Assignment 2: Mini CFD Project - 50%

Part 1: Problem Definition (13 Marks)

Many engineering applications require the use of CFD simulations to design and optimise
systems. In this first part of the project, YOUR TASKS are to:

1. Choose an appropriate engineering application on which to carry out CFD simula-

tions. This step will be approved by the unit coordinator before moving forward.
The latest date for approval is set Week 5, on Friday 3rd April 2020. (3 Marks)

2. Define the objectives of the CFD study. Why do you want to do some CFD simula-
tions for this particular application? What do you wish to obtain from the results?
(2 Marks)

3. Simplifications are usually required in order to establish a preliminary CFD case.

Based on your chosen application, you will justify appropriate assumptions that will
be used to develop your CFD model. (5 Marks)

4. All CFD models require boundary conditions and initial conditions. Based on your
application, you will establish the appropriate boundary and initial conditions.
(3 Marks)

Part 2: CFD Model (33 Marks)

Once the problem has been defined and all the assumptions made, the CFD process can
start. In this part of the assignment, YOUR TASKS are to:

1. Create the geometry of your application. (4 Marks)

2. Set-up the CFD model in ANSYS (either Fluent or CFX) using the assumptions
and conditions established in Part 1. (4 Marks)

3. Create an appropriate mesh and carry out a mesh refinement study. (5 Marks)

4. Demonstrate iterative convergence is reached. (3 Marks)

5. Run parametric studies and/or optimisation to meet the objectives of your project
as stated in Part 1 question 2. (6 Marks)

1
6. Discuss the results obtained from this study. (6 Marks)

7. Conclude your report on your findings, limitations of the developed model and
perspectives. (5 Marks)

Part 3: Reporting (4 Marks)

As part of this assignment, you are also required to report Parts 1 & 2 at an acceptable
level of quality: overall presentation structure and language. An engineering report in a
professional context is expected, including an introduction defining the problem, justifi-
cation of the assumptions made, the method, results and discussion, and a conclusion.

Submission Process and Requirements

This is an individual assignment.
Your report must be submitted through SAFE ASSIGN and include the tasks of both
parts.
Deadline: Sunday 31st May 2020, 11:59pm (Week 13)
