e-Learning: Fundamentals

1.1 Explore the application of e-learning and technology in teaching and learning

1.1.1 Define e-learning

LEARNING OUTCOMES

After working through this information sheet you will be able to:

• Define e-learning
• Identify appropriate technologies/e-tools to use for e-learning

Definition of e-Learning

E-learning is learning supported or enhanced through the application of Information and

Communications Technology (LSDA, 2005)

ILT Information and Learning The use of information and communication

Technologies technologies to support that core activities of
educational organisations.

ICT Information and The combination of computing and

Communication communication technologies (including computer
Technologies networks and telephone systems) that connects
and enables some of today’s most exciting
systems. eg the Internet

IT Information Technology The computer infrastructure, hardware and

software used to process data and deliver
information.

ILT also encompasses leadership and management issues ie ILT =e-Learning +e-Leadership

The e-Learning Spectrum

e-Learning can cover a spectrum of activities from supported learning to blended learning and to
learning that is delivered entirely online.

Blended Learning is a delivery methodology that includes using ICT as appropriate. For example, web
pages, discussion boards, email alongside traditional teaching methods including lectures, discussions,
face-to face teaching, seminars or tutorials.

Whatever the technology, however, learning is the vital element. e-Learning is no longer simply
associated with distance or remote learning, but forms part of a conscious choice of the best and most
appropriate ways of promoting effective learning.

When designing a learning activity consideration should always be given to the ways in which e-
Learning could assist in the learning process. Using the digital learning resource below answer the
associated questions. This should help you to plan, create, deliver and support your learning using
different technologies.

e-Learning may involve the use of some, or all, of the following technologies.

• Desktop and laptop computers

• Software, including assistive software
• Interactive whiteboards or mimio boards
• Digital cameras and videos
• Mobile and wireless tools, including mobile phones and PDAs
• Electronic communication tools, including email, discussion boards, chat facilities, virtual
classroom and video conferencing
• Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs)
• Managed Learning Environments (MLEs)
• Learning activity management systems

There is a broad spectrum of activities which
constitute e-learning, from straightforward
applications which enhance classroom activities
to full distance, online and remote learning. This
model, developed for FERL (Further Education
Resources for Learning) practitioners’
programme highlights how the introduction of
e-Learning can transform the learning process
and develop more learner autonomy. The
innovative use of technology and e-learning
extends opportunities and enables learning to
take place in ways that suit the needs of
individual learners.

Transforming the learning process – click on the image above for more details:

The model starts from the ‘traditional teaching tool’ section on the left and illustrates how e-learning can
support teaching, training and learning in a formal managed learning environment. The degree of
learner autonomy increases as you move to the right, reflecting the increased dependence upon the
electronic resources needed to work effectively without face to face support.

TASKS

FIND EXAMPLES OF e-LEARNING IN YOUR ORGANISATION OR IN YOUR CURRICULUM AREA

1. Most organisations will have examples of the use of blended learning. Investigate any examples
of good practice within your own organisation.
• Try to find at least 2 examples and organise a dissemination event to share this good
practice.

2. Investigate the use of blended learning on both the Ferl and AskButler web sites
• Find a case study that is relevant to your teaching with examples demonstrating the use of
different aspects of blended learning.

3. Investigate the use of differentiated pace and differentiated programmes

• Find a case study or an example of both. Reflect on why you would use these methods of
delivery. Disseminate these examples to other colleagues in your organisation.
