The Rizal Law

Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. The Catholic Church opposing the teachings of the life and works of Jose
Rizal
ii. The analysis of De la Costa’s draft pastoral letters
iii. Making a big deal about whether letting the teachings of Rizal be taught to
educational institutions

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought

That the life and works of Jose Rizal was normally agreed upon by all to be
integrated on educational institutions. I thought it was a subject naturally
recognized without any disputes, because why would we not study the life
and works of the hero who stand for his country?

However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now

think/realize
That there were those who oppose the teachings of Jose Rizal’s life and
works to the student’s. Knowing that it was mainly the Catholic Church who
opposed the bill has given me quite a shock, but I understand the grudge,
since Rizal wrote some writing showing his bitterness to the church.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought

That the implementation of the life and works of Jose Rizal on educational
institutions are not of or shouldn’t be a concern to me and my fellow
students for the reason that it is unnecessary to the course that we are
taking. Therefore, I normally didn’t normally bother or go deep into
studying it.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now
think/realize
That Sen. Recto’s vision of standing up for his belief that studying the life
and works of Jose Rizal would strengthen the students’ love for the
country, lighting up the spark of patriotism in their hearts.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought

That in Rizal’s work, particularly Noli Me Tangere, was simply just a novel
written to show how two lovers are fighting for their love out of a society
that is already corrupted by the Spaniards back then and that certain
countrymen that are siding with them

However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now

think/realize
That the novel has deeper meaning, to show us messages hidden on
figures of speech. Rizal has targeted those who have become corrupted by
the Spaniard’s way. Thus, the reason why the catholic church are opposed
to the Rizal bill.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?)
i. Why not make the unexpurgated edition only available for those who
truly wants to learn about it?
ii. Doesn’t the opposition of the church make them guilty of their
predecessor’s actions?
iii. Why would catholic schools close just for the reason that Rizal’s
teachings of nationalism is taught to their educational institution?

4. Clarification (What are the areas of the text that are still unclear to you?)
i. The draft letters that are written by Horacio de la Costa for the bishops.
ii. The threat wherein catholic schools will shut down if the Rizal bill is
passed.
iii. The bill violating the freedom of conscience and religion
