Specif ications
The lighting control console shall conform
strictly to requirements of this specification
wjthout deviation. The lighting control con-
sole indicated and called for herein is known
as MULTI-Q as manufactured by STRAND
CENTURY lNC., 5432 W., 102nd. Street, Los
Angeles, CA 90045, and 20 Bushes Lane,
Elmwood Park, New Jersey, 07407.
This memory lighting control system shall be
designed to record, modify, and play back
lighting sequences quickly and easily. The sys-
tem shall include, but not be limited to, a con-
troller per channel, two timed crossfaders and
one splitfader, a CRT display for viewing all
channels simultaneously, a disc unit for library
storage, and a 16-preset back-up memory
system for emergency situations. There shall
be a total of channels of control and
presets of memory.
The system shall be based on a general
purpose microprocessor. Memory shall be
-retained
in a MOS device with power-fail pro-
tection. The lighting control program shall be
stored in a non-volatile "read-only-memory':
All system controls, electronics, and power
supplies shall be in modular form and housed
in a single metal-f ramed walnut veneer control
console with padded arm rest. All modules
shall be plug-in and readily accessible from
the f ront of the console with the removal of no
more than four screws.
Control surfaces shall be black anodised
aluminum with identification in white. Non-
working surfaces shall be textured black
f inish. The console shall be factory wired with
receptacles for the 25' (7.6m) dimmer con-

trol cables and the 12' (3.7 m) A.C. power cable.
These cables shall be provrded with mating
plugs on one end and shall be color coded tor
installation on the other. The console shall be
provided with a sturdy vinyl protective cover.
Standard Features
The system shall have the following basic
capab ilities:
1. All lighting levels f or a given preset can be
recorded simultaneously, from the manual
controllers, from any channel selected on
the keyboard or any preset on any playback,
on stage.
2. lndividual levels may be set digitally by
means of a calculator keyboard. lndividual
levels can be previewed and adjusted at any
time without the need to ' match" the current
stage intensity.
3. The fade-in time for a preset can be
recorded, previewed, or adjusted at any time.
A fade time may be increased or decreased
during a crossfade without affecting the
memorized value
4. The sequential order of presets can be
altered allowing the operator to insert or
delete any number of cues after or during a
recording session.
5. A split handle crossfader and two timed or
manual crossfaders shall be available for
memory playback, which may be operated
simultaneously, in either auto-sequence or
random access mode. A grand master shall
be provided.
6. The individual manual controllers shall be
of the slider type and shall be mounted on

N/EM/lND to enable the channel output to be
played onto the stage through the memory
system or to be in direct independent manual
co ntro |.
7. All lighting levels for a selected preset or
on stage may be viewed simultaneously by
means of a CRT.
Stage display shall be dynamic and shall
include assignment of cues to faders.
8. The disc unit shall store the entire contents
of the memory on a non-volatile disc. The disc
unit shall serve as library storage of memory
only and shall not be an integral operating part
of the memory system. l\,4emory-to-disc or
disc-to-memory recording shall not take
longer than 5 seconds. lvlemory systems
employrng drsc units as the primary memory
device shall not be acceptable.
9. All intensity recording and playback resolu-
tjon shall be 256 steps.
10. A back-up module shall contain a totally
independent power supply, memory, record/
lock switch, crossfader, and 16-scene preset
select switches. lt shall be possible to record
directly f rom the main memory system, or
record blind" via the manual controllers.
The record function shall be usable even while
the back-up memory system is in operation
and therelore shall function as a totally pro-
grammable separate l6-preset system.
11. All modules, plug-in cards, power
supplies, and peripherals shall be accessible
from the front of the console.
'12. Voltage shall be regulated to within
I 0.1 70 for incoming line voltages between 105
VAC RMS and 125 VAC RMS.
