I. Purpose and scope

The instrument is designed and made as per the Industry Standard of People’s Republic of
China SH0315 “Technical Requirements of Closed Cup Flash Point Tester” and the Company
Standard of Shanghai Q/YXYY21 “SYD-3536 Petroleum Products Closed Cup Flash Point Tester”.
It is suitable to be used to determine flash point of petroleum products, which is expressed as the
lowest temperature, at which the mixture of oil sample vapor and air around contacts flame and
flashes when the oil sample is heated in a closed cup.

II. Main technical specification and parameters

1. Power supply: AC 220V±10%, 50 Hz;
2. Heating device:
(1) It is made of SiC materials. Its power is 600 W;

(2) Heating power is adjustable from 0 W～600 W;

3. Temperature rising rate: 1℃～12℃ per minute;

4. Stirring device:
(1) Stirring motor: 45TYZ constant speed motor;
(2) Driving mode: by a soft shaft;
(3) Stirring blade: 8 mm×40 (mm);
5. Standard oil cup:
(1) Inner diameter: 50.8 mm;
(2) Depth: 56 mm;
(3) Scale depth: 34.2 mm;
(4) Oil sample cubage: about 70 ml;
6. Flame application device:
(1) Flame source: coal gas or other combustible gas for civil use;
(2) Aperture of the device: 0.8 mm;
7. Thermometer: Inner calibrated mercury thermometer, as per GB/T514;

(1) -30℃～170℃, Scale division is 1 ℃;

(2) 100℃～300℃, Scale division is 1 ℃;

8. Ambient temperature: ≤35℃;

9. Relative humidity: ≤85％;

10. Total power consumption: not more than 650 W;

III. Main structure and electric circuit

(I) Main structure
The main structure of the instrument is shown as Fig.1.

1. Gas inlet: The instrument connects to outer gas source through this inlet. You can adjust gas
rate at gas inlet.

2. Flame application device:

3. Stirring motor: To stir oil sample in the cup.
4. Soft shaft: It connects stirring motor and stirring blade to form the stirring system.
5. Shutter: To control the flame application device.
6. Spring knob: To control the shutter.
7. Furnace: To heat oil sample in the cup.
8. Oil cup seat: To hold spare oil cup;
9. Control panel: See Fig.2.
(1) Stirring switch: Turn on the switch, and then the indication light is on and the stirrer starts
working.
(2) Heat regulation knob: To adjust heating power of furnace.
(3) Power switch: Turn on the switch, and then the indication light is on and the instrument
gets power.
(4) Voltmeter: To indicate the voltage through the furnace.

(II) Electric circuit

The circuit is mainly composed of heating, heating regulation, and stirring system. Turn on the
Power switch, the heater will start running. The voltage regulation circuit is composed of
bidirectional silicon controlled rectifier. Rotate the Heat Regulation knob to adjust the heating
power of furnace. The voltage of furnace is shown on the voltmeter. The stirring motor is controlled
by the Stir switch.

IV. Operation methods

1. Please carefully read the Operation Manual before use.
2. Please carefully read the National Standard of People’s Republic of China GB/T261 “Test
Methods for Flash Point of Petroleum Products (Closed Cup Methods)”, to acquaint and familiar
with test methods, test procedures, and test requirements.
3. According to the stipulation of GB/T261, the instrument should be used in a dark room

without air draft, so that you can observe flash conveniently. Please get ready for all test apparatus
and materials.
4. Check the working state of the instrument to make sure it is in accord with working
environment and condition stipulated in the Operation Manual.
5. Check the outer shell of the instrument to make sure it is fine grounded.
6. Pour the oil sample into the oil cup and start the stirring motor. The stirrer is driven by soft
shaft to stir sample.
7. Please adjust the heating rate as per the stipulation of GB/T261 (Rotate the Heat Regulation
knob to control the heating power. The heating voltage is shown on the voltmeter).
8. Please connect the outer gas source to the instrument, ignite the flame application device,
and adjust the flame size before the oil temperature reaches to the expected flash point of oil sample
as per the relative standards.
9. Rotate the spring knob to move shutter. Then the hole on the oil cup cover will open and the
flame application device will move downwards automatically to ignite the oil sample once.
10. Continue making test as per the stipulation of GB/T261 until you get test results.

V. Attention
1. The power supply wire should have fine grounding end for safety.
2. Turn off the outer gas source after test.
3. Please turn off the Power switch and Stir switch after tests and keep it in a dry and ventilated
place.
4. Place the spare oil cup in the oil cup seat when it is not used.
5. The instrument is suitable to make determination for oil sample, the expected closed cup
flash point of which is lower than 280 ℃.
6. If there is any trouble appears, please ask a professional to check and repair it.
Warning: If there is any trouble appears, please cut off power supply immediately. Then ask a
professional to check and repair it. You can use the instrument again only after the problem is solved
to avoid any accidents.
