What Is The Purpose Of This Task?
To become familiar with virtual field trips.

What Is A Virtual Field Trip?


When you become a teacher, you may want or need to take your students outside of the school on a field trip. While this can be quite rewarding for the students,
field trips are often very difficult and expensive to set up and execute. Here are just some of the things you will need to handle:

Permission slips
Approval from the administration
Buses/transportation
Setup with the venue/event
Volunteers
Paperwork
Funding
Etc – the list goes on and on…

One way to expose your students to people and/or events outside the school is by conducting what is known as a virtual field. Your mission is to use the Internet to
research virtual field trips, then answer the three questions below.

What Are Virtual Field Trips? Use Your Own Words – Do NOT Just Copy/Paste This Information.
A virtual fieldtrip is done on the internet. You can take your class on a trip without even leaving the
classroom. It isn’t always just information on the internet that the class reads, it can also be set up
just like a regular fieldtrip. They are organized and guided by knowledgeable people. They can even
be done in real time, meaning that there are live people over the web while you are on the virtual
fieldtrip, not just prerecorded people.

What Are Advantages Of Virtual Field Trips?


First of all, it gives kids more of a range of fieldtrips outside of their city or even their state. They can
travel thousands of miles, and even over seas without even leaving their classroom. They are able to

get a more realistic feel like they are really there where the virtual fieldtrip is centered around. It
brings the fieldtrip to life making it more intriguing for students. Another benefit is the amount of
money schools save with virtual fieldtrips. They save on travel expenses, food expenses, paying to
actually attend real fieldtrips, etc. The money they would have spent can be spent on other
important school related things. It is also safer than actually travelling to places.
What Are Disadvantages Of Virtual Field Trips?
I would have to say that a disadvantage is not really having a hands on experience. Learning is
limited. You can see and hear all about the reason behind the fieldtrip, but hands on learning is
important as well. The other senses like touch, smell, and taste are not possible unless your teacher
in your class has a way to add that in the classroom.

Task 3. Study Skills Strategies


What Is The Purpose Of This Task?
The purpose of this task is for you to learn about the many virtual field trip opportunities available to educators in most, if not all grades and subjects. There are
many different types of virtual field trips. Some are simple videos that students watch, while others can be guided and interactive through video conferencing or
other electronic systems – and everything in between. The point with this task is to have you explore what is out there.

What You Need to Do…


Using the Internet, find three virtual field trips that could relate to the grade and/or subject you may teach in the future. Answer the questions below for each field
trip. Think about what grade/subject you might teach, then go out and find three virtual field trips that might relate to your class/grade/subject. If you can’t find
something that aligns perfectly, get creative. If you don’t know what grade/subject you will teach, that is OK, it’s ok to guess at what you might teach in the future.
The main goal for this task is for you to start to see that are a lot of virtual field trip options out there.

Discoveryeducation.com is a great source for free virtual fieldtrips. You can search by subject, grade,
or theme. You click on the link and the virtual field trips available pop up.

Why Would Your Students Benefit From This Virtual Field Trip?
It is a very informational virtual fieldtrip regarding amphibians. It involves scientists from the
National Zoo in Washington DC talking with the students. It even gives you a little paragraph on
everything you will learn about in a nutshell. This one was discussing aspects of amphibians such as
habitats, different jobs working with amphibians, all about them in general, programs to help save
amphibians, etc.

You Would Use This Field Trip To Teach Something and/or How Would You Incorporate This Into A Lesson?
Different elementary grades can learn about amphibians for different reasons. If we were discussing
the lifecycle of amphibians with 1st or 2nd graders, aside from students drawing their own lifecycles,
and writing what they believe amphibians are, we could add in this virtual fieldtrip to learn more
about what amphibians are. If students are, in general learning about different classes and species,
a virtual fieldtrip about amphibians can be helpful to learn about them in a more advanced, unique
way.

means that it can be watched at any time since it is prerecorded.

Why Would Your Students Benefit From This Virtual Field Trip?
Red ribbon week is a well-known program to bring awareness of drugs, and preventing students
from experimenting with them, starting at a young age. This is a creative way to provide an activity
for students to get outsourced words of wisdom, and to learn also about the police and the drug
force including the dogs that can sniff out drugs.

How Could You Use This Virtual Field Trip To Help You Teach Your Lesson? In Other Words, Think About How
You Would Use This Field Trip To Teach Something and/or How Would You Incorporate This Into Your Lesson?
Instead of just telling the students about what red ribbon week is, this is a great addition to show
the importance of the subject of being drug free, along with the usual week of dressing up with
predetermined fun outfits to celebrate being drug free, this can be the more serious side of the
week, showing the video of the Santa Ana police department. It goes in depth to see how drug dogs
are selected and trained. It gives additional education for students that can capture their attention. I
would show this at the beginning of the week since it in depth explains how Red Ribbon week came
about. It would be a great introduction into the subject and the week in general.

For when there is Career Day, or career week, students can learn about ag careers through this full
virtual field trip. It shows the entire aspect of this type of career beginning to end.

You Would Use This Field Trip To Teach Something and/or How Would You Incorporate This Into Your Lesson?
It gives that extra insight to ag related careers. Such as how products sold from ag careers are made
and get from there to the store ready to be bought. This fieldtrip brings to light Tractor Supply Co.
as an example.They talk about every aspect of ag careers. The making of products, marketing,
different job opportunities, etc. Teachers can show different virtual fieldtrips of multiple types of
careers if they have a career week, along with students researching their own choice of careers to
present to the class, or the teacher can assign different careers to groups of students for group
presentations. This can be just one of a few virtual fieldtrips that can be done for the week. Or you
can choose one career to highlight. This website had a few related virtual fieldtrip tours to the ag
business. It is a very beneficial site.
