground voltage and coil position results in the following control procedure:

At the end of the pre-set delay time the controller starts the search operation from its actual position towards middle
position of the coil. After approx. 2% of coil adjustment the control procedure is continued towards direction of rising
neutral-to-ground voltage (thus, eventually meaning reverse coil adjustment). After a minimum necessary coil
movement (factory setting: 5%) a first estimation of the network parameters (resonance point Ires, asymmetry k,
damping d) is available.

Since the available measurement data are not exact (measurement tolerances of coil position and neutral-to-
ground voltage), this first result does not exactly represent the final values.

By estimation of the resonance point the tuning point is determined also. Hence, the ASC is adjusted to this point.
The estimation of the resonance point (and hence also of the tuning point) is continuously corrected and improved
during the coil movement.
In order to reach the highest possible tuning accuracy the resonance peak is passed at least once, before the
tuning point is finally reached. (Exception: Depending on the settings at “Vo>Vmax“ the controller can stop the coil
at Vmax without passing the resonance peak. Then the coil position however is not at the final calculated tuning
point.)

If during the coil movement a sudden rise of the neutral-to-ground voltage happens, a new control procedure is
started.

Page 14 EFC50-V1.00
1 General December 2010
Control with non-negligible system perturbations (Vo < Vlimit)

Owing to system perturbations slow variations (in the range of 20 ... 40s) of the neutral-to-ground voltage may
happen. During adjustment of the coil virtual side-resonances may occur.
A voltage maximum is however only accepted as resonance point, if during control procedure one measurement
point before and another measurement after the voltage maximum can be found, both of which have to be in a pre-
set ratio related to the maximum value.

In the following example this ratio is set to 80% (adjustable in the menu).

Selection of control procedure

By means of the parameter Vlimit the relevant control procedure is determined.

If the neutral-to-ground voltage is lower than Vlimit at the beginning of a search operation, the procedure
“Control with non-negligible system perturbations" is used. Hence, disturbing influences caused by system
perturbations are minimized.
If the neutral-to-ground voltage exceeds Vlimit during control procedure, the controller internally changes the used
procedure without interrupting the process.
If the neutral-to-ground voltage is higher than Vlimit at the beginning of a search operation, the procedure "Control
with negligible system perturbations" is used.
In order to have a successful tuning operation the neutral to ground voltage in the resonance point should at least
exceed approximately 0,1% - 0,3% (depending on the net conditions).

1.3.3 Control by current injection

dI
ECI 3 Zu (>>)

dUo 3L 3R C E1
ECI

In the sound network the neutral to ground voltage is caused by the asymmetry 3Zu. An additional injected current
dIECI, flows into the resonance circuit formed by 3L, 3R and C and leads to a change of the neutral to ground
voltage dVo.
Because of the vectorial measurement of voltage and current by the EFC50, the complex zero sequence
impedance Zo of the resonance circuit can be calculated.

Hint
The vectorial measurement requires the availability of the so called reference voltage U12, which serves as a
phase reference fort he measurement of the phases of all other signals.

From this data the active and the reactive part of the fault current (during solid fault) can be calculated.
If the coil position is known (potentiometer), the resonance point of the network can be derived.

If necessary, the controller adjusts the coil to the calculated tuning point. Switching operations during the coil
adjustment are recognized by supervision of the course of neutral to ground voltage.

The control by means of the current injection offers the following advantages:

- The network parameters can be calculated without coil adjustment.

- The calculation therefore is fast.
- The controller also works in symmetric networks with very small neutral to ground voltage. By means of inverse
mode a permanent increase of neutral to ground voltage is possible and therefore a reliable criterion for
necessary tuning operations is available.
- After an eventual coil adjustment the tuning point will be checked once more.

Attention
If the current injection is not available any more, or the calculation delivers an invalid result, the device will
automatically change to a control procedure with coil movement, similar as described under item (1.3.2).

3.2 Operation concept

Operating the EFC50 is done via the standard control panel (display, buttons, scroll wheel) or via terminal program
EFC50Term. Parameter for device programming are within a menu, which is structured into three different user
levels. If desired, the menu can be protected with different passwords (please refer to chapter 7).

· Operation level
Access (standard password 1) to main parameter for correction of service performance are available (see also
chapter 5).

· Commissioning level
Access (standard password 2) to parameter necessary for start-up procedure are available (see chapter 4).

· Expert level
Access (standard password 3) to all parameters relevant for fine tuning of the device are available for the
advanced user. Also the standard passwords can be individually changed on this level. The structure of the
menu levels is fixed and can’t be changed.

Furthermore, due to the adaptive menu control parameters of not released options are not shown in the display.
For example parameter for resistor control are only shown if this option has been released by input of the correct
password. This operation concept ensures maximum clarity for different users.

3.3.2 Scroll wheel

The scroll wheel allows for a simple and comfortable operation of the controller. Turning the wheel moves the
rectangular, black cursor shown in the display. Pressing the wheel activates the function corresponding to the
current cursor position.

Adjustment of contrast
The EFC50 has an automatic contrast adjustment. A manual adjustment by the user is not necessary therefore.

Enter menu
Turning the scroll wheel until the background of the letter x changes to black. After pushing, the controller changes
to the beginning of the menu (password is required, if menu is password protected).

Exit menu
Turning the scroll wheel until the background of the line „Exit menu“ changes to black. After pushing the scroll
wheel the query „Store parameter“ or „Exit without store“ appears. After confirmation the controller continues
operating, if it is switched on.

Parameter programming in the menu

Selection of a parameter is made by turning the scroll wheel. A change is only possible after selection and after
pushing the scroll wheel. Readiness for change is shown by flashing of the black cursor positioned at the actual
setting. Turning of the scroll wheel until display shows the requested setting of the parameter. For programming
predefined words (eg on, off), letters, numbers and some special signs (-) are available. By pressing the scroll
wheel again the user departs from the programming mode.
Change of parameter is confirmed by symbol ¢ or rejected by symbol x.
All performed changes are stored only if the query „Store parameter“ (prior to exit menu) is confirmed.
All parameter settings remain safely stored if the power supply fails.

3.3.3 Local key – remote control

By means of this key all remote control commands are blocked in the manual mode (CONTROLLER OFF). This
status (local) is indicated by a green LED.

3.3.4 CONTR – key

By pushing the CONTR – key the device changes between manual and automatic mode.

3.3.5 ESC – key

This key can be used for jumping back one step in the menu or to quit changes without storing.

4 Start-up
4.1 Necessary preparations
4.1.1 Safety

Warning

Beside the general safety hints (see chapter 1) the following hints have to be considered:

- Personnel working at the ASC must not be endangered by simultaneous coil adjustment via the EFC50
controller
- Measuring circuit of neutral-to-ground voltage may rise to 110 V AC in the case of an earthfault.
- If messages from the EFC50 are generated for test purposes, control room staff should be informed prior
(otherwise messages might be further transmitted, e.g. earthfault message).
- Company regulations (e.g. authorization for switching operations, safety) are to be followed.

4.1.2 Mechanical mounting

Dimensions of the device and outline for panel cut-out are in chapter 2.

Hint

- Re-check mechanical mounting of the device. Pay special attention in keeping required distances for cooling of
the device.
- Avoid any cutting operation near the device. Never put small parts on top of the device, they could enter
unnoticed.
- Replacement of fuses is done at the back of the device. Hence, swing frame installation resp. possibility for rear
access is recommended. If fixed installation in wall-cabinet is used, appropriate length of wiring (for necessary
pulling out of the device) has to be considered.

4.1.3 Electrical connection

Connection diagrams for standard configurations are shown in chapter 2.
-Measuring and control circuits have to be protected according to local standards.
- Arrange a clear and simple way of wiring.
- Capacitive or inductive interference of neighborhood cables may cause unintentional operation of digital inputs.
- The permissible signal limits for in- and outputs (see chapter 2) must not be exceeded.
- Use of shielded cables for measurement of neutral-to-ground voltage is recommended.
- Re-check wiring prior to energizing the device, e.g.:
- Value/polarity of neutral-to-ground voltage
- Value/polarity of auxiliary voltages
- Function of movement commands to the ASC
- Function of end switches
- Connection of potentiometer resp. angle transmitter
- Check the rotating field of the motor drive unit of the coil according to correct moving direction.

4.2 Start-up instruction
First time users of this device are recommended to read chapter 3 to become familiar with this operation.
Advanced users may choose the faster procedure by means of EFCTerm (offline programming and up-loading a
prepared start-up file).
Switch on the device by means of main switch (power supply). Wait until the device finishes booting, then open the
menu.

Enter the standard password (“2“) for start-up level and move into the
submenu “System configuration”

4.2.1 Menu System configuration

4.2.1.1 Time and Date

The device is not equipped with a DCF-receiver, hence an eventual change for summer time has to be done
manually. A back-up capacitor keeps time and date for a few days if the device is switched off.

4.2.1.2 Language
English or German is available

Page 36 EFC50-V1.00
44 Start-up December 2010
4.2.1.3 EFC50Term Parameter

COM1
Situated on the front of the device, recommended for connection of a PC
or modem. The COM1 is always active at 115 kBd.

COM2
Situated on the back of the device, recommended for connection of a
modem or Scada system.

Hint
The COM2 at the back and the COM1 at the front side cannot be used for EFC50Term at the same time. Switch off
an eventually connected modem at the back COM2, if you want to connect the PC at front COM1. Settings of
controller and of EFC50Term must match. If different addresses are used, multiple devices can be addressed by
means of one modem only combined with an interface distribution box (available on request).

Baud rate
By the use of a modem the baud rate of 9.600 bd is recommended, with direct connection higher baud rates are
possible.

4.2.2 Menu Basic preselection

If the controller is installed according to the standard connection diagram (see chapter 2.9), programming has to be
checked only. Most likely, changes are not necessary since the controller left the factory already with proper
programming (standard in-/output configuration). Check resp. change the following parameter:

Device and station name: these names are stored together with the
parameter and data files and allow an easy identification therefore. The
names are also displayed at the remote display at EFCterm connection
and allow to check that the connection is really established with the
correct device.

4.2.2.1 analog Inputs

In order to measure amount and phase, it is necessary to have a reference voltage, synchronous with the network.
Using the phase-phase voltage between L1 and L2 the reference angle for correction is 30°, if all measured angles
shall be referred to L1.
The reference voltage is not necessary without ECI and without the option “vectorial trigger”
The device is designed for maximum 3 busbars. Normally the input for Vo1 is used for connection of the neutral to
ground voltage.

EFC50-V1.00 Page 37
December 2010 4 Start-up
The adjusted ratio for inputs, which are not used (e.g. Vo2, Vo3) , does not affect the control behavior. We however
recommend to use the same values, as adjusted for the used inputs,
corresponding to the voltage level of the network.

Vo1, Vo2, Vo3

Above example is valid for a network with 20kV (=set value for V12). The nominal voltage of a Petersen coil in a
20kV network usually is 20/square root(3) = 11.55 kV. Check the rating plate at the coil.

Hint
If your ASC is designed for a higher voltage level than actually used, the values have to be recalculated in order
to get a correct % - display of the voltages.

Example:
A coil is designed for 20 kV system voltage and equipped with a measurement winding from 11.55 kV to 100 V.
If the coil is used in a 10 kV system, the ratio of 5.77 kV to 50 V has to be programmed.

ECI1, ECI2, ECI3

If the tuning works with current injection, the total transformer ratio of the injected current (primary) to the
measured current (secondary) must be considered.

The current is injected into the network’s starpoint via the power auxiliary winding of the coil. The primary
injected current is calculated with the following data:
- ratio of the power auxiliary winding (PAW)
- ratio of the current transformer inside the ECI, (10/1A; I-Transf. sec. = 1A

Example
A coil designed for 20 kV system voltage and a transformer ratio of 11.55kV/500V for the PAW gives following
results:
I-primary = 10/(11550/500) = 0.43

Attention
Eventually it is necessary to turn the polarity of the injected current. This can be done by input of a (-) in front of
the secondary value. (e.g. -1).
If the (-) is entered in front of the primary value it is reset to 0. Therefore it is not allowed there.

Page 38 EFC50-V1.00
44 Start-up December 2010
Usual secondary values are 100V (in some countries 110V) for voltages and 1A (5A) for current inputs.

The assignment of the signals to measuring inputs is done in the menu “AI channel assignment”. Beside the
available physical inputs (X…) there is also the possibility to assign the measured value channels A01 … A08,
which can be defined inside the PLC file.

EFC50-V1.00 Page 39
December 2010 4 Start-up
4.2.2.2 Controller works with

The selection „ASC1/BB1/ECI1“ means, that the controller tunes with Petersen coil 1 and the network parameters
are calculated with Vo1 and IECI1 (factory settings). At presence of a second ( or third) ASC it is possible, for better
distinction between the voltages to use the voltages Vo2 (or Vo3) at a second (or third) EFC50.
At use of Vo2 for example the second current injection ECI2 and the relevant in- and output functions for ECI2 must
be used !

4.2.2.3 trafo impedance (only for control with ECI)

These parameters allow a voltage / current correction if the zero sequence impedance of the neutral transformer
cannot be neglected. Normally this impedance should be small compared with the impedance of the coil.
We recommend not to use these parameters without feedback of Trench, if there are any doubts concerning too
high impedance of the coil’s transformer.

4.2.2.4 coil

The coil range (Imin, Imax) of the coil must be entered.

Hint
If your ASC is designed for a higher voltage level than actually used, the values have to be recalculated in order
to get a correct coil position in [A].

Example:
If a coil for 20kV nominal voltage and a nominal range of 15- 150A, a recalculated range of 7,5 – 75A must be
entered if the coil is used in a 10kV network.

Page 40 EFC50-V1.00
44 Start-up December 2010
Digital In- and outputs:

Digital in- and outputs are assigned to in- and output functions inside the PLC – file. The list of available functions
can be found at the end of chapter 7.

The necessary in- and outputs for the coil are prepared in the standard (factory) setting, in correspondence to the
standard connection diagram (see chapter 2). More factory settings can be found in the program EFC50Param.

Hint

If in- and outputs are used differently from the standard settings, the assignment inside the PLC file must be
changed. We recommend to change this offline with the help of the program EFC50Param.
(see chapter 8).

Leave the menu at „Exit Menü“ and store the parameters. Adjust the controller to „CONTROLLER OFF“ and adjust
the coil by means of the <> buttons a little bit into both directions..

You should hear the closing of the relevant relay . The value of Ipos should change a little bit.
The coil calibration requires that the motor commands work, the coil moves, the potentiometer works and the end
switches must operate.

Page 42 EFC50-V1.00
44 Start-up December 2010
coil calibration
Start the calibration. This procedure adjusts the coil over the whole range and lasts for some minutes. It is not
necessary that the coil is already connected to the medium voltage network during that procedure.

After successful calibration a few calculated data of potentiometer and coil are displayed.

In case that the controller generates an error signal after a certain time, the reasons with highest probability and
solutions are mentioned under chapter 6.

Push the scroll wheel after the calibration and confirm “Store” after “Exit menu”. Then you adjust the coil manually
over the whole range and compare the coil position in the display with the indication at the coil. If there are
deviations bigger than 2% of the entire range, you should enter the “coil characteristics” (linearization table).

Coil characteristics:

Method 1:
The values for coil position I [A] and the potentiometer values Pot [A, Ohm]
(e.g. for a 1 kOhm potentiometer from the routine test report of the coil) can be
entered directly.

If the test report is not available the potentiometer values can be measured by adjusting the ASC from graduation
mark to graduation mark and measuring the corresponding resistance.

EFC50-V1.00 Page 43
December 2010 4 Start-up
Method 2:
After calibration the following values are shown on ASC position indication (IASC) resp. on controller display
(ICONTROLLER):

IASC [A] ICONTROLLER [A]

15 15
60 55
90 82
120 110
150 150

At the menu coil characteristics the values of ASC position indication (IASC) can
be entered into the column „I“ and the values of controller display
(ICONTROLLER) into the column „Pot“. After storing and exit of the menu, the
display of controller matches with ASC position indication.

4.2.3 Analogue output configuration

The device is equipped with three programmable 0 - 20 mA (DC) outputs for neutral-to-ground voltage and coil
position. External instruments or remote control can be connected.
The configuration of these outputs (linear, logarithmic or break) is available inside the menu. The assignment to the
function (voltage, current, position, etc.) is done inside the PLC file.

Three possibilities for assignment are available.

With linear characteristic Vo_min [%] to Vo_max [%] is linear represented by Vo_min
[mA] to Vo_max [mA]

With break characteristic the two ranges Vo_min [%] to Vo_break [%] resp. Vo_break
[%] to Vo_max [%] are represented by the corresponding [mA] ranges.

Hint

Necessary conditions:
Vo_min [%] < Vo_break [%] < Vo_max [%] and Vo_min [mA] < Vo_break [mA] < Vo_max [mA]

With logarithmic characteristic the range from log (Vo_min [%] ) to log (Vo_max
[%] ) is represented by the range Vo_min [mA] to Vo_max [mA].

Hint

Necessary conditions:
Vo_min [%] must be > 0 !

4.2.3.1 Coil position Ipos

Menu parameter for AOFUNC_1 :

PLC definition: AO[AO01]=AOFUNC_1(AI[IPOS_P])

For the coil position usually a linear characteristic is chosen. If a fix coil is used and activated, the current-sum of fix
coil and Petersen coil is displayed. The %-value in the display (if %-display activated) is referred to the max. sum
of Imax + Ipos as well.
At the mA - output only the Petersen coil is considered, independently from the state of the fix coil.

4.2.3.2 Neutral to ground voltage

For the neutral to ground voltage very often a logarithmic or break characteristic could be senseful.

Menu parameter for AOFUNC_2:

PLC definition: AO[AO01]= AO[AO02]=AOFUNC_2(AI[U01_P])

In this example the range of 0 – 10% Vo is projected to 0 – 10mA, the range
of 10% - 100% is ranged to 10 – 20mA.

4.3 Current injection
This description is only relevant if you use the EFC50 with current injection. Therefore the control with ECI must be
activated, as well as the available current injection devices.

Hint
The adjustment „with ECI“ or „without ECI“ also influences the menu structure. In connection with these settings
some parameters become without sense and are therefore automatically removed from the menu.

For the current injection important are following functions, which should be tested before the first tuning operation:

a.) Measurement of the injected current

b.) Feedback of current injection (digital input)
c.) Commands to activate the current injection

It is required that the necessary circuits are wired and activated. The fuse of the power auxiliary wiring must be in
place and the current injection device (ECI) supplied and switched on.

a.) Activate the current injection device. The ECI now injects a current into the power auxiliary winding.

The injected current is recalculated and displayed at primary values. (e.g. Ieci = 0.30A / 150°). Depending on
system voltage and type of ECI thefollowing values are expected:

ECI – type 10 kV network 20kV network 60kV network

3 HE (approx. 2,3 A sec.) 0.2 A 0.1 A Not recommended
Power (approx. 6.9A sec.) 0.6 A 0.3 A 0.1 A

Page 46 EFC50-V1.00
44 Start-up December 2010
b.) If the message 1+ ECI appears on the display during this test also he feedback of the current injection works.

Hint

The feedback of the ECI can be cancelled, if the input function IF[MIF_ECI_POS_1]is directly assigned to the
command output function OF[ECI_POS_1].
If more devices have access to the same current injection device the feedback should be wired anyway.

c.) Put the current injection back to normal condition. Activate the Forced Trigger with the letters „FT“.

At the display appears ECI..1+ , which shows that the controller send a switch on
command to the current injection.

If the ECI is on, then also the injected current is displayed.

If the coil is already connected to the network, the network parameter are
calculated as well. The value for Ro must be positive.
(At negative Ro the polarty of either Vo or Ieci must be turned.)

4.4 First check of control

The ASC should be connected with the network to be compensated. Prior, adjust the coil to the expected tuning
position. Set the controller to automatic mode.

According to the actual network condition the following scenarios are possible:

Controller finds tuning position without any problems

Adjust the coil a couple of times manually towards smaller resp. higher current
and let the controller tune. If possible, change the network configuration and test
the controller with different tuning positions. Adjust the main control parameter
(see chapter 5) according to your requirements.

Controller does not find any tuning position

A couple of reasons are possible, for details see chapter 6. If the problems can not be solved with the help of these
instructions, please contact Trench Austria.

4.5 Enable software options
The software options will be enabled by typing in the the correct passwords (please refer to delivered do-cuments
resp. back side of the controller).

If the software option is enabled, the parameters are available in the menu (Commissioning level;. Expert level).

If the password has been entered correctly, the code will be shown as “1“.

Hint

Please note, that the serial number of the controller must be entered correctly for offline parameter set-tings with
EFC20iParam. Otherwise the enabled options will be disabled by the controller.

4.6 Final activities

After programming the controller down-load the set parameter (with EFC20iTerm) to your PC and store the file in a
suitable manner.

Note date and time of commissioning, device and order data and anomalies which eventually occurred. You can
use the attached commissioning report for this purpose.

5.1 Main parameter
For the service level the following menu items can be reached by means of the standard password („1“).

5.1.1 Controller configuration

The necessary parameter are summarized in the submenu „Controller configuration“.

Compensation (Detuning)

This parameter determines the degree of detuning at the tuning point (adjustable in % or A).
Under-compensation can be set by input of „-“ prior to the value. The „%“ value is related to coil position in the
resonance point. The presence of a eventual fix-coil is considered only if the relevant menu setting is
programmed (see chapter 7).

Tuning condition (only without ECI)

By means of this parameter it can be selected the control of detuning degree or of voltage level. At control of
detuning degree („compensation Iv“) the tuning point is determined by the resonance point Ires and the desired
compensation degree (Iv).
If the control operation is restricted by Vmax (or Vmax2), then at control of voltage („voltage V max“) the tuning
point is selected so that the adjusted neutral to ground voltage Vmax is reached. The compensation degree
(over -compensation Iv>0, under-compensation Iv<0) will be considered if possible. If the controller cannot reach
the right side of the resonance curve because of Vmax (or Vmax2), then a compensation warning will be
generated.

5.1.1.1 Control behavior

EFC50-V1.00 Page 51
December 2010 5 Service
Vo – trigger level
The neutral-to-ground voltage is stored as reference after each control procedure. A new control procedure is
started, if the actual neutral-to-ground voltage Vo exceeds the trigger threshold (in % of the reference value) for
longer time than the pre-set trigger delay time.

Trigger delay time

A new control procedure is started only if the neutral-to-ground voltage exceeds the tolerance range longer than
this time. In order to avoid unnecessary control operations (due to fluctuating neutral-to-ground voltage) this
time should not be set too short. Usual values range between 0.5 minutes and approx. 2 minutes.

Vearth
In case of an earthfault the controller blocks the coil movement. Any simultaneous control process is stopped
immediately. If this happens during control procedure or if the earthfault lasts longer than the programmed time
for transient earth faults, a forced trigger is released after the earthfault vanishes. Hence, the controller performs
a control operation in any case.

Time for transient earth faults

Earth faults (Vo > Vearth) lasting less than the programmed time are interpreted as transient earth faults. The
number of these events is counted (see chapter 5 - counter).

Signal delay
Delay time of the output function OF[EARTHFAULT] for earthfault message.

Threshold Zu

After the end of an automatic tuning operation the controller calculates the asymmetry impedance of the network. If
the value falls below the adjusted threshold (e.g. during a high resistive fault) the output function OF[ASYMMETRY]
(“asymmetry trip“) will be set, which can be assigned to a digital output. A necessary requirement is, that the
controller operates in automatic mode and that automatic tuning is possible (Vo < Vearth).

5.2 Evaluations
5.2.1 Measurement buffer

The controller is equipped with a ring buffer for 1000 measurement points. The measurement points are recorded
according to a settable time interval (starting with 1 s) and at special events (e.g. start of earthfault). Following data
are recorded:
- Date
- Time
- Neutral-to-ground voltage Vo
- Coil position Ipos
- Network parameter (Ires, k, v, d)
- Status information (automatic on/off and so on)
- In- and output functions
The measurement buffer is loaded and evaluated by means of the program EFC50Term (see chapter 8) on a
PC/laptop.

Archive:
The data buffer is only stored in the RAM and will be overwritten, in case it becomes full. However before the
contents of the buffer is written to a permanent memory (archive 0 -9). The archives are written in a cyclic manner
as well, it means, if all archives are full, the oldest one will be overwritten.
Also the archive files can be loaded with the program EFC50Term (see chapter 8) onto the PC/Laptop and
evaluated there.

5.2.2 Show statistics

By selection of „S“ in automatic or manual mode the counters can be displayed and by turning the scroll wheel the
following modes for display can be selected. The EFC50Term provides the possibility to download these data as
text file.

All, but the counter for the operating time total, can be reset to zero (within commissioning level at “basic
preselection“ or expert level at system configuration).

EFC50-V1.00 Page 53

5.3 Show important informations
By selection of „I“ in automatic or manual mode and turning the scroll wheel the following informations can be
displayed:

- Fault informations

The controller has released an adjustment command to the coil. However, no

movement within the preset time (parameter timeout coil) was reported back.

The screen “fault informations” opens automatically at appearance of an error

and can be quitted by turning the scroll wheel or pushing the ESC-key.

- Event list

In the event list you can find:

- Tuning operations (Ipos, Ires, Uo, Id)
- Tuned signal coming/going
- Fault informations
- Earthfault begin and end (Vo>Vearth)

Further events can be recorded via PLC-flags (boolic variables)

Input functions Output functions

The list of available in- and output functions can be found in chapter 8.

CONTROLLER ON
The controller reacts on Vo voltage changes in the network and adjusts the coil onto the correct tuning point
after switching operations.

(blocked)
The controller is blocked by the input function “controller block“ and will therefore not perform any tuning
operation. The message is also visible in manual mode. When the input function is reset, the controller will start
a new tuning operation, if it was in automatic mode before.

_LS
Indication at activated option „Control by external circuit breaker“

CONTROLLER OFF
The controller performs no automatic coil adjustments. A manual adjustment of the coil is possible by operation
e.g. at the controller.

Tuned
The controller successfully finished the control procedure.

Tuned, not comp.

The controller finished the tuning procedure. The calculated tuning point is situated outside the coil tuning range.
The coil is moved into an end position.

Trigger + (123)
The neutral-to-ground voltage has exceeded the upper trigger threshold. The remaining time until start of the
control procedure is shown in brackets.

Trigger - (123)
The neutral-to-ground voltage has exceeded the lower trigger threshold. The remaining time until start of the
control procedure is shown in brackets.

Forced trigger (10)

A new search procedure was forced. The time until start of the search operation is indicated in brackets.

Switching operation (10)

During the control procedure a switching operation was recognized. Eventually, the sensitivity for the recognition
of switching operations during search procedure resp. the sensitivity for checking in the tuning point has to be
adjusted (see chapter 7). The time until a new start of the search operation is indicated in brackets.

Search for estimation (Vo > Vlimit)
The search procedure was started towards direction of „coil middle position“. The message is shown during the
„minimum coil adjustment“. At the end of this „minimum coil adjustment“ the estimated values are accepted.

Search of the target (Vo > Vlimit)

The calculated tuning point is directly adjusted. During coil movement the resonance point and the tuning point
are continuously verified and corrected. In order to reach the highest possible accuracy the resonance peak is
passed at least once, before the tuning point is finally reached.

Search 1 (Vo < Vlimit)

Coil adjustment of 2 % for determination of the gradient of the resonance curve.

Search 2 (Vo < Vlimit)

According to the set resonance-voltage ratio a point on the other side of the resonance maximum is searched.

Search 3 (Vo < Vlimit)

The search direction is changed, if no maximum was found according the resonance-voltage ratio. Possible
reasons are, e.g.: If the search procedure was started in the vicinity of the end switch and if the end switch was
reached without determination of valid values for the resonance point.

Search 4 (Vo < Vlimit)

The calculated tuning point is within the just searched coil tuning range. The ASC is positioned to this calculated
tuning point.

Search 5 (Vo < Vlimit)

During the search towards coil middle position Vmin was not exceeded but the end switch was reached. During
search 5 the entire coil tuning
range is searched for a neutral-to-ground voltage higher than Vmin.

Search 6 (Vo < Vlimit)

The second end switch was reached without neutral-to-ground voltage exceeding Vmin within the entire tuning
range.

Search coil middle position

Since no neutral-to-ground voltage higher than Vmin was found within the entire tuning range the coil is
adjusted to the programmed „pre-set coil middle position“.

Positioning
- The controller adjusts the coil to the predefined middle position after Vo<Vmin.
- The controller adjusts the coil onto the previously determined resonance point at activated option „Readjustment
to exact compensation“.
- At activated option “external circuit breaker“ the controller adjusts the coil to the predefined position.

(Vmin)(15')
The coil is adjusted to the „pre-set coil middle position“. At the end of the set delay time (see chapter 7) the
„Vmin“ message is released (if a new control procedure is not started within the set time). The remaining time
(in minutes) until release of the relay message is shown in brackets.

(Vmin) trigger + (123)

The upper trigger threshold was exceeded during waiting position Vmin. The remaining time (in seconds) until
start of the search procedure is shown in brackets.

(Vmin) Trigger - (123)

The lower trigger threshold was exceeded during waiting position Vmin. The remaining time (in seconds) until
start of the search procedure is shown in brackets.

(Vmax)
The neutral-to-ground voltage has exceeded the threshold Vmax.

The neutral-to-ground voltage has exceeded the lower trigger threshold. The remaining time (in seconds) until
start of the search procedure is shown in brackets.

(Vmax) Forced trigger (10)

A search operation was manually started by change from manual to automatic mode. The time until start of the
search operation is indicated in brackets.

(Vmax) Back control 1

The neutral-to-ground voltage has exceeded the threshold of Vmax + 10 %. A re-adjustment to Vmax is
performed.

(Vmax) Back control 2

During the readjustment the voltage Vo remained below Vmax. The adjustment is continued until a new search
operation is started.

(Vmax) End switch

A re-adjustment to Vmax is not possible because the end switch was reached prior.

Transient earthfault
The neutral-to-ground voltage has exceeded the threshold for recognition of earthfaults. However, the time for a
permanent earthfault was not exceeded yet.

(Earthfault)
The neutral-to-ground voltage has exceeded the voltage threshold for recognition of earthfaults. The earthfault
is present at least for the transient earthfault time.

R on, R off
The switch condition of the resistor is indicated. (Option „resistor control“, see chapter 9)

R blocked
The reconnection of the resistor is blocked due to an exceeded temperature threshold (controller uses an
internal temperature model) or an external block via digital input. (Option „resistor control“, see chapter 9)

Fix on, fix off

The tuning range of the coil is not sufficient any more, hence the controller has connected the external fix coil
(Option „fix coil control“, see chapter 9).

ASC on/off
The controller adjusts the coil on the valid tuning point. While passing the resonance peak the ASC will be
disconnected from the network. (Option „Automatic switch for Vo>Vmax“, see chapter 9)

Pos. R
The controller adjusts the coil on the valid tuning point. While passing the resonance peak the additional resistor
is connected. (Option „Automatic switch for Vo>Vmax“, see chapter 9)

6.1.2.1. Errors

An error has occurred. The reason is indicated in the following line. In addition a malfunction is signalized.

(Coil movement)
The controller has released an adjustment command to the coil. However, no movement (> 0,1 %) within the
pre-set time or a movement into the wrong direction was reported back.

(Motor operation time)

The controller has continuously adjusted the coil. The set motor operation time was exceeded (see chapter
6).

(DSP Error)
There is a conflict at the internal data communication.

(Set time)
The controller has no valid time, due to an empty buffer capacitor for the integrated circuit of the internal
clock.

The green LED indicates the „Local“ – state of the controller. In this state commands from outside (via digital
input or Scada) are blocked. Switching to Local-mode is only possible, if the controller is OFF (CONTROLLER
OFF).

CONTR
The green LED indicates that the controller is ON (CONTROLLER ON = Automatic mode)

6.3 Malfunctions
6.3.1 Problems during start-up
Reloading of the factory setting
The program “EFC50Param” contains factory settings (menu: “file / factory settings”), which can be used for the
EFC50. It must be observed that these files do not contain any released software options. Therefore eventual
options need to be activated again. We recommend to keep the required option codes somewhere near to the
device.

Display remains dark after switching on of the device

Check the used power supply if it fits to the stated technical data (see chapter 2). The start up of the device
takes about 1 minute.

The controller does not measure any voltage

Nothing or only a very small voltage is displayed. Check which voltage actually is measurable at the input
terminals of the device. At symmetric networks and / or with detuning the neutral-to-ground voltage can be very
small. After starting the automatic mode the controller tries to find a neutral-to-ground voltage > Vmin within the
entire tuning range of the coil. If this voltage can not be found, the coil is positioned to the predefined „coil
middle position“. If the display is missing (but voltage is present) first check the set voltage transformer ratio. If
these settings are correct, please get in contact with Trench Austria for further advise.

The analogue output delivers none or too less current.

Check in the menu the assignment of the output characteristic, especially if a break characteristic was selected
for the neutral-to-ground voltage. In the menu „Check in/ outputs->AO characteristics“ it is possible to define
must values. If the must values can not be achieved, the value of the burden on this output should be checked
(< 800 Ohm).

Example:

If this test is successful, check the assignment inside the PLC-file. There the analogue output channel must be
assigned to a float value in the range of 0 – 100. For example the factory setting for the coil position is:
AO[AO01]=AOFUNC_1(AI[IPOS_P]) coil position in the range between 0 and 100%

EFC50-V1.00 Page 61
December 2010 6 Messages / Malfunctions
Attention
If there are multiple assignments for the same channel inside the PLC-file, only the command, which is the last in
the text file will be executed.

The status of binary inputs does not fulfil the expectations

By means of the menu „Check in/outputs->“ the status of all binary inputs can be checked.

a.) The input is ON, but should be OFF. Check the voltage that is applied between the input contact and the
corresponding common. Since the binary inputs are very high resistive, coupling (inductive or capacitive) of
voltages from neighbouring wires may happen.
If such coupling exists, a solution is sometimes to change to DC-control voltages or to install intermediate
(mechanical) relays, because their input resistance normally is a little bit lower.

b.) The input is OFF, but should be ON. Check if the required signal voltage is applied to the terminals (min. 48V
AC/DC). This voltage must be supplied externally (a make contact only is not sufficient!). If the input is not
operated at all, it is most likely defective. Since the binary inputs are not equipped with changeable fuses,
contact Trench Austria.

Page 62 EFC50-V1.00
6 Messages / Malfunctions December 2010
c.) The status of a binary input function does not fulfill the expectations. First check if the corresponding physical
input is correctly set. Check in the menu „Check IF“, if the input function really shows a different value than
expected.

If this is the case, check the assignment of the input function to the physical input. Correct eventual errors.
Observe, that the assignment becomes only active after the parameters are stored.

Example for upper end switch: IF[MIF_END_I_MAX] =DI[D0003]; X9/4,E3.2

A digital output does not operate as expected

The device offers the possibility to set each relay individually via the menu „Check relay“. By means of this
menu check the wiring, the presence of the control voltage and if the output relay inside the controller really
switches (ED = Edit).

If the relay is functioning properly, check the assignment of the output function to the output relay. Correct
eventual errors. Note, the assignment is only active if the parameters are stored. The assignment of the output
functions can be tested by setting the corresponding output function in the menu „Check output functions“.

Problems with measuring the coil position

The measurement of the coil position can be performed by a potentiometer or by a configurable mA - input
(angle transmitter). The controller evaluates the position of the potentiometer by applying a voltage (approx. 5 V
DC) to the potentiometer (between „+Pot“ and „-Pot“) and measuring the voltage on the sliding contact (between
the terminals „sPot“ and „-Pot“). The most common error during start up is the unintentional exchange of
terminals.

EFC50-V1.00 Page 63
December 2010 6 Messages / Malfunctions
Exchange of „-Pot“ and „+Pot“
The indicated position changes into the wrong direction.

Exchange of „sliding contact“ and „+Pot“

This error is indicated by a strong non-linearity in the assignment of the potentiometer position and the voltage
on the exchanged sliding contact.

Wrong position of the range selector

Check if the selector switch for setting the proper range of the angle transmitter is in the correct position.
If the potentiometer is used, the top of the pointer has to point to 0!
If an angle transmitter (mA) is used, the current setting (for input ranges and burden resistances see chapter 2) is
converted into a measurement voltage (converted in the same way as with measurement via potentiometer). Hence,
check if the used mA-transmitter is able to cover the voltage drop on the burden resistance. Furthermore, the angle
transmitter should convert the coil position directly (without any steps and additional delay) into mA.

Problems with control

Recognition of switching operations during control procedure

For recognizing switching operations during the control procedure, the actual measured voltage is continuously
compared with the previous estimated resonance curve during the coil movement. A tolerance band,
(„Sensitivity during search operation“ see expert level chapter 7) which is placed around the estimated
resonance curve and in which the actual neutral-to-ground voltage has to stay, serves as the criteria.
Owing to errors at the measurement of the neutral-to-ground voltage (natural fluctuations, steep resonance
curve) and of the coil position (mechanical tolerance) it is possible that the controller recognizes virtual switching
operations.
In this case the search procedure is started again and the controller may need longer time for reaching a valid
tuning point (if not already the limitation for the maximum allowed motor operation time sets the controller into
malfunction state). Hence, the size of the used tolerance band has to be increased.

A quick solution is to double the last value; means, if there is a problem with the standard setting of 15%, then
the next trial can be done with 30% and so on, until there are no more switching operations recognized. The
maximum value is 200%.
Important is that the resonance point, which is found at several repeated trials is more or less always the same,
of course after the presumption that the network size has not really changed.

In case of Vo>Vlimit the neutral to ground voltage is checked, after the tuning point is reached. The tolerated
voltage range is a multiple of the trigger threshold.
At „Sensitivity tuning check“ = 2 for example, the difference between expected Vo (which results from the
calculated network parameter k,v,d) and the actual Vo-voltage must be smaller than the double trigger threshold,
so that the tuning point will be accepted.
If the problem „Recognition of switching operations“ only appears after the final approach to the tuning point,
then the parameter „ Sensitivity tuning check“ should be increased in a similar way as described above. The
maximum value is 10.

Fluctuating Vo during tuning procedure
Fluctuations of the neutral-to-ground voltage during the tuning procedure may be recognized as switching
operations. Therefore a wrong resonance point could be determined, if the resonance curve shows „side
resonances“ due to such voltage fluctuations.
Hence, if such fluctuations of the neutral-to-ground voltage are present, the parameter „Vlimit“ should be set
higher than the actual neutral-to-ground voltage. This forces the controller to find voltage values before and
after the resonance peak, which are in an adjustable ratio smaller than the resonance voltage. (e.g. 80%, also
see chapter 1).

Fluctuating Vo during trigger procedure

If the controller has once found a tuning point, fluctuations in the neutral-to-ground voltage exceeding the trigger
threshold lead to a new trigger procedure. If the voltage returns back below the trigger threshold within the
trigger delay time, only the counter for the trigger events is increased by one. If the trigger delay time is too low,
a lot of unnecessary tuning procedures may happen.
Hence, the trigger delay time should not be set too low (recommendation: between 0.5 and 2 min).
Furthermore, the time constant for the Vo filter should be increased in order to smooth short-time fluctuations of
the neutral-to-ground voltage.

Vlimit: trigger delay: Time constant of the filter:

Fluctuating Vo during the run of the day
In some networks the neutral-to-ground voltage fluctuates very slowly during the run of the day. These slow
fluctuations can not be suppressed by means of the trigger delay and of the measurement filter. However, the
situation is improved by „Follow-up of the neutral-to-ground voltage“ where the actual neutral-to-ground voltage is
taken as a reference value at regular time intervals (e.g. every 60 min). Lower values than 5 min are not settable.

Operation:
After the end of a tuning operation the controller stores the actual neutral to ground voltage. The adjusted trigger
threshold (in %) is related to that stored voltage.
If the stored voltage follows eventual slow changes of the neutral to ground voltage in your network, then
unnecessary tuning operations will be avoided.

Measurement of neutral to ground voltage and injection current

reference angle V12 [°]

the angle between reference voltage and phase voltage L1 should be entered. If the reference voltage is taken from
the phase-phase voltage L1 - L2, the angle is 30°. The angle is important only for evaluation it has no functional
influence.

AI primary
Primary nominal voltages V12, Vo1, Vo2, Vo3 and nominal currents Ieci1, Ieci2, Ieci3

AI secondary
Secondary nominal voltages V12, Vo1, Vo2, Vo3 and nominal currents Ieci1, Ieci2, Ieci3

It is possible to make assignments to analogue inputs (X10 respectively X14) but also to make no assignment (for
signals , not used) or to use virtual inputs AIE, which can be defined inside the PLC-file.

Controller works with:

- ASC1/BB1/ECI1: the calculation is done with Vo1 and Ieci1

7 Parameters December 2010
7.2.1 coil

Coil: Imin [A]

Lower end position of the tuning range.

Coil: Imax [A]

Upper end position of the tuning range.

Timeout coil [s]

Maximum duration from adjustment command to change of position. If there is no movement within this time a
“motion” error is generated.

7.2.1.1 Petersen coil

Coil calibration
Procedure, which automatically calculates the operating characteristic after setting the above mentioned parameter.
Is available for the controller only after storing the configuration data.

Coil characteristics
Programming of interpolating points for the operating characteristic which was calculated by the automatic routine.

Motor time limit [min]

A counter adds up the adjustment times of the coil and subtracts the times without motion. When exceeding the set
threshold a malfunction signal is generated.

7.2.1.2 Stepped coil

The coil can be adjusted with pulses. With a certain sequence of pulses and pause times the coil can also be
adjusted by several steps within one adjustment.

Stepped coil interface

Depending on the feedback of the coil position the following interface types are available:
-serial type 1: the feedback of coil adjustment is given by the input function „MIF_STC_READY“.
-serial type 2: the feedback is recognized by the change of potentiometer position or mA - input. There is no
additional feedback of the stepped coil.

Coil calibration
the coil is always adjusted only by one step. After the adjusted delay time [ms] the new potentiometer value in [%] is
recorded in the coil characteristic. The maximum number of steps is 64.

Coil characteristics
The individual steps are recorded into the characteristics during the coil calibration. If required the measured coil
position / resistance of potentiometer / mA-value can be corrected here.

Time definitions

Pulse time [ms] Pulse time for change by one step

Delay time [ms] Pause between two one step-adjustments

Delay time [0.1s] This delay is used only during coil calibration. After the adjustment of the next step the
controller waits fort he adjusted time until it records the potentiometer value into the coil
characteristics.

Minimum change
of posit. [%] A change of the coil position is only recognized if the coil position changes at least the
adjusted percentage.

7.2.1.3 current injection devices (only with ECI)
ECI1 (ECI2, ECI3) installed
Activation of available current injection devices. If the control works with ASC1 and ECI1 (ASC2 and ECI2, ASC3
and ECI3) but ECI1 (ECI2, ECI3) is adjusted to “NO”, the control will work in redundancy mode.

7.3 Controller configuration

Compensation [%,A]
Setting of a defined difference between tuning point and resonance point. The input of „-“ determines under-
compensation, without sign over- compensation is set.

Tuning condition (only without ECI)

This parameter switches between voltage tuning and compensation tuning. At compensation tuning
(“compensation Iv“) the tuning point is defined by the resonance point and the adjusted compensation parameter in
% or A.
At voltage tuning, if the tuning is restricted by Vmax (or Vmax2), the tuning position is chosen at Vmax . The
position (left or right of the resonance peak) is considered. (right side: overcompensation Iv>0, left side: under-
compensation Iv<0). If the desired side at the resonance curve cannot be reached a compensation warning (output
function: warning compensation) is generated.

7.3.1 Fixed coil

Activate fixed coil

The rated current of the fixed-value coil will be considered, if the input function switch condition fix coil FIX_IS_ON
is set. This consideration only makes a functional difference, when the compensation is set in %.

Fix coil [A]

Rated current of the fixed-value coil

7.3.2 Controller behaviour

Vo-trigger level [%]

The controller recognises a change in the network configuration by a voltage variation that exceeds the trigger
threshold and lasts at least longer than the trigger delay. After a tuning procedure the actual neutral-to-ground
voltage is used as base for calculation of the absolute trigger threshold.

Vectorial trigger
The vector trigger criterion is used, if the reference voltage U12 is available in order to measure the neutral to
ground voltage in amount and angle
(in case of a EFC50i hardware).

Trigger delay [s]

Programming of the trigger delay. The search operation is not started if the neutral-to-ground voltage returns to a
value inside the two trigger thresholds within the trigger delay.

Time constant [s]

A filter for suppression of eventually present needle pulses, which prevent a tuning procedure. Selectable time
constants are 0, 5, 10 and 15 seconds. Selection of 0 deactivates the filter. The filter has no influence either to the
value of the trigger threshold or to the limits of Vmax and Vearth.

Follow-up Vo [min]
Owing to weather influence fluctuations of the neutral-to-ground voltage may occur at overhead lines without any
change of the switching condition of the network. The actual neutral-to-ground voltage (according to the set time
interval) is used as new reference for the calculation of the trigger threshold (if actually, the controller is not in
trigger state or does not perform a tuning procedure). Input of „0“ deactivates the follow-up of the neutral-to-ground
voltage. The minimum value is 5 min.

Page 74 EFC50-V1.00
7 Parameters December 2010
Vmin [%]
Maximum values of the neutral-to-ground voltage lower than the set threshold Vmin are not accepted as resonance
maximum by the controller. If no voltage higher than Vmin is measured over the entire tuning range of the coil, the
controller adjusts the coil to the defined middle position (or alternatively blocks the coil - controller fine tuning).

Signal delay [min] delay of the Vmin function

Vlimit [%]
Threshold for change of the used control procedure. If the neutral-to-ground voltage does not exceed the set
threshold during the search operation, the resonance maximum is accepted only after checking the criteria for the
resonance voltage.

Vmax [%]
The controller may adjust the coil until reaching the set maximum voltage value. When reaching the threshold the
controller stops the tuning procedure.
(Depending on the settings under “Vo>Vmax“, see controller fine tuning)

Signal delay [s] delay of the Vmax function

Vearth [%]
The controller treats neutral to ground voltages higher than the set threshold as earthfault and immediately blocks
the coil movement during the tuning process.

Transient earthfault [0.1s]

Within the set time the controller treats an earthfault as transient earthfault and immediately blocks the coil
movement during the tuning process.

Signal delay [s] delay of the Vearth output function (OF.EARTFFAULT)

Threshold Zu [kOhm]
The controller calculates the asymmetry of the network after each automatic tuning operation.
If the value falls below the adjusted threshold, the output function (“ASYMMETRY“) is set. This output function can
be assigned to any free output contact. It is also possible to assigned the same contact, that is already used for the
general earthfault signal (at Vo > Vearth).
In order to see the calculated value on the EFC50, probably the displays must be changed.

Multiple busbar operating

Controller operating mode Selection if the controller is operating as Master or as Slave.

Behavior Slave controller In case of coupled busbars the Slave either will be blocked by the
master or will be forced to adjust the ASC to predefined position.
Coil position [%] Input of the predefined position.

7.3.2.1 Fine tuning controller

Middle-position Imid [%]

If the neutral-to-ground voltage does not exceed the threshold Vmin within the entire tuning range of the coil, the
controller adjusts the coil to the coil middle position.

Tolerated mismatch [A]

The adjusted value will be used as an admissible detuning of the calculated set position.
(Recommendation: >1% Imax)

Maximum tries of tuning operations

The amount of tuning procedures are counted. If the maximum tries are exceeded (in case of a couple of tuning
checks), the controller signalizes an error.

EFC50-V1.00 Page 75
December 2010 7 Parameters
7.3.2.1.1 Vo < Vmin

Vmin-trigger level [%]

Minimum necessary variation of the neutral-to-ground voltage (related to Vmin) which causes a tuning procedure.

Block coil if V<Vmin

Coil adjustment is blocked if the neutral-to-ground voltage remains below the threshold Vmin (coil is not connected
to the network).

7.3.2.1.2 Vo<Vlimit

Resonance voltage rate

Criteria for checking the resonance maximum at neutral to ground voltages below Vlimit during the search
procedure

Sensibility search operation [%]

During the coil adjustment the actual neutral to ground voltage is measured. If the actual voltage is outside the set
tolerance range for the precalculated voltage, the controller starts a new search procedure.

7.3.2.1.3 Vo>Vlimit

Sensibility tuning - check

If the actual neutral to ground voltage at the tuning point is outside the set tolerance range for the calculated voltage,
the controller starts a new search procedure.

Sensibility search operation [%]

During the coil adjustment the actual neutral to ground voltage is measured. If the actual voltage is outside the set
tolerance range for the calculated voltage, the controller starts a new search procedure.

7.3.2.1.4 Vo>Vmax

Vmax2 [%]
If Vmax2 (Vmax2>Vmax) is also exceeded when passing the resonance peak (check V>Vmax at „after tuning“), the
EFC50 stops the coil and tunes back to Vmax. Then the controller signalizes a compensation warning and
generates the message „tuned, not compensated“. If it is not possible to tune back to Vmax because of an end
switch, the coil will be stopped in the end switch (message „end switch“).
In this case some manual interference is necessary because Vo is bigger than Vmax.

Check V > Vmax

always: The controller stops the tuning procedure, if the actual neutral to ground voltage reaches Vmax.

after tuning: If it is necessary, the controller adjusts the coil over the resonance maximum and positions the coil to
the tuning point or stops tuning procedure, if the actual neutral to ground voltage reaches Vmax.

8.4.2 Menu Functions

Load parameters from controller

Enter name and directory for the parameter file of the EFC50. The parameters from the controller will be stored into
the PC. The percentage of transferred data is shown in the displayed bar.

Transmit parameters to controller

Enter name and directory of a parameter file already stored on the PC. The PC will send the parameters to the
controller. Observe that a parameter set of the EC50 consists of two files. The corresponding SPS-file (e.g.
“name.sps”) must be located in the same directory.
The transferred data can be checked in the controller menu, which opens automatically. In order to store the new
settings in the controller finally, this must be confirmed with “store“ when leaving the controller menu.
If you do not want to store the new transferred parameter in the controller, you can leave the controller menu with
“ignore“. Afterwards the controller is again working with the old settings.

Load Data buffer

Enter name and directory for the data file of the EFC50. The controller will send the data to the PC. The percentage
of transferred data is shown in the displayed bar.

Remark: if the data buffer becomes full, it will be stored into an archive file.

Page 86 EFC50-V1.00
8 EFC50Term December 2010
Load archive
Enter name and directory for the archiv file of the EFC50. The program informs about the available archive files
(record period, number of data sets). The xxx.inf file contains a kind of event list of the corresponding data buffer.
If you use a slow modem connection it is better to first download the small xxx. Inf file in order to evaluate if the
xxx.mwb file is worth to be downloaded.

Load statistics
Enter name and directory for the statistics text file. After downloading of the statistics all counters (exception: total
counters) can be reset.

Load event list

Enter name and directory for the statistics text file.

Monitoring controller
The terminal mode of EFC50Term (remote operation) starts. The controller display will be shown on the PC-monitor
and the controller software version is included to the headline of the window.

Softwareupdate

Enter the serial number of the controller and the corresponding password for the softwareupdate.
Please also enter name and directory of the new EFC50 - version (controller software) or eventually of the new
DSP-version (software for signal processor).
The password and the necessary files can be ordered at Trench Austria.

After confirmation (Parameters saved and then OK) a second window opens, where you state, if you want to
transfer EFC50 (and/or DSP) software or if you just want to verify.

Please save actual parameter file and data buffer before you start with the software update.

Attention: Do not disconnect the device from the power supply during the software – update !

The transfer lasts about 5 min (at 115 kB baud rate).

After correct transmission, the new software is on the controller and can be
activated with „YES“. With NO you can still cancle the update.

EFC50-V1.00 Page 87
December 2010 8 EFC50Term
Before Running the new software the controller needs to be rebooted..

Softwareupdate EFX
The expansion box EFX could provide the EFC50 with additional digital in- and outputs.
If a software update is required for the expansion unit EFX, this will be possible via this menu item. The software
update works only via the serial interface and at 9600baud, data configuration 8N1.

Softwareupdate with boot loader ...

If the software update has not worked (wrong or corrupt RTB-file) , there is still a backup – possibility for performing
the software update via the implemented boot loader. This menu item can only be selected before a connection has
been established with the controller.
For a CPU or DSP software update it is necessary to enter a correct password (depending on the serial number of
the device).
After selection of the item 'software update with boot loader ...' the program TABC (Trench Austria Boot Control) is
started. Depending on the selection in EFC50Term (COM / LAN) the program trials to connect to the EFC50, which
must be in the start up mode. Therefore please switch OFF/ON the controller.
PC COM1/2/3/4: 38400bd 8N1 <-> COM1 EFC50
PC LAN: IP 16.20.7.22 <-> LAN EFC50 (with crossover cable)

At connection via LAN it is strongly recommended to have a direct connection from PC to EFC50 via a crossover
cable !

8.4.3 Menu Settings

Communication

The relevant settings for the PC and data transmission can be

set.

Port: RS232 Interface at the PC. USB-RS232 converters are

usually linked with a virtual COM-port.

The following settings must be the same as at the

controller:
- Baudrate
- Parity
- Databits
- Device address

Delay time between data [ms]:

- 0 at direct connection
- 10 - 50 via modem

Page 88 EFC50-V1.00
8 EFC50Term December 2010
Several different modems can be added in the window “modem”. The file „kommpar.dat“ contains all adjustments
for controllers (station name, phone numbers, etc) which are available via modem. The directory of this file is
adjustable there.

The communication parameters of defined modems can be set here. You can find the relevant settings for your
modem in the relevant modem instruction manual.

Init string
In principle modems, which are initialized by factory settings (&F), can operate with EFCTerm. Additional
adjustments (e.g. X3) correspond to the individual phone plants.

For instance, if a Devolo Microlink is used, the init string &F%C0%G1%B9600 effects, that data compression is
deactivated and transmission speed is constant (9600 Bd).

LAN settings
The device can be operated alternatively to the RS232
interface by Ethernet (RJ45) as well.
If the controller is connected to an existing network a free IP
address must be given by your network administrator and
assigned to the device.

It is also possible to make a direct connection between PC

and controller via cross over cable. Since the controller does
not provide any IP addresses automatically, the PC must
use a fixed pre-adjusted address. IP addresses can be
adjusted on the PC under TCP/IP properties of your LAN
connection.

9 Options
The parameters of all EFC50 software options are described in chapter 7.

9.1 Scada - SPABus

The SPABus-Interface in the EFC50 is implemented according to ABB document „SPABUS COMMUNICATION
PROTOCOL V2.4“ dated 21.2.1992.

9.1.1 Realisation in EFC50

9.1.1.1 Checksumme und Parity

The checksum is calculated as XOR - logical operation of the individual message bytes. The start bytes ”>”
and ”<” are included. The special SPABus bytes cr, lf and & as well as the checksum itself are not included. If the
controller EFC50 receives the byte ”XX” instead of the checksum, the controller will not check. The EFC50 always
adds the checksum when sending.

9.1.1.2 Internal processing of messages

The EFC50 checks the received serial data for the start byte ”>”. If the following bytes contain the device address
(adjustable in the menu) of the EFC50 or if they contain the broadcast address 900, then the following commands
will be checked. If the calculated checksum does not fit, a NACK-Message ( Not acknowledge - Error Code 0 ) will
be answered. In the other case the received command will be decoded and processed.

9.1.1.3 Dialog between EFC50 and SPABus-Master

The dialog between SPABus-Master (Request >...) and EFC50 (Answer <...) is described in the following examples
(Device address 18 and checksum XX) .
>10RC:XX or read Slave Status >900WT:ss.sss:XX or BROADCAST write time

Read backup

When the EFC50 is switched ON, initially all states (events) are set to 0. The controller answers to the request
„read backup >10RB:XX“ with <10D:00.000 0E50:3F, as long as for the first time the request „read last
events“ (>10RL:XX) is received. Then the answer to „read backup“ will be the same as for „read last events“.

The execution of a command is not indicated with COT 12 (remote operation) but with COT 1 (spontaneous).
That means that commands are executed without feedback.

Example: Adjustment of ASC

The controller is in automatic mode. The command with INFO 6, FUNC 140, DPI = 2 sets the controller into manual
mode.

The command with INFO 1, FUNC 140, DPI = 2 adjust the coil in direction Imax until:

- the upper end switch is reached

- the command with INFO 1, FUNC 140, DPI = 1 is received (motor stop)
- the command with INFO 2, FUNC 140, DPI = 2 is received (motor down)

The command INFO 3, FUNC 140, DPI = 2 adjusts the coil in direction Imax, until the adjusted motor impulse time
expires or the upper end switch is reached.

The command with INFO 140, FUNC 5, DPI = 2 sets back the controller to Automatic.

9.5 Scada IEC 61850 Protocol
The interface for connecting via RJ45 to Scada system according to IEC 61850 protocol is available as hardware
option board.
The actual state of the EFC50 is transferred via RS232 to a software – model which runs on the hardware option
board (61850-board). The (external) connection cable is a standard zero modem cable. The 61850 board finally
provides the Scada wit the required signals and measurement data and also handles the commands which are
probably received from Scada.
In principle the whole set of signals as described under clause 9.2 (IEC103) is available.

9.6 Resistor control
The resistor control works in automatic and manual controller mode. Two different operation modes are available
depending on the normal resistor state („home position“) in the sound network.

9.6.1 Temperature model

The temperature increase due to Vo2/R-losses are added to the actual resistor temperature, temperature decrease
due to cooling is subtracted.

The resistor temperature (T) is indicated as percent value. The maximum value (100%) is the temperature, which
the resistor reaches after continuous load at solid earthfault (Vo = 100%) during the set permissible duty time.
The minimum value (0%) is the ambient temperature.

When the maximum temperature is reached the controller will automatically set the command to switch off the
resistor. Then the resistor control stays blocked until a reconnection is possible without exceeding the maximum
temperature.

Warning
In any case check the adjustments for permissible duty time (at Vo = 100%) and cooling time of your
resistor according to the manufacturer’s data (rating plate, manual of coil or resistor, etc.)

9.6.2 Home position OFF

Manual resistor control
At each manual trigger the resistor is switched on without delay only for the adjusted time „Turn on time 1“

Automatic resistor control

The automatic resistor control is triggered, if the neutral to ground voltage Vo exceeds the adjusted threshold
Vearth. The following parameters define the behaviour of the automatic resistor control.

9.7 Control at earthfault

The neutral to ground voltage exceeds the adjusted threshold Vearth. The controller has already calculated the
valid resonance point.

If after a certain time delay Vo still is above Vearth the controller adjusts the coil to the calculated resonance point.

9.8 Automatic switch Vo>Vmax

By means of this option the controller adjusts the coil across the resonance peak to the correct tuning point, if Vo
exceeds the adjusted threshold Vmax. In order to limit Vo during passing the resonance two alternatives are
available:

- Resistor connection (Vo is damped)

- Disconnection of ASC (Vo very low - isolated network)

Automatic switch with resistor connection

The controller sets the “On“-command, if the available tuning range in direction to the estimated tuning point is
bigger than the parameter “minimum width [%]“
If this is not the case, the tuning point at the other side of the resonance curve will not be available and the
controller sets „Vmax“ and „Tuned, not compensated“.

December 2010 9 Options
After connection of the resistor the EFC50 stores the actual Vo voltage as a reference „Vref“ and tunes the coil
across the resonance peak until 95% of Vref are reached. Then the controller starts a new tuning operation at the
correct side of the resonance curve.
If the end switch is reached before 95% of Vref are reached, then the controller adjusts the coil back across the
resonance point until Vo reaches 95% of Vref. Then the controller disconnects the resistor and starts a new tuning
operation. If Vmax is reached again, the controller stops and sets „Vmax“ and „Tuned, not compensated“.

Automatic switch with disconnection of the ASC

The controller sets the “Off“-command for the ASC, if the available tuning range in direction to the estimated tuning
point is bigger than the parameter “maximum width [%]“
If this is not the case, the controller sets „Vmax“ and „Tuned, not compensated“.

After disconnection of the ASC the controller adjusts the coil by the value defined „maximum width“ across the
resonance point. The controller then connects the coil again and start a new tuning operation at the correct side of
the resonance curve.

If the neutral to ground voltage exceeds Vmax after reclosing of the ASC, the controller sets the “Off“-command
again. In this case the coil will be moved back across the resonant point to coil position, where the threshold Vmax
was exceeded. Then the ASC will be closed in and the controller starts a new tuning process.
If the Vo voltage again reaches Vmax the controller stops and sets „Vmax“ and „Tuned, not compensated“.

9.9 More controllers

With this option the tuning of a network including several controllers is possible without mutual disturbances and
without additional wiring or special operation instruction (e.g. to leave only one controller in automatic mode). All
involved controllers should have this option activated and set to “YES“.

After a sufficient change (trigger threshold) of Vo each controller calculates it’s own trigger delay based on a
random number operation (of course within certain limits).

The controller with the shortest trigger delay starts the tuning operation first. All other controllers are still supervising
the neutral to ground voltage.

If other controllers recognise a Vo change bigger than „tolerance range of trigger“ times „trigger threshold“ within
the set time „% of coil running time“, they interpret this change as result of tuning activity caused by the first
controller. Then they calculate new random trigger delays.

If there is no voltage change within this time the other controllers start their tuning operations also.

Normally the first controller is already able to tune the network. The following controllers will only perform tuning
checks but adjust their coils on the same position afterwards.
If this is not the case the second (or following) controller(s) finally tune(s) the network.

Hint

If the desired compensation degree is adjusted in percentage, the network parameters resp. the resonance
point of the network - determinated by the second (or following) controller(s) - is decreased by the detuning
degree of the first controller.

In order to avoid a couple of tuning procedures of all controllers, an absolute detuning degree (compensation [A])
is recommended.

9.10 External circuit breaker
This option requires a signal from the transformer’s circuit breaker to a digital input of the EFC50.

If the option is activated the controller adjusts the coil onto a predefined position if the transformer is disconnected.
If the transformer is reconnected the controller gets a forced trigger and starts a new tuning operation.

9.11 Fix coil control

If required by the network size this option enables the controller to activate an additional fix coil. The fix coil will be
connected, if the tuning point is situated above „Switching on point“ and will be disconnected if it is below „Switching
off point“.

If the measured neutral to ground voltage Vo doesn’t exceed the Vmin - threshold over the tuning range of Petersen
coil, the controller switches off the fix coil (resp. switches on, if the fix coil is disconnected) and adjusts the Petersen
coil to predefined coil middle position, if the neutral to ground voltage doesn’t exceed the Vmin - threshold over the
entire tuning range.

If the option is activated the lightning LED “fixcoil on“ indicates that the controller has set the command to switch on
the fix coil.

The adjustment of lower and upper position limits should consider the size of fix coil in order to avoid unstable
behaviour of the tuning procedure.

9.12 Vectorial trigger
Without the vectorial measurement a new tuning operation will only starts , if the amount of the neutral to ground
voltage exceeds the trigger level for longer than the adjusted trigger delay.
In some cases of switching operations in the network the amount of the neutral to ground voltage doesn’t exceed
the voltage threshold.
However, if the phase of the neutral to ground voltage is also considered, this kind of switching operations can be
recognized and a new control procedure will be triggered. The trigger threshold corresponds to a trigger circle
around the voltage at the last tuning conditions.

The phase measurement requires a reference voltage V12 (maximum 110 VAC) synchronous to the network. The
reference voltage can be taken from busbar measuring bay (phase 1 to phase 2 voltage secondary)
An easier arrangement can also be a single phase transformer (230/100 VAC) connected to station power supply.

Attention

AC-voltage supplied by frequency converter (UPC) is not suitable due to phase inaccuracy !
