When designing a shelter I put focus on a space not

only for the focus of waiting, but also in context of
gathering and the movement of users that a shelter
experiences. With these focuses in mind I designed
an orthogonal structure with three distinctive
sections, all with multi-level roofs to help
emphasize the separation of compartments. With
this idea I was able to create a space specifically

for sitting and standing for a short to moderate

amount of time, a space with a lending library for a
longer sitting period, and a walk-though space for
gathering and momentary waiting.

With separate functions in mind, I created light

details that emphasized these areas. Using
predominantly rectangle lighting panels, the
standing/sitting area is to contain fixtures in both
the backboard and the seating to symbolize standing
and sitting, and to be motion activated with the
schedule of the incoming buses. For the lending
library, panels are to be used in a pendant-like
fashion hanging over the seating to symbolize that it
is a space to sit and stay. And for the walkthrough,
there is an emphasis on the entirety of the space to
not only contrast the other areas but also bring
light to those standing and waiting. These lights
are to work on a motion clock with the passing
of users through the opening of the shelter.
Overall I wanted to design a space that could be
both interactive with the users as well as safe and
inviting.
