1. What do you think is the significance and effect of telling the story in the present tense?

Because the present tense is often associated with short stories, thus the writer wanted
the story’s action and events more immediate. It allows the readers to convey a
character’s change as it happens.

2. What is the consistent tone of the story, and how does it reflect Miguel’s attitude towards
his experience?

The consistent tone used in the story was aggressive, Miguel was consitently felt like
Sherwin’s competing with him. He even decided to give up on picking passengers and
making money just to compete with Sherwin.

3. What are the basic street life scenes Miguel reveals as he goes about his day? Summarize
the scenes in three to five sentences.

The road was dusty that he even wore a Ray-Ban to protect his eyes. There were also a lot
of known faces on the streets. There are passengers who waits for a tricycle to give them a
lift.

4. What do these scenes imply about the setting of the story

It implies that when you live in a province, there would be different barangays
everywhere and also familiar faces would be expected. Life in province is a close-knit
community, you would find it amusing and heartwarming that people in province know
each other by name.

5. How well does Miguel know his vocation of driving a tricycle?

Miguel has been driving tricycle for years and it’s his bread and butter to support his
family. He also knew well the unwritten rule among tricycle drivers which is to respect the
one who arrives first at a place, he must be allowed to be first on the road back, a
principle obeyed in practice and recognized by all drivers.

7. Though indirectly, Miguel compares himself with Sherwin. How does he feel about and react
to their differences? Cite portions of the text that show his attitude towards Sherwin.

Miguel feels like Sherwin is one of his competitors since Sherwin drives faster and younger
than him. He always felt like Sherwin was competing with him, he even said that “This is
Miguel who’s lived long enough in this world, a man of experience, a man who knows a
lot, all through his own efforts, even if he’s a dropout.”

8. We can see that Miguel constantly talks to himself during the encounter about the
senselessness of racing against Sherwin. What are the factors that compel Miguel to try to
race?

One of the factors is that he thought Sherwin was competing with him and his pride took
over him that he didn’t want people to laugh at him and call him a loser.

9. How did the tragic experience change him?

The last part of the text where he said “Never again!” because Miguel’s words stated that
he won’t let his pride take over his mind and feelings ever again. The accident was the eye
opener for him to see that pride won’t do anything good.

It means that he failed to see what matter’s the most and that is to be humble all the time
and that pride won’t do anything good. . It gives a lot of lesson that we should apply in our
life because whatever we want we should not forget other people because in the story,
they’re tricycle drivers so they should drive carefully and safely to their passenger’s
destination or else it will cause a lot of trouble. The author tells us to think first before
doing such things.
