EXPLANATION

Direct speech, in Indonesian called as ‘kalimat langsung’. Usually, in narrative text, direct
speech formed as the characters’ dialog. For example: “We will called this child
Issumboshi,” the old couple said.
Direct speech, dalam bahasa Indonesia disebut ‘kalimat langsung’. Biasanya didalam
narrative text direct speech itu berbentuk dialog tokoh. Contohnya: “We will called this
child Issumboshi,” the old couple said.

Meanwhile, Reporterd speech in Indonesian called as ‘kalimat tidak langsung’. It is the

opposite of direct speech, reported speech is also the characters’ dialog but in form of
explanation or indirect sentence. Look at the direct speech before and compare it to this
reported speech: The old couple called that child as Issumboshi.
Sedangkan Reported Speech, dalam bahasa Indonesia disebut sebagai ‘kalimat tidak
langsung’. Kebalikan dari direct speech, reported speech adalah dialog dari tokoh yang
disampaikan secara tidak langsung atau melalui penjelasan. Perhatikan contoh direct speech
sebelumnya dan bandingkan dengan contoh Reported speech ini: The old couple called that
child as Issumboshi.

Rumusnya seperti ini:
• The subject from direct speech, from ‘we’ has been change into ‘the old couple’ in reported
speech. That is because in reported speech, the writer would explain the dialog in the story,
so the writer would not use the first-person perspective, so in reported speech the perspective
turn into third-person perspective, in this case the third-person who are talk in the sentence is
‘The old couple.”
Subject dari direct speech yaitu ‘we’ diubah menjadi ‘the old couple’ pada reported
speech. Dikarenakan dalam reported speech, penulis ingin menjelaskan percakapan
didalam cerita, jadi tidak mungkin menggunakan sudut pandang orang pertama,
sehingga diubah menjadi sudut pandang orang ketiga yaitu tokoh yang berbicara,
dalam kalimat diatas tokohnya adalah ‘The old couple’.
• From this change into that, it is because the writer should use third-person perspective in
reported speech. So, the writer should not involve in the story, and because ‘this’ used to
refer something near the writer, it is better to use ‘that’ to refer something that is not close to
the writer because the writer is not involve in the story.
Dari this berubah menjadi that, dikarenakan sekali lagi sudut pandang penulis harus
sudut pandang orang ketiga. Jadi dimisalkan penulis tidak terlibat didalam cerita,
 maka tidak menggunakan ‘this’ sebab ‘this’ digunakan untuk hal yang ada didekat
penulis/pembicara. Maka dari itu diubat menjadi ‘that’, untuk merujuk ke hal yang
tidak ada disekitar penulis.
• Add preposition ‘as’ to make the sentence clearer.
Ditambahkan preposition ‘as’ untuk memperjelas kalimat.

Now, I will give you one more example from direct speech to reported speech:
Sekarang, saya kasi satu contoh lagi perubahan direct speech ke reported speech:
• Direct speech: Issumboshi told the grandparents, “I will go to the capital to study”.
• Reported speech: Issumboshi told the/his grandparents that he will go to the capital to study.

RS :Sadly told me “ was not a good friend for you
4. DS : My best friend Alex said, “Have a safe trip, I will miss you every day.”
RS : Alex my best friend said “can a safe to trip,he was willto miss you every day”
5. DS : “My child, I’m sorry I don’t have any gift to give in your special day.” The poor
man said.
RS :”my child,say i'm sorry i don't have any gift for your special day” the man said.
6. DS : She said to him, “I don’t like just stand by and doing nothing.”
RS :she told me “ She was don't like if stand by and do it nothing”
7. DS : My mother said, “You have to bring your umbrella, it supposed to be rain
today.”
RS :was mom asked “ i was had to bring my umbrella,if supposed to has
to be rain
8. DS : He said to me, “It took a lot of time to finish my homework.”
RS :he told me “ He took a lot of time had to finish my homework”
9. DS : All of my fans said, “Your make up and outfit is always gorgeous.”
RS : My fans asked me “ Your make up and outfit has always gorgeous”
10. DS : My brother said, “You’re the worst sister that I’ve ever had.”
RS :my brother says “that he the worst sister if i've ever day”
