SEMESTER 6 : EMB 3323 PRODUCT AND SYSTEM DESIGN

INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATES:

2. This question paper consists of TWO (2) Questions. Answer ALL Questions. Total marks
are 50 which equivalents to 15% in coursework.

3. Answer all question in Microsoft Word and submit in PDF file. Fill up your details and
include the cover pages attached.

4. This is an open-book, ‘open-web’ based assessment. You are advised to refer to the
classroom materials while answering the question.

5. The duration for this assessment is 12 hours starting on 4 May 2020 from 9.00 AM until
9.00 PM. You are advised to use the time wisely.

6. No exam submission will be accepted after 9.00 PM of 4 May 2020.

Question 1 (15 Marks)

Winamp is a media player developed by Justin Frankel and Dmitry Boldyrev by their company
named Nullsoft which later sold to AOL in 1999 and last for about 15 years before acquired by
Radionomy in 2014. Every product goes through a process cycle from introductio n to decline or
retire. By conducting a case study on Winamp stages of development,

1. Determine the Life Cycle of Winamp media. (7 Marks)

2. Discuss each stages of product development player with the help of figures and examples.
(8 Marks)

Question 2 (35 Marks)

A product design team is designing an improved power-tool hand grinder for industrial usage with
durable and high torque power motor. The team has decided that they would like to dec rease the
customer intervention rate by producing the robust design of the power -tool hand grinder. The
hand grinder needs to pass below 10 seconds to cut a 3 cm width and 0.3 cm thickness of a steel
bar. To achieve this, the team has set a target that powers of the grinder motor must achieve at
least 800 watts. The customer requirements and its weights are listed in Table 1 below.

1. Define the engineering characteristics of the power -tool hand grinder including the
improvement direction. (9 Marks)
2. Prepare a Pareto analysis. Discuss. (10 Marks)
3. Prepare a ‘House of Quality’ for the power-tool hand grinder utilizing all rooms. Discuss.
(10 Marks)
4. Explain how the quality function can be benefit the company, particularly the design team.
(6 Marks)
