GED109 – Gender and Society

The integration of gender and society to college students is important nowadays,


especially when LGBTQ communities are on the rise. Whenever gender is the matter at hand,
countless issues, arguments and controversies arise for the reason that the society is not yet
mature enough to handle or address these kinds of issues. We already know that these issues
prevail in order for those with concerns to receive their rights and privileges, but on the other
hand, it is also affecting our society which is slowly turning into a big pile of frivolous disputes,
and it is not healthy and will only result to the society’s potential to go to waste. However, there is
quite an obvious solution to these complex issues. According to Jose Rizal, the youth is the hope
of our nation, and he firmly believes it. As the young ones grow, they will soon inherit what was
left in our society. Therefore, it is important for us to integrate the advancement of research and
development of gender and its effects on the society, and to boost the learning of the students
through the use of interactive learning instruments and methods. The readings specially points
out effective learning approach and research methods in order for students to appreciate the
complex issues that is developed from the behaviors of a man and a woman and on how their
distinction influences the society economically, politically, and in their education.

To teach about gender, professors have their own ways and style of distributing
knowledge to their student. They may use instruments to channel to their teachings in order for
the students to fathom its context, and this is the reason why I truly applaud Isabelle Cherney’s
dedication and commitment for the reason of teaching her students with utmost effort and quality
to supply them with great insight and understanding about gender and its psychology. Even in her
first day teaching her class, she immediately sets up the environment for the students so that they
wouldn’t feel any pressure or anxiety when dealing about her subject matter. She made them feel
comfortable first so that her students will not feel the feeling of judgement that will result to
instructor and the student getting to know each other. Not only does she instill knowledge to her
students, but also let them experience interactive discussions with their fellow classmates, such
as brainstorming ideas, observing dyads, working in groups, role playing, and other activities that
peaks the student’s interest. These learning activities makes the gender subject straightforward
and easy to understand. It is also easy for students to grasp the subject with more understanding
and cultivates the knowledge they’ve learned easily with the help of academic resources that are
readily available, particularly video clips that presents gender roles and differences, and cultural
issues that surrounds gender. Cherney also integrates the effective use of research methods and
procedures as well as exploring different hypothesis testing that will result to an enjoyable
experience for the students and for them to determine different gender theories such as biological
theories, evolutionary theories, and gender role socializations.

I surely believe that this type of teaching approach makes a student eager to learn and
raises the productivity level of their studies. Especially when teaching about complex discussion
such as gender, this method or approach of learning being integrated to students proves to be
effective and adequate. Furthermore, by giving them the right environment, this gives them the
right mindset when it comes to conducting a research study about gender. Furthermore, this also
builds up their social confidence. Moreover, the use of appropriate materials and resources, like
certain articles and video clips gives students an enhanced learning experience. Therefore, in
dealing with psychology of gender course, all stated above are indeed very effective and will result
to students engaging actively to learning.
