Seminar Report

• Hosting Institution: Facebook Live

• Seminar Date and Venue: March 23, 25 & 27, 2020

➢ Seminar Title: Solidworks 3-Day Workshop

• Objectives of the Seminar:

➢ To have basic knowledge about 3D Part Design and Assembly.

➢ To have basic introduction about sheet metal design and forming

tools.

➢ To have knowledge about hinge part design and simulation.

• The Speaker: Cadcentric Solutions Inc.

• The Seminar:

As a definition, Solidworks is an easy to use parametric design

modular, meaning you can easily edit the design at any stage in the design

process. RealView graphics allow you to visualize your design in real time

whilst PhotoView 360 can create sophisticated photo realistic renderings

and animations. Both tools will give you a fantastic insight into the way your

design will look without it being made and can be a powerful asset when

presenting your work to customers.

Solidworks is a very productive 3D CAD software tool, with its

integrated analytical tools and design automation to help stimulate physical

behavior such as kinematics, dynamics, stress, deflection, vibration,

temperatures or fluid flow to suit all types of design. It is a solid modeler and
utilizes a parametric feature-based approach which was initially developed

by PTC to create models and assemblies. The software is written on

Parasolid-kernel.

From the videos presented, there are three parts for the online

workshop by the Cadcentric Solutions Inc. for Solidworks. On the first part

it talked about 3D Part Design and Assembly where commands like

constrain, circular pattern and extrude similar to SketchUp and CAD. The

second part consists primarily of sheet metal design and forming tools

wherein the speaker used and explained more commands such as sketch

bend, sheet metal gusset, edge sheet metal and hem. Lastly on the third

part, the speaker talked about hinge part design and simulation. He used

commands such as trim, extrude and chamfer which is already familiar to

me because it is same with CAD commands.

• Evaluation:

From the presentation, there are many unfamiliar commands that I

only encountered here while watching the videos. I learned about constrain

which is used to to specify the conditions that the user’s design must satisfy.

The constraints can be driven global variables or sensors for mass

properties, dimensions, and simulation data. Also, I learned about sheet

metal commands including sheet metal gusset accompanied with special

tooling which has a ridge going across the v opening. The punch is split to

the left and right of the ridge as to not be damaged while forming. The sheet

metal is bent normally across the v opening except in the area where the

ridge is. Typically, a spacer separates the ridged section from the rest of

the v die, this provides a consistent relief for the sheet metal being bent. It
is important to note that the punch needs to also be spaced apart in the

same fashion as the die, this will prevent very serious damage.

Diving in more into the presentation, the speaker talked us through

what he was drawing. I am really interested in everything he is saying

because it was all accompanied with new learnings. Solidworks really

enables virtual prototyping, assembly, simulation and finally output as

native or open format 3D models, or as drawings. It is easier to make 3D

drawings. I learned at the last part that we can play or animate; in this case

he used the hinged and animate it. It can be seen the color is changing. The

design and parameters of Solidworks is necessary as number parameters

can be associated with each other through the use of relations, which allows

them to capture design intent and design intent is how the creator of the

part wants it to respond to changes and updates.

Therefore, after the discussion I can say that I learned a lot from the

speaker from Cadcentric Solutions Inc. I really appreciate how he offered

his time and effort to give basic Solidworks tutorial to students like us. It is

important to be resourceful in these times. Amidst the Corona Virus we are

facing today, there are still sources of knowledge even on social media

platforms like Facebook. Still, though virtually the speaker briefly explained

and answered all the questions in the comment section. I can say he gave

a very educational presentation and demonstration with drawings so that

we can easily understand the program. He established a good foundation

in Solidworks for us listeners, wherein that way we can explore and make

our own drawings necessary in the electrical field especially in work. It is

great that they are still continuing tutorials until now so that many students,

professors and other people can pass time while gaining knowledge.
