Unit (I) INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING DESIGN & POWER SUPPLY :


Definition of Engineering design , design aims , system approach , system elements ,
strategy & scope, selection of components ,noise sources ,PCB layout
Classification , Linear & Switch mode linear : dc & ac type , Block schematic DC
power supply : Block schematic , discrete design , IC based design using 723 or
similar ICS & three terminal regulator . Protection circuits like short circuit protection
over voltage protection etc. (9 Lect.)

Unit (II) SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLY


Comparison with Linear regulator , Basic Configurations , switched regulator
topologies , Design of flyback , forward converter switching power supplies ( 50-
250W) step up , step down & step up / down switching regulator , study of switching
regulator control circuit based on ICS like MC 34063 & A78540 . Assignment on
SMPS design based on IC A 78540 or MC 34063 . (9 Lect.)

Unit (III) DESIGN OF DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM :


Circuit level design of at least one DAC , of analog & digital type each . Design
should included signal sensing , isolation , signal conditioning & display systems .

Unit (IV) DESIGN OF STATE MACHINE :


Design to include following - State machines , State diagram , ASM technique ,
Implementation of combinational logic in state machines , using MSI , LSI devices ,
Assignment based on real life problems like Traffic Light Control , Elevator vending
machine etc . (7 Lect.)

Unit (V) PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER :


Continuous & discrete process control , ladder diagram , microcontroller based
process controller . Assignment on systems like Oven , Washing Machine ,
Combinational locking systems etc . (7 Lect.)

Unit (VI) DESIGN OF AN ANNUNCIATOR :


Design to include following , multiple inputs , audio visual indicator , logging facility
interface to microprocessor / PC , inputs to include from the following detectors
smoke / fire , voltage levels , over current , movement , Light , temperature etc.
indication by LED / LCD , Alphanumeric display . Reliability testing of design .

Mini Project & Assignments

Mini project should be from small systems required in laboratory or real life , project

to be designed , tested on bread board , fabricated on manual or CAD based PCBs with due

consideration to mechanical aspects for enclosure & control panel design , A complete

documentation in the form of project report is to be submitted . Due consideration should be

given to Mini Project while assessing students for term work .

Three assignments to be completed .Out of three two should be corresponding to

complete design of analog and digital system design each. Third assignment should be

corresponding to the software simulation of system.

Use of programming language like C / C ++ / VC ++ & packages like PSPICE is expected


Mini Project

Miniproject should be from small systems required in laboratory or real life. Project to be
designed, tested on bread board, fabricated on manual or (A1) based PCBs with the
consideration to mechanical aspects for enclosure & control panel design.
A complete demo in the form of project report is to be submitted, Due to
consideration should be given to miniproject while assessing student for termwork.
