Dear Mrs. Davis,

In my weebly, I have collected 4 sample writings from my writing career. The selection of
sample writings that I have chosen is from different classes that I took during college. These
writings show my progression with my writing while I have been in college. My writing style is
steadily progressing throughout my college career.

In my first sample writing which is Being an American, I write about the true meaning of being
an American. I said that the true meaning of being an American is being patriotic, the right to be
free, and seeking the American dream. I later connect the essay to my personal dreams and what
it means to me to be a true American. In my conclusion I explain that patriotism and the right to
have freedom plays a major role in Americans' lives today and also seeking the American
dream to become successful is major to many Americans. This essay conveys transitions which
has always been one of my known struggles. The more I have been writing the more I have
been getting better at transitioning in my essays. Before writing my essays I usually write an
outline to help prepare for my essay. Doing so has always helped me begin writing my essay by
giving me a guideline on what to write about. It also helps me structure and better organize my
essay.

In my sample writing 2, I wrote about a specific podcast that I had to reflect on. This is a
different type of essay where I explain and reflect on what I learned from listening to the
podcast. In the essay I listened to Joe Rogan and Ben Shapiro. Ben Shapiro is a known American
commentator who graduated from Harvard Law School and he is also known for being a strong
conservative. Shapiro goes from college to college talking to students from all around. Writing
this essay has helped me become better at listening and explaining what the podcast is talking
about. At the end of the essay I explained that overall the podcast was informative and I learned
that there are many different arguments and debates that are in the political world. More people
need to understand that everyone does not have the same standpoint and that's okay. Writing this
essay has taught me many different techniques which is why I used it as my second sample
writing.

In my third sample writing, I wrote about a sacred text for my world religions class. The
religion I chose to review over is Buddhism. Buddhism is a faith that was founded by Siddhartha
Gautama or mainly known as “The Buddha” in India. This essay is the first essay I wrote for
my world religion class which is why this selection is important to me. In this essay I had to
put much information together to convey my point. This was a big struggle at first ,but as I
began writing I understood where to put the information at. Writing an outline before the essay
is in any case always helps me by giving me a true guideline to go by. My transition in sample
writing three were transitioning from talking about Buddhism and Christianity. This transition
helps convey the similarities and differences between the two religions. In the end of my essay
I concluded that the sacred text that I reviewed has helped me understand world religions more.
These religions have impacted many lives in different ways across the world. This essay is one
of my favorites because I learned more about religions. This essay shows the progression that I
have made.

For my sample writing 4, I wrote an activism essay about police brutality. This is an essay that
reflects on an essay I wrote a while back. Although this is a good essay, it reflects on how I
progressed on my more recent essays. In this essay I wrote about In today's society police
brutality has affected many lives in different ways such as African Americans being targeted,
young minorities dying, and police brutality being the leading cause of death for U.S men.
My writing process for this essay was similar to others which is to write an outline and
rough draft to help prepare for final essays. In the conclusion of my essay in sample 4 writing I
said Police brutality is not only affecting African Americans but Amercans as a whole.
Police brutality affecting young men in America is a major outbreak in today's world. This
activism essay was very interesting to write and shows the progression of my writing from then
to know.

In conclusion of my cover letter, I have learned many helpful techniques to help me better write
on my future essays. I will not only use these techniques for college ,but for life as well. There
are many different ways of writing and I am motivated to learn to write the best. Expanding my
knowledge as much as I can is a goal for me. I am committed to learning how to write as best as
I can.

Sincerely,

Cayman McKinney
