BRIDGE DESIGN NEW
ACCELERATED BRIDGE
CONSTRUCTION, 1ST EDITION
Many state DOTs and the Federal Highway
Administration are actively promoting
accelerated bridge construction (ABC) to
reduce traffic impacts, onsite construction
time, environmental impacts, and life cycle
costs; and to improve work zone safety,
site constructability, material quality, and
product durability, while replacing the nation’s
transportation infrastructure. With ABC,
prefabricated elements reduce or eliminate the onsite construction time
that is needed to build a similar structural component using conventional
construction methods. These guide specifications compile the growing body of
recommended design and construction specifications for prefabricated bridge
elements and systems for ABC with a focus on constructability and durability.

THE NEW AASHTO 2020 | 40TH EDITION

STANDARDS
E N TI A

NOW AVAILABLE! SS

L
AASHTO
AASHTO has released the first of three 2020 updates to its Standard Specifications for
LI
Transportation Materials and Methods of Sampling and Testing, and AASHTO Provisional Standards, BRARY
40th Edition (the “Materials Standards). These standards contain specifications, test methods, and
provisional standards commonly used in the construction of highway facilities.
In conjunction with the release of the April Update, we’re also pleased to announcement that the Materials
Standards are now available in two new formats: paperback/hardcopy, as well as in an enhanced PDF
Download format, which replaces the previous web-based platform.

April 2020 Update

The Materials Standards are updated three times per year—in April, June, and July—with updates grouped
by subject areas. This April Update includes 8 new and 18 revised standards, and revises the sections on
Hydraulic Cement and Lime; Fresh Concrete; Hardened Concrete; Pavement Measurement; Bridge and
Pavement Preservation; and Quality Assurance and Environmental.
Click here for a detailed summary of the new and revised standards in this update.

New Paperback/Hardcopy Editions

The AASHTO Materials Standards are now being made available in paperback/hardcopy
format. These hardcopy versions will be published in three volumes, corresponding with the
three annual updates. Customers who purchase the Standards in the paperback/hardcopy
format—which is available at a discounted price—will automatically receive their three volumes
soon after the release of the PDF Download versions.

New Enhanced PDF Download Format

The new PDF Download version, which replaces the previous web-based version,
provides users with many of the same digital capabilities as the web-based format, as
well as some additional features. Specifically, this new format provides users with an
upgraded printing capability that allows them to print any portion of the publication—
from a single page to the entire book—with a single click, with printed pages that appear
identical to the published paperback copy. Also, customers who purchase a 12-month
subscription to the PDF Download format automatically receive access to all updates
published during their subscription period; they may purchase single- or multi-user licenses; and they have
access to archived PDF Download copies of the Standards (2014—2019), free of charge.
