SDH Fast-Ethernet link standalone test report

Test scope:

The test covers the Fastethernet link between HMD and HBNS over the SDH
system which supposed to be near to 100MB of bandwidth. It consists to
check the connectivity between to endpoints (computers) using ICMP request
and to simulate FTP upload and download from one endpoint to the other.

Equipments used:

2 computers were used to run this test. Both computers were connected to
the SDH system on FasteEthernet port number 8 having near to 100MB of
bandwidth.

Computers specifications:

Two laptops: Panasonic TOUGHBOOK, windows XP SP3, Core 2 Duo 1.60 GHZ,
2GO Memory, 80GO.

HMD IP address: 192.168.200.1/24

HBNS IP address: 192.168.200.2/24

1- Connectivity test:

To check the connectivity, ICMP request were sent from HMD station to HBNS
station using Colasoft ping tool which give us information about the following
attributes:

1. Sites
2. Packet sent
3. Packet received
4. Packet lost
5. Min response time
6. Max response time
7. Average response time

The results of this test are as follow:

1. Sites:192.168.200.2
2. Packet sent:1025
3. Packet received: 1025
4. Packet lost: 0 (0%)

5. Min response time:4ms

6. Max response time:7ms
7. Average response time:5ms

The connectivity looks good; the response time is acceptable (5 ms)

and no packet lost was noticed.

2- File transfer test:

To simulate the file transfer, an FTP server was setup on the HBNS station
and from HMD I start uploading and downloading files to this ftp site.

I used native windows FTP access using internet explorer and core ftp
client software for uploading and downloading files.

2-1- FTP uploads using core ftp client:

File downloaded: SolarWinds-Toolset-v9-Engineer-Eval.zip

File Size: 128MB
Rate: 75KO

During this upload I start ICMP request from HMD to HBNS using Colasoft ping
tool and the result is as follow:

File transfer rate is too low comparing it to the link bandwidth (96MB), the
response time was acceptable (4ms) which means that the link was not

saturated during the transfer, too much packet lost were noticed (5% loss)
which is intolerable.

2-2- FTP transfer using windows internet explorer:

This test is done using copy and paste from HMD station to HBNS ftp site
and From HBNS FTP site to HMD station, many files with different sizes
were tested as an example:

File type: PDF file

File size: 200MB
Time transfer: 5 min
Transfer way: from and to FTP site.

During the file download and upload I start ICMP request from HMD to
HBNS using Colasoft ping tool and the results are the same as before, low
response time , rate transfer too low and packet lost too high.

3-Test Conclusion:

The test results are not suitable, the SDH system need to be tuned to
solve these issues.
