LESSON 7 – CONTEMPORARY PAINTING

 Fine arts - creative art, especially visual art, whose products are to be
appreciated primarily or solely for their imaginative, aesthetic, or intellectual
content.
- an activity inquiring great skill or accomplishment
4 PARTS:
1.) Material - what the artwork is made of.
- physical elements of art such as PAINT, STONE, CLAY or
METAL.
2.) Medium - characteristic way of using materials for an artistic purpose.
3.) Technique - personal way of using medium or material.

4.) Craftmanship - skill of doing what can done in a medium and the ability to
do it.

PART 1: ART PRODUCTION


o Necessary skill:
- understand how art is produced to be able to appreciate artworks come
to be
o Every art-making process is dictated by the artist style
o Style has multiple meaning:
- it can mean the art produced in a particular historical period.
- It can also refer to the art of a nation or a region within a country
o “EVOLUTION OF STYLE” refers to the growth of a single artist a way of
working.

 STYLE AS TECHNICAL APPROACH:


- as with all scientific classification, it is necessart to sort artworks based
on common traits or qualities
- as such, may be discerned not only by how it looks like but also based
on the quality of the painting
- the significance of style lies in the fact that it allows the viewer to
discern the meaning behind the subject matter and purpose of the
painting.

 CONTEMPORARY PAINTING . . .
- is made in many styles at one time throughout the globe.
- for this reason, we cannot refer to style as the art produced in a particular
historical period. Neither we can refer to it as the art of NATION or REGION.

 STYLISTIC TENDENCIES  STYLISTIC CHANGES


 Stylistic tendencies - try to explain the style of a particular painters of
a nation or region
 Stylistis changes - are attributed to the creative inventions or artists
working at certain times and in specific places.

 FOUR STYLES THAT ARE BASED ON STYLISTIC TENDENCIES:

I. THE STYLE OF OBJECTIVE ACCURACY


A. The artist as Detached Observer
- a technique used by the artists where the artwork seems to have
been made by a reporter who is observing a SUBJECT or a
photography using a candid camera.
- Artist Role: to elect, arrange, present REALITY w/o presenting
his/her indentity.
B. The artist as Selective Eye
- artist must KNOW the subject as as SEE its surface characteristic
- Artist Role: to directly pill up the detail to create an impression of
the complexity of the object.
C. DEVICES FOR OBJECTIVE ACCURACY
o Color - powerful instrument to express emotions and feelings
of the artists
- it is mainly connected with the description of the
objects.
o Focus - sharpness or softness, distinctness or vagueness of form
and contour.
o Perspective - pictorial device that relates to the artist’s ability to
create an illusion of deep space within the painting.
o Correct Drawing - accuracy of size and shape relationship
- it takes mastery and serious practice to make
beautiful artwork.
o Control and Handling of Illumnation - it helps the artist to create
realistic image.
- the amount of light an object receives the
shapes of its shadow, the source of light-these the artist learns to
observe and control in the medium that he/she uses.

 PHILIPPINE CONTEMPORARY MUSIC

 Philippine Music
- music is considered to be the least tangible of the arts. It is defined as an
arrangement of sounds to create a continuous and unified composition
- music can penetrate thinking, change our mood, stimulate ideas, create
space around man or affect us in positive or negative way
- It involves creativity in putting together melody to express an experience, a
feeling idea, words, and so on.

 Contemporary Philippine Music


- Contemporary music of 2000s, is characterized by it use of new genre such
as OPM, POP, EMO, POST-HARDCORE AND POST ROCK.
- it is characterized by imrpovation, making use of instruments not normally
use in a European orchestra, such as gong and bamboo.

 Marvin Mayson (2009) - describes how technology and globalization have


affected
contemporary music.

 ELEMENTS OF MUSIC:
1. Melody - succession of consecutive notes or tones
- it carries the overall theme of music.
2. Rhythm - the placement of duration of notes and rest.
- 3 QUALITIES (TEMPO, METER, RHYTMIC PATTERNS)
3. Harmony - combination of different tones or pitches played or sung
together
- CHORD: no tes that are played or sun together at the same
time.
4. Texture - relationship of melodic and harmonic lines in music
- the thicker the texture, the more melodic lines.
5. Dynamics - degree of softness and loudness
- this may also include the way of changing from soft to loud
or vice-versa.
6. Timbre - also known as tone color.
- quality of sound produced by an instrument or by a voice.
7. Form - it described how the other elements of music organized
- music can be described if there are repeating sections or
melodies. . . .

 CONTEMPORARY FILIPINO MUSIC COMPOSERS


a) GEORGE MASANGKAY CANSECO
- a nationally acclaimed compsoder who has written songs brought
many Filipinos singers fame.
- who was a former president of the Filipino society of composer,
authors and publishing Inc. in 1973
- COMPOSITIONS: Dito ba?, Ako ay Pilipino, Pagputi ng Uwak.
b) RAYMUNDO CIPRIANO PUJANTE “RYAN” CAYABYAB
- a composer of music for full-length ballets, theater musical, choral and
orchestral pieces.

c) FRANCISCO FELICIANO
- a producer of more than 30 major artworks that include operas and
music dramas including La loba negra, Ashen Wings, Sikhay sa kabila
ng Paalam
- composer of hundreds of liturgical pieces, mass settings, hymns and
songs for worship.
- CHORAL WORKS: Pamugun and Restless (performed by Filipino choirs
in various choral festival in Europe)

 CONTEMPORARY DANCE
- performing art that involves rhythmic body movement within the given space,
choreographed based on musical beat
- an expression of idea or emtion, releasing energy, or simply taking delight in
music and the dance movement itself.
 ELEMENTS OF DANCE:
1. Body Element - this describes how the body of dancer moves, what part
of that is moving, what actions are performed, and how the body aligns and
support itself.
2. Space - this focuses on the are where the dance is performed.
-TermsL Direction, Size, Focus, Distance, level and Elevation
3. Time - terms such as accent, beat, duration, meter, rhythm and
acceleration can be used in describing the use of space in dance.
4. Energy - this describes how energy is directed through the body, and
the body releases it
- sometimes known as dynamics.
5. Relationship - this describes how the dancer relates to another dancer,
relates to an object, relates to a group of dancers, relates to the stage and to
the production elements
- in short, it involved the awareness of dancers on their
environment.

 3 BIG NAMES IN PHILIPPINE DANCE:


1. ALICE GARCIA REYES
- National Artist for Dance (Manalac, 2010)
- considered as the multi-talented dancer, choreographer, artistic
director known as “Mother of Contemporary Dance”
- first to organized a Summer Dance Workshop at the CCP with a
total of 400 students that elads her to form a CCP Dance company.

2. LISA TERESITA PACHECO MACUJA-ELIZALDE


- founder of ballet manila
- she was recognized in Europe and became a PRIMA BALLERINA of
KIROV BALLET, in St. Petesburg Russia.

3. DOUGLAS NIERRAS
- Most prominent choreographer and has more than two decades of
involvement in dance through choreography, pedagogy, and
production.
- he’s famous for Metanoia ( a 34 min. ballet set to five general parts
of latin Mass-the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei
- mostly tackles deep, spiritual themes, interpreting in a dramatic
way.

 CONTEMPORARY KIND OF DANCING


A. CPDRC Dancing Inamtes- “Ben, I’ll be There, and We’re the
World”
- Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center
- This group was inspired by Michael Jackson
at first, they dance as part of their daily dance exercise and then started
to take dancing seriously until their performances were filmed and
released through television or online.
 CONTEMPORARY DANCING STYLES:
I. Disco Dancing – 1970’s
- this dance craze was usually associated with John Travola’s style;
movie-Saturday night Fever.
- it is characterized by movement in the hip and pelvic and raising of
arms to the beat of disco music.
II. Hiphop – America
- this refers to street dance styles performed to hiphop music
- it includes-breaking, locking, and popping.
III. Hiphop – often ‘freestyle’ or improvisation
- St. Benilde’s Romancon Dance Copmpany – 1st Filipino group to
compete in the World Hip-Hop Dance Competition.
- a number of movies and television shows have stories evolving
around hip-hop, such as –The Grind Rize, Street Dance, Saigon Electric
and Step Up.

 TOP TEN DANCE CRAZE


1. NOBODY DANCE
- it was popularized by the Korean group of five girls: The Wonder
Girls, who aired this dance through MTV in 2008.
2. SPAGETTI DANCE
- it was made popular by the Sexbomb Dancers in 2003.
3. CHOCOLATE DANCE
- it was a dance craze by the Soul Control duo that became famous
through GMA-7’s reality based talent search, Starstruck.
4. PAPAYA DANCE
- it was started by Pilipinas: Game KNB? TV Host manzano 2007 who
regularly danced to the 1970’s song by Urzula Dudziak
5. SHALALALALA DANCE
- it was dance floor hit in the 1990’s through the group dreamhouse
6. OTSO-OTSO DANCE
- it was popularized by comedian Bayani Agbayani in 2003
7. ALWAYS DANCE
- it was popularized by Wowie de Guzman with his 8-man dance
group,Universal Motion Dancers (UMD) in the early 1990’s to the tune
of the song always.
8. SHAKE BODY DANCER DACE
- it was popularized by Maricel Soriano during the 1980’s, danced to
the tune of magic fire.
9. ASEREJE DANCE
- it was introduced by the Spanish pop group Las Ketchup
10. MACARENA DANCE
- it was made popular by the Spanish music duo Los del Rio.
