Changes Around Us

In this lesson we will………

Be able to sort living and non-living things.

Understand that living things show a change.

Understand that non-living things also show a change.

Understand what is a “once –living or once alive thing”.

Understand what is “never alive ”.

Living and Non-Living things

We know that our world is made up of living and non-living things.

Can you think of 3 living things and 3 non-living things?

What do living things do?

Living things move.

Living things breathe.

Living things grow.

Living things give birth to babies.

Living things need food and water to live.

1
Do living things show a change as they grow?

Look at the pictures in column A and in column B

A B

Did you see any changes in column B?

All living things change as they grow.

A pup becomes a dog.

A bud grows into a flower.

A caterpillar grows into a butterfly.

Here are some more examples…….

1. A baby grows into an adult.

2. A chick grows into a hen.

3. A calf grows into a cow.

4. A sapling grows into a plant.

Do non - living things show a change ?

Think about the following non-living things……do they show a change?

a balloon , a candle , a rubberband , a pencil

Some non-living things show a change in their shape and

some non-living things show a change in their size.

Other changes that we see around us

1. Do you watch the moon every night? Have you noticed that it
changes its shape?

2. We also see some changes that take place in nature.

Some trees have flowers in summer while some trees lose

their leaves in winter.

Gulmohar tree in summer A tree which has lost its leaves in winter

3
Budding Scientist ……….

Let us investigate!

1. Watch mum making chapattis. As she rolls out the

dough do you see a change?

2. Ask mum to show you uncooked rice and cooked rice.

Is there a difference between the two? If yes ,what
are the differences you observed?

3. Place a few ice cubes in a plate. Leave them in a warm

place. Do they show a change?

Note down your observations when your teacher asks you to.

What did you learn from your observations?

Can you name two other non-living things that can show
a change?

4
Once Living things or Once Alive things

What are once living things?

Some non-living things were once a part of living things and are
called as once living things.

Cut flowers are once living as they were once part

of living plants.
Fruit is also once living.
Fossils are the remains of once living animals.
Dead animals or plants are also once living.
Paper and wood were once part of living things.
Leather is got from the skin of the cow.
Cotton is got from the cotton plant.

Never Alive

Some non- living things like stones or rocks, were never alive, as
they were never able to breathe, eat or grow.

5
I learnt …………………
That the world is made up of living things, non-living things
and once –living things.

That living things show a change.

That non-living things also show a change.

What is a “once –living or once alive thing”.
