General Description
The programmable electronic current burden ESCB can be used in transformer test laboratories for manual,
semiautomatic and automatic tests of current instrument transformers.
The ESCB is characterised particularly by the user-friendly menu guidance by means of inserted function keys as
well as the 10.4” LCD display.

Features

- No external burden adjustment required

- The menu-guided control of the ESCB can be accomplished either by using an external PC or by
using the built-in soft-key terminal.
- The ESCB can be calibrated in the range of its specifications (e.g. IEC or ANSI) for every
transformer.
- Definitions of new standards are possible.

Resistances Ra and Rb (sense wires directly connected)

In the optimal case the sense wires are directly connected to the terminal of the secondary circuit of the device
under test (see picture above). Afterwards the total resistance has to be determined (see chapter Determination
of Resistance Ra) and entered at Ra . Rb equals zero.

Operating manual ESCB200 12

Resistances Ra and Rb (sense wires not directly connected)

If, for any reason, the sense wires can not be connected directly to the device under test (see picture above), a
part of unknown wire occurs, which can not be detected (Rb). In this case both single resistances (Ra and Rb) have
to be determined (see chapter Determination of Resistances Ra and Rb) and the values have to be entered in the
corresponding fields.

 The resistance Ra is the resistance of the detected external resistance.

 The resistance Rb is the resistance of the non-detected external resistance.

Status messages:

- If the calibration process has been cancelled, the message “calibration aborted“ appears
underneath the status bar.
- If the calibration process has been finished, the message “calibration successfully finished“ appears
underneath the status bar.

Balancing of the ESCB200
Determination of Resistance Ra
(direct connection of sense wires and device under test; Rb = 0)

Before starting the calibration, it is necessary to measure the resistance of wiring of the X-circuit including
bridge, switches and devices.
The resistance measurement must be done for the used ranges (5 A, 2 A, 1 A) according to the picture below.

1. Insert “0 Ω“ into the burden compensation Settings menu.

2. Connect the burden with the secondary circuit of a transformer and the voltmeters U1 and U2.
3. Select the “1 VA burden” from the menu.
4. Regulate the current up to the nominal current.
5. Measure the voltage U1 and U2.
6. The external resistance Ra (5 A, 2 A, 1 A) is (U1 - U2)/ IN x 1000 = … mΩ
7. Insert this value in mΩ into the burden Settings menu for Ra.
8. Insert the value 0 for Rb.

Operating manual ESCB200 17

Determination of Resistances Ra and Rb
(if sense wires and device under test are not connected directly)

Before starting the calibration, it is necessary to measure the resistance of wiring of the X-circuit including
bridge, switches and devices.
The resistance measurement must be done for the used ranges (5 A, 2 A, 1 A) according to the picture below.

1. Insert “0 Ω“ into the burden compensation Settings menu.

2. Connect the burden with the secondary circuit of a transformer and the voltmeters U1 and U2.
3. Select the “1 VA burden” from the menu.
4. Regulate the current up to the nominal current.
5. Measure the voltage U1 and U2.
6. The external resistance Ra of this current range (5 A, 2 A, 1 A) is (U1 - U2)/ IN x 1000 = … mΩ
7. Insert this value in mΩ into the burden Settings menu for Ra.
8. Measure the voltage U1 and U3.
9. The external resistance Rb (5 A, 2 A, 1 A) is (U1 - U3)/ IN x 1000 = … mΩ
10. Insert this value in mΩ into the burden Settings menu for Rb.

Operating manual ESCB200 18

Performing of a Balancing Procedure

 This procedure is only possible in mode 0 or 2. See also table on page 10.

This balancing must be done without the CT under test. The picture below shows the connection during the
balancing procedure. Before starting the balancing, the resistances of the external wiring and bridge should be
inserted to every current range.
Follow the steps as described in chapter “Menu Burden Calibration”.

Operating manual ESCB200 19

Inspection of Burden Steps

The setting of the external burden can be checked by measuring the voltage on the CT under test during
100 % current and 1 VA burden (see picture below).

Connection default operation/4-wire-operation

Actual burden = [ UKL + external resistance x I] x I

4-wire-operation
The secondary current of the CT under test (1 A, 2 A or 5 A) flows to the burden through 2 test wires. The voltage
at the secondary terminals of the CT under test is measured via sense wires directly. Additional measurement
uncertainties due to voltage drops on the current test wires can be avoided by these loss-free voltage
measurements.

Caution. For demagnetisation of transformers, for definition of knee point voltage and for high
voltage tests the sense wires have to be disconnected from the burden.

Operating manual ESCB200 20

Calibration of the Burden Measuring Ranges

For inspecting the measuring mechanism of the burden you can verify every single measuring range. A special
verify mode can be selected via interface. During the verification the burden can be controlled only via interface.
An AC source, voltage source and a suitable measuring device for alternating quantities is necessary for this
verification.

 If the ESCB is controlled via an external PC, we strongly recommend the use of a fibre-optic cable with
RS232 interface plug for communication between the ESCB and the PC.
