There are two major problems associated with network analysis programs based upon the state-

variable method. The first is formulating the system of equations in (1) and (2) from a description
of the network. The second is solving the set of equations, once formulated properly.

The formulation problem is mainly topological in nature. The network branches must first bec
lassified into a proper tree according to the Bashkow-Branin-Bryant algorithm. Next, fundamental
circuit @-circuit) equations must be generated and, finally, terminal equations describing the
network branches must be furnished to the program. Ideally, the only topological information
furnished to the computer should be the number of nodes and interconnection of branches. The
computer program should have the facility to select the proper tree and generate the f-circuit
equations internally.

State variable (or state space) analysis represents the power system by a set of first order
differential equations, which are then solved by numerical integration. Although the inductor
current and capacitor voltage are the state variables normally chosen in textbooks, it is better to
use the inductor’s flux linkage (φ) and capacitor’s charge (Q).

Regardless of the type of numerical integration used, this variable selection reduces the
propagation of local truncation errors.

From this description, linear components in the time domain can be represented by means of the
ordinary differential equation (ODE).

The formulation based on variables in the state space is commonly the most used for the
representation of a set of ordinary differential equations (ODE), obtained from the application of
the current and voltage law of Kirchhoff, KCL and KVL, respectively (e.g. capacitor voltages and
inductor currents), to through the analysis of an electrical network
