BOND BETWEEN OLD AND NEW CONCRETE

Amr I.I. Helmy1 & Khalid M. M. Morsy2

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the maintenance and repair of concrete structures have become
increasingly important as these structures age and deteriorate. The performance of the
repaired concrete depends not only on the properties of the repair material, but also on
how well the new and old concrete bond and work together.

Little information is available on the durability of composite concrete specimens

made with concrete repair materials. The bond strength between the old concrete and
the repair concrete frequently determine how well the repaired concrete performs.

The objectives of this research were to study the effect of some characteristics of old
concrete such as cement content and coarse aggregate type on the bond strength
between old and new concrete. The effect of old concrete surface preparation
technique used prior to repair concrete application such as roughening, bonding coat
and shear connectors were also investigated. Splitting prism and slant shear tests were
carried out to evaluate the bond between old and new concrete.

Keywords: repair, durability, cement content, coarse aggregate type, roughening,

bonding coat, shear connectors, splitting prism, slant shear, bond.
