b. Diabetes is a serious disease that affects all people, regardless of age, sex, or
race. Unfortunately, diabetes is on the rise in our country’s youth due to the growing
weight problem among school-aged children. Signs and symptoms of diabetes
include being unusually thirsty, drinking large amounts of liquids without quenching
your thirst, frequent urination, fruity smelling urine, dry skin, and blurred vision. A
diagnosis is made with a simple blood test. A fasting blood sugar greater than 100
indicates diabetes. If diagnosed, it is treated with a low carbohydrate diet and often
times oral medications or insulin injections. To prevent diabetes, it is necessary to eat
a well-balanced diet low in simple carbohydrates and get plenty of exercise. It is
easier to prevent diabetes than it is to treat it once it has developed.

c. Mary and her family lead a very fun and interesting life. They live in the middle of the
woods in a tree house. It is no ordinary tree house though. The kitchen and
bathrooms are on the ground level, but the rest of the house is nestled into the
branches of a huge tree. The bottom level is connected to the rest of the house by a
ladder built into the side of the tree. They even have a deck leading from the living
area out onto the branches. It is so much fun to spend the night with her and sleep
outside on the deck way above the ground. When we were younger, we would
pretend like we were Jack and Annie from ‘The Magic Tree House’ series and
pretend like the tree house would travel through time and to different places. Now
that we are older, we hang out on the branches and talk while we listen to
music. Funny things happen at their house. It is not unusual to have birds or squirrels
hanging out on the deck with you. I always have a great time there
.

3. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:

One Christmas Eve, I was about to have dinner with my family. My dad was preparing
to say a prayer around my cousins, grandmother, aunt and my sister. The prayer was to
thank God for giving us good health and prepare us for
a good meal. But when we were done saying the prayer,
in my mind I had another prayer. My prayer was to get a
dirt bike. I wanted one because they are fun, double fast,
and they smell like my air freshener, gasoline. Though, I
love the smell of gasoline, that’s beside the point. Getting
a dirt bike was the absolute only thing on my Christmas list.
So, after I talked to God about my prayer, I started eating
dinner. For dinner, we had turkey, mashed potatoes, green
beans, fruit, and corn which my father brought yesterday.
My grandma started to ask everyone what they wanted for Christmas. My dad said, “I
just want a check for money.” Then the question went to my cousins, Lawrence and
Caroline. They were in college so they wanted money for books and food. After my
cousins the question went to my sister. You probably know how girls are. They want a
bunch of little toys that equal a bunch of fun. Lindsey wanted a baby doll, a baby
kitchen, clothes for the dolls, and many more toys. Then it was my turn to answer my
grandma’s question. I thought, I had a very tingly feeling in my stomach that she was
going to say “NO”! But, I told her that I wanted a dirt bike. Then she said, “Well, maybe
Santa will consider making one for you.” I was very happy that she actually agreed with
me. Then, on Christmas Day, I went into the family room, and all I saw was dirt bike
gear. I already had an electric dirt bike so I thought it was all for that bike. After my sister
opened all her presents, my dad told me to go put all of the wrapping paper in the
garage. That was the moment that I opened the door and saw the Honda XR 75. That
was a dirt bike from the 80’s. I touched it, felt so happy and thankful that I got a dirt bike,
but I was also very grateful to my dad for letting me get one that Christmas Day.
