Grammar – Extending Sentences – C
Two sentences can be joined together with a conjunction (joining word) to
make a longer sentence (compound).

Use the conjunctions and but or to join the sentences.


For example, I love playing with my friends but I hate doing my homework.

1. Henry is my friend __________ he is a funny boy.

2. I love a pepperoni pizza _________ I love a ham and pineapple pizza.

3. Sam likes going swimming ____________ she hates getting wet.

We can use the conjunctions where when if because to add a subordinate clause.

We can use a conjunction to add a clause to a sentence. A clause must have a verb.

We can use the conjunctions where when if because to add subordinate clauses.

For example, I can’t go out in the garden if it rains tomorrow.

When he tripped over, he fell flat on his face.

Using Conjunctions to Express Time, Cause and Place

1. Take turns to choose a sentence to extend.


My room is a huge mess. 2. Extend it by adding a clause which explains
when, why or where.
3. Check that the clause has a verb.
4. Check your extended sentence makes sense.
