Q1. (a) Define workability of concrete and explain how the level of
workability will affect the quality of hardened concrete? Briefly
explain the workability test that can be done on site.
(12 marks)

(b) A fifteen-storey five star hotel building is to be built near Pantai


Cenang at Langkawi Island. Select and discuss the important factors
that need to be considered to ensure the quality of concrete is achieved
and the building will last for its intended service life.
(13 marks)

Q2. (a) Explain the meaning of concrete crushing strength, characteristic


strength of concrete, and grade of concrete. Discuss with example the
methods that can be used to proportion the concrete mix.

(b) List the type of destructive and non-destructive tests of hardened


concrete. Discuss the importance of both types of test and when these
tests need to be conducted?
(13 marks)

Q3. (a) List three differences between softwood and hardwood timber.
Illustrate and discuss the necessary work need to be done to prepare
timber for structural application in construction.

(b) Identify with examples two possible applications of timber in


construction. Describe three factors that affect the strength and
durability of timber.

Q4. (a) Name three differences between brick and block. Compare the
processes involve in producing clay brick and mortar brick for
structural application.
(12 marks)

(b) State three important properties of steel. Explain the differences in


engineering properties between hot-rolled steel and cold formed steel.
With examples discuss the use of steel in construction industry.
