Text-to-Web Remediation Reflection

In our recent project Text-to-Web Remediation, it has taught me how designing and developing a

website involves more critical thinking and a whole lot of details than one would think.

Converting text into a website requires some steps for a successful website. When creating my

website, I learned a variety of things, for starters I had to incorporate the information in my

global crisis essay into my website. Even though all my information was at hand in those pages, I

could not just paste long paragraphs in each tab. I learned how to create short but informative

text segments to keep my readers at ease. This process showed how much presentation is key,

along with my text segments there are pictures and a color scheme to fall along with it. Making

my website presentable and professional made my audience more inclined to know more. Once I

started creating my website, I brainstormed a couple of ideas of how I wanted my website to look

and what information I wanted in it. Although all the information in my essay was reliable and

useful, I could not just paste everything on a tab. Since people have a harder time reading long

text segments and are prone to doze off nowadays, I had to keep it short and easy to read. When

writing the text segments, since they were short I had to choose which information I wanted to

put. Although all the information is valuable in my essay, I took the most vital and had images

show the other content. This project has also taught me that a website with pictures attracts more

readers. With each segment it is separated by images and statistics, but not just any image off the

web. I kept in mind that a picture is worth more than a thousand words so I made sure they were

relevant and useful for better understanding. With this new knowledge I can now make more

online projects more appealing to my audience. One of the most important things I learned from

designing this website is that a quality design and color scheme helps viewers focus on the value

or importance of my content instead of being distracted by bold colors and long paragraphs.

Even with a drastic topic, providing my audience with a positive experience such as easy

navigating, pictures, different subjects etc. encourages them to return. Another learning

experience that I encountered is always thinking about the functionality of my website, making

sure there are not any loading issues or cut off pictures. I used a variety of different word choices

and made my overall language direct; I found that incorporating variety keeps readers interested.

When creating my tabs, I wanted them in sequence to my topic and that whichever tab a user is

on they would be able to tell where they are at. Another key factor to developing my website was

thinking about who my audiences are. I did not want to have my website pertain to a certain

group of people but rather everybody included. With people who could not relate to my topic, I

made sure that there were examples set to understand the other perspective. To get more personal

and have a connection with my readers I developed an “About the Author” tab, so that they can

get to know the person behind this website. That is something I found important to learn while

creating tabs such as references and resource tabs so that my audience can become more

comfortable and to know that what they are reading is reliable and useful. Lastly, what I learned

by investigating other websites is that each website is unique and takes a different approach to

their main content. I wanted the overall purpose of my website not to lead people into fear but to

enlighten them on a global crisis even if it does not apply to them. Reflecting back on this whole

process of developing and designing a website from the ground up, I am glad I was able to

experience it. By doing this myself it has really shown me all the little details make the

difference and that everyone does it differently. I am confident in the fact that if I wanted to

pursue another website, I would be able to. This learning experience has given me the tools and

knowledge to understand how much developing a website can really bring text alive, this process

has shaped the content of my essay by not just giving information about a topic but being able to

locate resources and input more statistics. I am glad that I was able to develop a new skill, that I

hope will keep on growing and that people experience the same process I did.
