• Children have been significantly less affected by
COVID-19.

• Only 1 percent of New Yorkers who were hospitalized

were under 20 years old.
 COVID-Related Illness in Children

• However, DOH is investigating 102 cases of what may be

a rare COVID-related illness in children with symptoms
similar to atypical Kawasaki disease or toxic shock-like
syndrome.
• The illness has tragically taken the lives of three young
New Yorkers a 5-year-old boy, a 7-year-old boy, and an
18-year-old girl.

• 60% of the children with these symptoms

tested positive for COVID-19 and 40% tested positive for
the antibodies (14% positive for both)
• Children may have been exposed to virus weeks before
• 71% of cases resulted in ICU admission
• 19% of cases resulted in intubation
• 43% of cases remain hospitalized

 New York Leading National Effort
• On Monday, DOH sent an alert to 49 other state health
departments and Dr. Zucker did a nationwide call with all other

leading national effort on this new syndrome.

• 14 other states (California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia,
Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New
Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington), Washington,
D.C., and five European countries (Spain, France, England,
Italy, Switzerland) have reported cases as well.
 New York Leading National Effort
• DOH is hosting a statewide webinar tomorrow for all
healthcare providers to discuss symptoms, testing and
care.
• DOH is also partnering with the NY Genome Center
and Rockefeller University to conduct a genome and
RNA sequencing study to better understand COVID-
related illnesses in children and the possible genetic
basis of this syndrome.
 COVID-Related Illness in Children
While we believe this illness to be rare, seek care immediately if your child has:
Predominant Symptoms:
• Prolonged fever (more than 5 days)
• Severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, or vomiting
• Bloodshot eyes
• Skin rash
Other Symptoms:
• Change in skin color - becoming pale, patchy, and/or blue
• Difficulty feeding (infants) or is too sick to drink fluids
• Trouble breathing or is breathing very quickly
• Racing heart or chest pain
• Lethargy, irritability, or confusion
 COVID-Related Illness in Children

Parents who have been exposed to COVID-19 or have reason to

believe their children have been exposed to COVID-19 should
take heightened precautions and seek medical attention should
symptoms arise.

Hospitals have been directed by DOH to prioritize COVID-19

testing for children presenting these symptoms.
