DATE: ________________ SCORE: ______________

I. Directions: Analyze the following concepts.

Write A if both statements state facts.
Write B if the first statement states fact.
Write C if the second statement states fact.
Write D if both statements are incorrect.

_______ 1. I. When a free positive charge q is accelerated by an electric field, it is given

potential energy.
II. The electrostatic or Coulomb force is conservative, which means that the work
done on q is independent of the path taken.

_______ 2. I. Electric potential V is the potential energy per unit distance r.

II. Work W done to accelerate a positive charge from rest is positive and results
from a loss in PE, or a negative ΔPE.

_______ 3. I. Voltage is not the same as energy.

II. Units of potential difference are joules per coulomb or volt (V).

_______ 4. I. ΔV is a scalar quantity and has no direction.

II. E is a vector quantity, having both magnitude and direction.

_______ 5. I. V for a point charge decreases with distance.

II. E for a point charge decreases with distance squared.

_______ 6. I. Equipotential lines are always perpendicular to electric field lines.

II. A dielectric is an equipotential surface in static situations.

_______ 7. I. A capacitor is a device that stores electric charge and electric potential
energy.
II. The amount of charge Q a capacitor can store depends on two major factors-
the voltage applied and the capacitor’s physical characteristics, such as its size.

_______ 8. I. The greater the voltage applied to any capacitor, the lesser the charge stored
in it.
II. Capacitance is the amount of charge stored per E.

_______ 9. I. For a parallel plate capacitor (PPC), capacitance should be greater for smaller
area.
II. For a parallel plate capacitor (PPC), the closer the plates are together, the
lesser the attraction of the opposite charges on them.

_______ 10. I. The small numerical value of permittivity constant is related to the large size
of the farad.
II. A parallel plate capacitor must have a large area to have a capacitance
approaching a farad.

II. Directions. Write TRUE if the statement is correct. If false, underline the word/s that
make the statement incorrect. Write the correct word/s on the blank.

____________ 11. The potential difference between two points equals the amount of
work that would be required to move a unit positive test charge between those points.
____________ 12. The electric potential energy for two-point charges q1 and q2
depends on their separation r.
____________ 13. In an electric field line, the potential for a point charge is the same
anywhere on an imaginary sphere of radius r surrounding the charge.
____________ 14. A system composed of two identical, parallel conducting plates
separated by a distance is called a parallel plate capacitor.
____________ 15. The ground reduces the electric field strength inside the capacitor,
resulting in a smaller voltage between the plates for the same charge.
____________ 16. A parallel plate capacitor must have a large area to have a
capacitance approaching a Coulomb.
____________ 17. The small numerical value of ε0 is related to the large size of the farad.
____________ 18. The Coulomb force of a parallel plate capacitor is when the
plates are separated by air or free space.

For items III - V, refer to the rubric provided at the last page.

III. Directions. Answer the following question concisely. (19-20)

What is grounding and why is it important in our household? Give one example of
grounding.

IV. Directions. Analyze and solve for what is/are being asked.
A. Will the electric field strength between two parallel conducting plates exceed the
breakdown strength for air (3.0 x106 V/m) if the plates are separated by 2.00mm and
a potential difference of 5.0 x103 V is applied? (21-25)

B. How close together can the plates be with this applied voltage? (26-30)

V. Directions. Solve the following problems with complete solution. BOX the final answer.

A. If the potential due to a point charge is 5.00 x 102 V at a distance of 15.0m, what are
the sign and magnitude of the charge? (31-35)

B. The figure below shows the electric field lines near two charges q1 and q2, the first
having a magnitude four times that of the second. Sketch the equipotential lines for
these two charges, and indicate the direction of increasing potential. (36-40)

C. The plates of a parallel-plate capacitor are 2.50 mm apart, and each carries a charge
of magnitude 80.0 nC. The plates are in vacuum. The electric field between the plates
has a magnitude of 4.00 x 106 V/m (a) What is the potential difference between the
plates? (b) What is the area of each plate? (c) What is the capacitance? (41-55)

D. Electric eels and electric fish generate large potential differences that are used to stun
enemies and prey. These potentials are produced by cells that each can generate
0.10 V. We can plausibly model such cells as charged capacitors. (a) How should
these cells be connected (in series or in parallel) to produce a total potential of more
than 0.10 V? (b) Using the connection in part (a), how many cells must be connected
together to produce the 500-V surge of the electric eel? (56-65)

E. For the system of capacitors shown below, find the equivalent capacitance (a)
between b and c, and (b) between a and c. (66-70)
