Subject CE 5001 Subject Structural Steel Design

Code Title
Credits 4.0 Total Lectures 55hrs Pre- CE 3001 &
GPA/NGPA GPA Hours Design 15hrs Requisites CE 3002
Aims:
This unit provides students with the skills required to develop and analyse the loads applied to
steel structural systems, and to be able to design these structures according to the relevant
design codes. The practical tasks of selection of member sizes, design of support and joint
conditions, and the integration of structural elements into the overall structure are covered.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1. describe and quantify the loading conditions to be applied in a design involving
structural steel;
2. specify sizes for tension, compression and bending structural elements;
3. design bolted and welded steel connections;
4. complete a design involving structural steel elements;
5. use software tools to assist in the steel design process; and
demonstrate the ability to research a core topic of the unit at an advanced level
appropriate for a Masters unit.

Syllabus:
1. General details about steel structures.
2. Design of axially loaded tension members.
3. Design of axially loaded compression members.
4. Design of tension members subjected to moments.
5. Design of compression members subjected to moments.
6. Deign of beams.
7. Design of steel frames.
8. Design of welded and bolted connections.
Assessment:
Continuous assessment-30%

There will be three projects on

 Design of a Roof Truss
 Design of a beam member and
 Design of a Column subjected to bi-axial bending
and
Final examination paper of 3 hours duration -70%
