In lieu with the celebration of the International Women’s Month, let us talk about
the campaign that advocates the definition, establishment, and attainment of political,
economic, personal, and social equality of sexes, that is, feminism.
Centuries ago, women are depicted in the Philippines as the Maria Clara type
who are beautiful and precious, yet submissive. Although there is nothing wrong with
being such, there is definitely something wrong in forcing women to follow that kind of
model or standard. Thus, the births of female superheroes such as Wonder Woman,
Black Widow, Captain Marvel, and even our very own, Darna are significant in society
for they promote women empowerment. Although women can choose to be like Maria
Clara, they can also choose to be strong and brave like Darna.
Now, let us define what feminism means. The common misconception that we
hear about feminism is that it means female superiority over males. But it does not
mean such a thing. Feminism is about gender equality. It means having equal rights and
equal opportunities no matter what your gender is. Mainly, is about fighting patriarchy
which is a system in society wherein males take over and hold all the power while
women have none and are excluded. But through time, it has grown and developed
from that definition. Feminism no longer is just about fighting patriarchy but also about
fighting gender stereotypes in general. It also now includes men’s liberation as they are
also affected greatly by gender roles. It is not just about females nor just for females.
Also, a man can be a feminist same as a woman can support the patriarch.
Feminism does not just support equality when it is in favor of women. It also
supports equality in favor of men such as the way it does not question when men do not
give up their seats in public transport to give way for a woman. It understands that men
also have physical needs and may be tired. It also accepts and respects the truth that
men can also be abused physically, sexually, and through other forms by women and
fights for that notion in the court. Therefore, feminism is not a one-way fight nor is it for
only one side. It is for all.
Feminism does not conform women to a single stereotype but supports freedom
and choice. You can be a woman who supports herself and be a feminist. You can be
domesticated and still be a feminist. You can be anything you want to be. It is not about
competing with other females but empowering them to be who and what they want to
become.
This month, we do not just march for women’s rights. We march for everyone.
We march for equality. And we fight for feminism.
