Main features of Multiphase Well Testing

The Roxar Multiphase Meter measures foam

and emulsion flows as well as all flow
regimes
It gives exact, real time flow data for oil, gas
and water production of the well under test
Field proven design. More than 300 Roxar
Meters have been delivered
Multiphase Metering of a well is comparable
to the principle of an electrocardiogram
(EKG), diagnosing the activity and
anomalies of the human heart
Multiphase Well Testing Services
Offers a compact and the most
efficient solutions to optimizing
reservoir production

 Delivers significant on-site cost

savings
- NO investment required by client
 Reduced risk of environmental
hazards
-There is NO gas exposure
 The Roxar Multiphase meter
improves reservoir management by
offering unique accuracy and
repeatability figures by measuring
both liquid and gas velocities
Case History 1 - November 2001

 Seven naturally producing oil wells

were tested.
3” 5k MPFM from Roxar Flow
Measurement.
All within 10% of test separator
readings (limited PVT data available
for calibration purposes).
The FTHP varied between 255 and
800 psig.
 Oil SG - 0.809 @ 60°F.
 Gas SG - 0.766.
 Oil pour point - 34°C.
 GOR’s up to 4300 scf/bbl (620 psig)
Case History 2 - February 2002
 Good client PVT data available
(surface recombination sample)
2 wells tested, both produced with
ESP’s.
Operational within 2 hours arrival at
site.
 6 hour well test.
Accuracy within 1% on oil, water &
gas.
 FTHP 30 - 100 psig (slugging flow).
 Average GVF - 98%
 Average water cut - 40%
Lessons Learnt From Operation of
MPFM’s
Pre-job planning is essential, with access to accurate PVT data.
Unit can be safely operated by two personnel
Competent personnel required who are trained to commission,
operate and troubleshoot operation of the equipment.
Meter can be rigged up and commissioned within 2 hours of arrival to
site.
Stable wells can be tested in under 4 hours, whereas slugging wells
may require a little longer.
Meter must be flushed following operation, to prevent build-up of hard
deposits on sensor electrodes.

Life Cycle Cost – MultiPhase Meters - Conclusion
Multiphase meter from RFM :
4 – 5 times higher MTTF than other technologies
Life time of gamma meter 3 times higher than OTHERS
More than 350 Meters sold to commercial application –
minimise the risk of failure
Only vendor which can offer fully redundant MPM
to assure a successful and unique regularity
Why MultiPhase Meters?
Excluding the test separator on new installations.
(Statoil, Gullfaks Satellites Project reported CAPEX savings of NOK 60 million by using two RFM
MPhM’s instead of a new test separator )

Timesaving well test, and continuous monitoring of the impact of choke

tuning.
(Proved that RFM MPhM’s can test four wells in 60 minutes, Statoil Gullfaks B )

Early detection of water/gas break through in a well.

(Offering enhanced recovery. )

 Continuous monitoring of the production.

(Optimising the reservoir drainage to enhance recovery. )

Simple maintenance compared to conventional separator technology.

(Estimated by offshore operators to 50% vs. conventional test separators. )

 Pipeline Management
(Erosion, leak detection, flow assurance)
Important issues in multiphase metering
from a reservoir monitoring perspective :
Allocation Rates

Normal Situation :
 Average production rates from
test sep.
 Dynamic value from down hole
Time
or well head.
WHP

“Dream” Situation :
Require on-line data from a MPM to
improve the understanding of the
Time reservoir.
Dynnmic values from MPM

Improve reservoir understanding

and economy for the field!
