NOTIFIER
SPECIALITY
DETECTION
SOLUTIONS
Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology.
ONYX® Intelligent Sensing

 NOTIFIER is a leading manufacturer of fire alarm control panels

and provider of intelligent addressable detectors
 50 plus years of industry experience
 Over 20 years of experience with intelligent detection
 Our experience led to the development of ONYX Intelligent
Sensing
 ONYX Intelligent Sensing is comprised of two key elements
 A set of complex software algorithms enabling rapid response to
incipient fire signatures, and at the same time reduce the
occurrence of nuisance alarms
 A suite of advanced specialty detectors allowing system
designers to provide life safety protection in standard and
challenging environments

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 36

ONYX Intelligent Sensing

 Programmed into every NOTIFIER ONYX Series Panel

 Unique panel intelligence that the competitors do not offer

 Will work with standard photo and thermal detectors

 Specialty Sensors for Advanced Detection

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 37

ONYX Intelligent Sensing

 Technologies
 Detector Sensitivity Adjust
 Maintenance Warnings
 Self-optimizing Pre-alarm
 Cooperative Detection

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 38

Detector Sensitivity Adjust

 Ability to program each and every detector’s settings, choosing

from nine sensitivity levels.
 Nine sensitivity settings.
 Provides options for controlling sensitivity levels to meet various
environmental conditions.
 Prevents “false alarms” created by background noise.
 Can be programmed manually or can alternate automatically between
daytime and night-time settings.
 Nine distinct pre-alarm levels, based on pre-determined levels of
alarm.

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 39

5 - (Residential)
4 - (Office)
CLEAN 3 - (Theater)
2 - (Schools)
1 - (Hospital) Alarm Too Slowly

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 40

Weekly Occupancy Schedule

 Permits detector sensitivity change by time of day

 Enhances ability to avoid nuisance alarms based on occupancy
 Decrease sensitivity during occupancy, when ambient environment has more
particulates in the air
 Provides ability to increase sensitivity when building is not occupied
 Increase sensitivity during no or low occupancy, when ambient environment
has less particulates in the air

Maintenance Warnings

 NOTIFIER software determines when the drift compensation for a

detector reaches an unacceptable level that can compromise
detector performance
 When the detector reaches an unacceptable level, the control panel
indicates one of three maintenance warning levels
 Low Threshold
 Maintenance Required
 Maintenance Urgent
 System Maintenance
 View the amount of drift compensation per detector via the
keypad or VeriFire Tools Detector Maintenance report, schedule
detector cleaning based on drift compensation readings

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 43

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 44

Self-Optimizing Pre-Alarm

 A unique mode where the detector ‘learns’ its normal

environment by measuring peak analog readings over a
period of time
 ONYX panel intelligence sets the Pre-Alarm levels just above
these normal peaks.
 Extremely sensitive pre-alarm capability with protection
against nuisance alarms
 Reduce false pre-alarms due to spikes

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 45

Cooperative Sensing

 Exclusively from NOTIFIER

 Combination of up to three sensors in reaching the alarm decision.
 Fire alarm control panel looks at the values from adjacent devices
rather than input from only one device.

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 46

Cooperative Sensing

 There are three generally accepted fire signatures; heat, smoke and
light.
 Only NOTIFIER looks at a fourth signature: uniform smoke spread.
 Adds “distance” to the equation.
 Smoke acts like a gas and will evenly disperse.
 Increased response to uniformly distributed smoke.
 Sampling over a wider area is more stable.
 Reject isolated sources of false signals.

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 47

Cooperative Multi Sensing
 Uses any three sequential addresses
 Each address can vote in two groups
 Mix technologies, Photo, Ion and Heat can vote together
 Add squares of alarm value to obtain Multi-Sensor Value
 Three Sensors @ 58% = alarm

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 48

Cooperative Multi Sensing
 The logic is similar to multi-sensor logic,
however, using one of the traditional signatures
plus ‘Uniform Smoke Spread’ to make the alarm
decision
 The combined values are used to:
Respond faster to uniformly distributed smoke
Be less responsive to isolated puffs of smoke
 A major advantage of Cooperative Multi-Sensor
Logic over multi-sensors is distance

detection at night for a
yearly schedule.

This allows for

minimum false alarms
and maximum detection
with efficient use of
detection technology

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 87

Outdoor Smoke Detection
Video Smoke Detection,
resolves many of the detection
problems that have previously
perplexed the fire safety
industry. FireVu “sees” the
source of smoke and/or flames,
identifying them anywhere
within its field of view, therefore
it can detect at any height or
direction of flow. This “at source
detection” is faster than other
forms of detection as it is not
waiting for the smoke to reach
the detector.
Any standard CCTV camera
can work with the system.

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 88

Outdoor Smoke Detection
An operator can use a
standard PC (with our
viewing software loaded)
to view individual or
multiple camera images in
real time. When an event
occurs, a live image
showing clear boundaries
of the alarm area is
displayed to the operator
with the option to view
pre-event recorded
footage, invaluable in
reacting to the incident in
the quickest and safest
way.

Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 89

Interface to Other Systems
Multi IO Modules provide a cost-
effective, easy-mounting - simple
installation & programming and size
allocation for interfacing.

Flexibility in programming allows fully

customized user-programmable alarm
definitions per input or output other than
the standard alarm, trouble and
supervisory Signals

Modules Available are 10-input modules,

6-relay modules and 6-power output
modules
Leaders in Life. Safety. Technology. 90
Interface to Other Systems
This almost human-sized
interface cabinet that includes
around 350 standard single-
input or output modules can be
sized down to a much smaller
sized unit by introducing the new
multi-modules, thus saving
space and providing ease of
identification of inputs and or
outputs that require
maintenance.
