Literary Considerations - (see text, pp 140-144) Describe your target population

demographics (gender, age range, estimated educational preparation) and explain how their
literacy levels affect the content used to implement the teaching plan. Explain what
literacy considerations the nurse should take into account for the target audience.

Health education is a vital piece to achieving community goals. The community is a an

important link for delivering effective healthcare and offers nurses opportunities to provide
focused health education within a setting more familiar to community members (Nies &
McEwen, 2019). For nurses to provide the best understood retainable education it is
important to understand and be aware of how families, groups and individuals learn.
Learning theories can help nurses recognize what may work to possibly change the way
education is delivered and received. Studies show that low literacy affects the ability to
utilize access to healthcare and there is a greater risk for poor health (Nies & McEwen,
2019). Nurses targeting education to a group of young African-American women should be
prepared to assess reading level of target audience and adjust learning material based on
learner needs. Education material should be simple, to the point and relevant for the
learner.
